    I don't know why I keep watching food stamp challenges. I live in Canada and we don't even have food stamps! But I must say I'm impressed! You were an inexperienced cook and grocery shopper, but managed to pull off a well-balanced diet on a restricted budget and you didn't spend the whole time whining about it either. Looks like you picked up some good life skills!

      Lastly people like you are the slave. You want Master (the Government) to give you money. Massa gives you food stamps. Massa to help pay your rent. As long as you still live your shitty life and have no goals and stay on the welfare plantation massa will take care of you.

    • @tjk5992
      @tjk5992 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@killstreak8 Its not the governments job to take care of you. It is your job. People on welfare should get a job or make your own career. They would feel better about themselves. Alot could also benefit from losing weight being obese alot of them.
      But no. You want Daddy/Massa to take care of you. Most of you have low self esteem. Start with a part time job. Working will build back your self esteem and will make you feel better and yourself. It will give you some worth. You're better than being on welfare for the rest of your life.
      Family of 6? Who the fuck told them it was a good idea to have 4 kids they can't support? They fucked up their lives and made bad decisions so they should live with it. Those families ain't starving since most people on welfare are obese.

    Even those "just starting out" will still normally have oil and basic seasonings. As I'm sure it's been pointed out store rewards programs are free to sign up for. It's awesome that you tried this challenge. If you have a crockpot you don't actually have to soak your beans. At least not pinto beans. You just add them to the pot with water and cook them until soft. Add your seasonings at the end. I just keep it basic and do seasoning salt and a stick of butter. (Of course when I'm making it, it's for a family of 5)

    Since you posted this a couple of years ago, I don’t know if my comment will be of interest or use to you. I enjoyed your video. I am happy that you decided to take the challenge and really go through the steps. I wish more people understood what it is like to work within fairly narrow constraints not just once but over a period of months and years. I want to add a couple of ideas to it from the perspective of being on Snap for around 30 years. Maybe it would help you if I explain that my husband and I are both blind, and I was born with spina bifida. I have been receiving food stamps in its various forms since I was 18. If I were able to share tips with someone who was new to the program, this is what I would tell them. First, try to avoid the more expensive grocery stores like Kroger, Publix, and Trader Joe’s. Walmart, Aldie, and discount or dollar stores like family Dollar or Dollar General are your best friend. 😄 I lived as a vegetarian for three years, and these stores supported me back then as well as with my current diet. Timing is another thing that really matters. If you shop et the end of the day, usually once Rush hour has passed for the day, they will take things out of the section of the deli where they prepare custom orders and put it in the refrigerator case. When they do that, it becomes eligible for purchase with food stamps, and they usually drop the price by half. It can also work to shop toward the end of the day or very early in the morning to get the day-old bread that they sell on clearance. This goes for all sorts of baked goods.
    There are two additional strategies that can help people on food stamps or people fighting food insecurity in general. One is to heavily use manufacturers coupons and store coupons to lower what you pay at the cash register. Yes, that is time consuming. However, if you do it well, you can save up to 50% or more on your grocery order. The other thing I would offer is that sometimes it is better to buy a large box of something and divide it into Ziploc bags for freezing or for storage. it is often the case that you pay more for the smaller item if it’s something you buy often. Sometimes that can save you about 20 to 30% on the cost of the item.

    • @JMontage

    Cash is only given to you if you’re pregnant or have kids under 18 (in the US) Snap anyone under a certain income can get. This is a reply to someones answer that had it totally wrong. Also, please think about someone that is on a restricted diet. Most cheap foods are processed and all carbs or starches. Diabetics cant do that without facing major problems. My main takeaway is, be good to others regardless. You don’t know all they face. Its too easy to say they are freeloaders if they must rely on these benefits. Just think about your situation. How long would you be able to live the life you are now if you had a major event happen? Natural disasters, losing a job, medical crisis, maybe your car craps out totally. Please think ahead so that you can keep enough on hand so that you don’t get hit so hard. Its too easy to loose all you have in a heartbeat.

