    The wild fact that this carnival and the Witchlight carnival’s stories are intertwined is wild! Would love to see a video expanding on this story in the future!

    Seems like joining her troupe could be a way for players to infiltrate a closed-border domain

      As long as you aren't too concerned about the Twisting and don't think for a second the carnies don't know what you're up to. Well, that and Isolde wouldn't let anyone endanger Carnival as a whole. But navigating those concerns could make for great roleplaying opportunities.

    Such a great domain that I've never been able to use despite having had the original setting material for more than two decades. The novel based on it ("Carnival of Fear" by J. Robert King) is one of the better Ravenloft side novels (those outside of the Strahd/Azalin/Soth books), and puts the cycles of tragedy and despair that the Demiplane of Dread loves to use on full display.
    [SPOILERS clarifications about the novel's end]
    Note about Hermos murdering Marie not covered in the video: it was more of a tragic decision based on compassion than anything else. Hermos was a gentle giant who loved and respected Marie, and to see her be forced to become the new Puppet Master pained him so much that he killed her to save her.
    EDIT: Isolde's curse is two-fold: that she may never find her quarry, and that she may actually be causing the Twisting, which is a reality warp effect that physically changes people who spend too much time in the carnival (i.e. near Isolde), transforming them into "freaks" that end up more-or-less feeling like they belong there and can never be normal again.
    I once played a blind staff fighter in a 3E one-shot in honor of Marie, the blind knife juggler/thrower.

    I did not realize this troupe could travel to domains that closed off thier border. Strahd, I hope you are ready for a carnival. This seems like a great way for players to catch thier breath without destroying the atmosphere that you built up.

      Strahd has a bargain with the Vistani where they are granted unmolested free passage into and out of Barovia.
      Isolde also has a bargain with them, as they act as her couriers and suppliers.
      Do the math.

    Surprised you mentioned what Isolde is but not exactly how she affects the pseudo-reality of the demiplane itself. The full extent of the Twisting was one of my favorite touches, including technically innocuous manifestations like the creeplings.

  • @tomkerruish2982
    @tomkerruish2982 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Yay! More Ravenloft!
    (What follows is mostly rambling about my own head-canon.)
    I think of the Dark Powers - those responsible for the existence of the Domains of Dread - as being unfathomably alien and powerful entities investigating the nature of evil. (In game terms, something akin to the elohim of Pathfinder Bestiary 4; thematically, the Excalbians from the Star Trek TOS episode "The Savage Curtain.") Why only evil? Because there are so many different ways to be evil. It's a bit like what Tolstoy wrote: "All happy families are alike; each unhappy family is unhappy in its own way."
    Of course, the Dark Powers are purposefully left vague, so each DM can flesh them out as much or as little as they see fit. Another poster has made the intriguing suggestion that we, collectively, are the Dark Powers, having made Ravenloft for our own amusement.
    Happy gaming!

  • @panhandlersparadise1733
    @panhandlersparadise1733 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Thank you. I've been trying to plan something better than the typical Haunted House for this year's Halloween adventure and you just inspired me. I'm not sure yet, brainstorming, but something along the lines of Tristan and Isolt being held prisoners in separate carnival parade wagons has turned them into evil anti-paladins until they're back together. I'm pretty sure I can come up with all sorts of creepy weirdness as the players travel in the carnival until they figure out they have to get the potion drinkers (drinkees?) back together to end the curse.
    For everyone reading this, it might seem early but Halloween happens fast. It is August 8th as I write this comment, it's time for DM's to start thinking about what to do for Halloween... In the meantime, happy gaming to everyone, may you have some weird and creepy games!

    What if the reason Isolde isn’t trapped is because she isn’t the actual dark lord of the carnival? Sure she’s the troupe leader and thus it’s a natural assumption to assume she is the dark lord, but what if another member of the carnival is the dark lord and just allows outsiders to think Isolde is the dark lord to evade detection? Doesn’t she have an evil sentient sword? 🤔 Hmmm.

    Thank you for review but I am a little bit dissapointed - I thought this carnival would be more like place of mystery murders, source of curses or something, not the beacon of hope in the dark. Like I actually hear of it and I planned to do in my CoS campain create this tenssion - when carnaval arrives to Barovia players will have moral dilemma to side with Strahd to banished this greater evil or to doom Barovian people to even more suffering by keep it functioning. But then your video come and I realized there will be no dilemma it just shelter for poor souls. Yes it has its flaws but its more like - if something bad happens usually this means you are the master of you problems, or more like Face your dark side and (fall to it and face consequences) or overcome it.

    An obvious reminder to DMs is you can feel free to make the truth about Isolde anything you want to if you want to shake things up and/or have players who know the written lore of the Domains Of Dread. Personally I'd love to run a story in Barovia where the latest reincarnation of Tatyana decided to try & break her fate by starving Count Strahd by setting fire to the villages in Barovia & attempting to kill every other mortal in the realm. More than simply forcing Strahd into starvation what would be the effect of his torment engaging in atrocities that would make her an even worse Dark Lord?

    I had an idea to homebrew a campaign that's a mix between this and curse of Strahd. A carnival castle the teleports to new realms, enticing travelers into its walls. There, it would be a carnival with wild games/shows but most of the workers would be undead (vampires). Most of the people in the carnival have glossed over eyes, and look to be from several eras. The lord of the castle would be a mix between Strahd and the dean from Blue Exorcist- almost like a Dracula jester. I'd like to get both these books, feel like I could make a pretty dope story out of them

    I've been having weird dreams lately about fantasy 'circus' places, I reckon this video may have subconsciously inspired them. :)

    Been awhile since I've read the original supplement, but some of this sounds new.
    I'm guessing this content (and this version of The Carnival) is from the new Guide to Ravenloft?

    Didn't know Ravenloft had Rattatas.

    We definitely need more Ravenloft material. I love the setting overall. I get being in a horror setting for too long may drain your players or numb them to the effect the domain is supposed to have, but the idea / concept is so interesting.
    Also, it looks like you bought the Ravenloft compendium on DM's Guild. I am glad to see I am not the only fan of such an awesome reworked and compiled resource

    Anyone thinking of using this setting when the VRsGtR book comes or swap it out for Heckna when that setting comes out? Cuz either way they sound like good options. The later may be useful if any of my players are knowledged in FR and Ravenloft

    This domain seems surprisingly altruistic, for a dread domain. Actually, it dosn't seem evil at all, which actually makes me kind of suspicious of it. What dark secret are they hiding?
