@Gökalp Kahraman johny is a nihilst...he acts intellectually but he has no feelings to anything..he's detached to everything. To me he's basically a coward. he doesn't want any responsibility which is a basic thing in any relationship and that's why he leaves in the end..he doesn't want to commit to anything or to any relationship...he knows he's leading a miserable life but he can't help himself to get back to normal life even though he's very capable of doing so..at the end of the movie he reluctantly tries to get back to norm where he says Sophie to get rid if that fag..but it was just momentary...after all that conversation with his girlfriend he still leaves her.. one of the most complex character of all time...

what a exceedinly grim film. Thewlis is extremely dislikeable but his streams of misanthrophy mixed conspiracy theorist views makes his character unique. i particularly like his back and forth with the Scottish guy whose lost his girlfriend.
David Thewlis deserved an Oscar for this performance its one of the greatest acting ever displayed on silver screen..
Quite possibly the best film ever made. Wonderful score.