    Try living on 15 dollars a month in Snap benefits. That's less .50 cents per day. That is what the average senior citizen that lives in our Apartment complex receives. If it wasn't for food pantries I'd be starving. I eat beans for protein almost everyday. Peanut butter and jelly sandwiches are also a almost every day occurrence. I eat lunch at a senior center m-f. All because all utilities are included in my rent. Before I moved here I was getting over 5 dollars a day.

    • @tazz378
      @tazz378 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I buy food only when it's on sale or woohoo from Kroger. Use coupons to reduce my bill. I eat a pretty much vegetarian diet. The exception for me is cheese. That I purchase when it is on sale for less than 1.99 per 8 ounce brick. Last time I bought cheese it was 1.99 per 12 ounce brick. So I bought 10 blocks using cash. I freeze my cheese after purchase so I probably have 6 months of cheese. So that is a little over 3 dollars a month. Dry beans are cheap and healthy for you. Keep staples in your pantry and you can make cheap healthy meals. My favorite meal is less than 3.00 total to make and it has 6 plus servings.

    • @tazz378
      @tazz378 5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Yes it's supposed to be supplemental. But the way the law was written is discriminatory against those whose utilities are included in our rent. We are paying the utilities but do not get the standard utility allowance. If a person making the same amount of social security as me. Pays the same total as my rent in rent and utilities. They will get between 182 and 192 dollars. What is wrong with this picture.

    Living on food stamps is 1 of the hardest things in life. Arkansas has a current state minimum of $234 for a single individual on social security, yet I don't recieve that, before the pandemic I was recieving $33 per month. It took a pandemic before I got the state minimum and I fear they will take that away soon once Arkansas gets to 75 percent up to 90 percent vaccination rate. I have resorted to dumpster diving, however that is hit or miss and I also went into debt cause I chose to eat instead of pay bills when I ran out of food stamps since the food stamp office refuses to give me the state minimum. I only get $726 per month or $8712 per year, that is way below the poverty line by a lot. I don't like it how they treat each and every one of us that has to be on food stamps. Its down right SAD

In my opinion those of us getting stamps and/or other types of assistance are some of the most privilaged people in our country. If we do run out of them we can get additional help from churches, food pantries, and community meals. If you don't like being on food stamps then my best advice would be get off of food stamps.

    Why are some Americans against welfare (food/rent/income support/free or affordable healthcare)? Whenever there is a financial crisis the so called socializing of losses (so called welfare for banks and corporates) is hardly argued against, but when there are proposed increases to programs such as SNAP it is a huge struggle to pass such bills in Congress etc. This is May 2020 and as the COVID-19 pandemic is spreading and people all over the world are losing their jobs, incomes, lives etc - programs as such as SNAP are a no-brainer. Of course if people do not have proper nutrition/food, the consequences impact everyone (health system overloads, costs increase, pandemics spread easier etc etc). A smart welfare system also advantages those who do not need welfare. Welfare is like insurance - you probably will never need to use it, but it is good to know it is there; and if you do need to use it - it is then when you learn how good or bad your welfare system is.

      We went with about the average amount per day to better understand what the average person on SNAP would face, and so that our members would be having a uniform experience for discussion’s sake. A month would help us understand the situation even more and that might be something we do in the future.

      As someone on SNAP, you get a card with your amount limit on it ( kind of like a gift card) that can only be used on food. Some people get TANF which is regular money added to their card.

      I would say there’s a little more nuance in the food stamps or SNAP program than you might first think, such as access, autonomy, social pressures, etc. Some people have touched on these ideas from their experiences in the comments. But thank you for sharing your perspective as well!

    No one lives on food stamps. The program is a supplement, not an entire food budget. This video is 100% worthless.

    • @JMontage
      @JMontage  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Are you sure that no one lives on food stamps? Yes it’s meant to be supplemental, but is that really how it’s used in practice? Even if it’s not a permanent situation, I would argue it’s still beneficial to try to understand that perspective. We’ve found it’s more prevalent than I even expected
