I was stationed aboard USS NIMITZ during the filming of this movie. I got to meet Kirk Douglas and all of the other actors; I was knocked down (but not hurt) by Martin Sheen when he was jogging inside the ship (a bad idea); I even had a bit part playing the RF-8G pilot looking down on Pearl Harbor and seeing all of the battleships lined up along Ford Island. Watching the dogfight scenes (F-14s versus the Zeros) still brings tears to my eyes.
My favorite scene is during the 'Splash the Zeros' dogfight when the Toms are playing with the Zeros... The one Tom just seems to hang in the air then pushes nose over like it's dropping off the edge of a cliff...
I'd have loved to hear it! I remember how well good soundtracks sounded back in the late 90s. Music was so well written back then and to hear such orchestral pieces in full dolby 5.1 was an inmersive experience I haven't felt with modern cinema anymore.
When the Intrepid Air and Space Museum first opened they had a Navy flight ops film made from all the extra footage using this music, constantly playing on the hanger deck.
Saw this film in the theaters on my 12th Birthday. I joined the Navy 5 years later and was assigned to VA 35 (A6 Intruders), aboard the Nimitz. Loved serving aboard such an iconic ship. When I hear this music I swell with pride.
This movie is one of those diamonds in the rough that so often gets overlooked, and only known about if you had prior knowledge of it. For what it is, it's one one of my personal favorite films, and still stands the test of time. If they were to do a remake of this film, it would only disgrace the original. You can't repeat a unique film like this.
Greatly underrated, highly entertaining, well produced movie - the complete package. This is another rare instance when the right music/composer showed up and was used.
This movie has been in the box office sellout for quite sometime in 1980 worldwide. The storm in the movie acted just 'right' for the Japanese lost all their aircraft carriers at Midway !
I liked it but was terribly disappointed with the ending, because the moral question of whether they should interfere with history was never resolved. The storm came by in the nick of time and saved them from having to make a decision. That seemed such a cheat to me!
Honestly, it was a campy movie, but, the thoughts it invoked were pretty powerful. The part where the capture Japanese pilot was told of all of Japan's secret plans, ships, times, codewords, etc, and he was stunned, momentarily in shock really. Heck wouldn't any of us be?
Mushdogful- I respectfully disagree with you on the moral question: Kirk Douglas's character made the decision to have the Nimitz launch a strike, regardless of the consequences on the 'space-time continuum.' He deemed it the duty of the Nimitz, as a US man o' war to defend the nation.
Yep. That part takes me right back to 1983, sitting on the shag carpet of my mom and dad‘s living room floor. Cannot tell you how many times I watched and re-watched that movie growing up.
Still a piece that makes you site up straight, smile and feel proud. A very under-rated film with an outstanding orchestration. I'd have Laurel and Owen playing at my funeral - a stunningly emotive composition.
This is a super under-rated film. It was very original, had a good story, good actors and the giant set piece, a 100,000 ton active duty US Aircraft carrier. The score was fantastic. I suggest you go and check this out ASAP.
"The Final Countdown" has, when you think about it a pretty 'curious' story line, but it sells it well and makes it an exciting adventure, with help of the great Kirk Douglas and Martin Sheen and under direction of Don Taylor. John Scott provides a magnificent score with a very catchy main theme. Enjoy!
" Pretty curious " , yes in the scence of THE TWILIGHT ZONE. I liked the movie but the cuts in it where to hectic. The book to the movie based on an earlier draft had also been better, less caotic and easier to follow.
@Badger070 Same here. Remember? "Russian trawler!" "What's he doing?" "Not much fishing!" And then you see her. U.S.S. Nimitz. CVN-68. 1,092 feet long. 100,000 tons. Two nuclear reactors. Speed "greater than 32 knots" (classified). 90 aircraft. Sea Sparrow, Phalanx, and other defensive weapon systems. Crew complement, 3,532 plus 2,480 air wing. Good movie; great score. The music really elevated the whole experience. Very majestic. Surprised the US Navy hasn't adapted it in some way to play (Navy bands) at parades, concerts, Army-Navy game, etc.
It would be great for the aircraft carriers to play it out at sea when the planes take off and also during unresponsive & ver trees at sea. I’m a Navy veteran.
Great musical score. As an old Army bandsman, I even liked Scott's arrangement of the Navy Song (Anchors ⚓ Away). The movie was a far better rendition of modern Naval Aviation than the one with Tom Cruise in it...

Best Theme Music Ever on The Final Countdown for the Aircraft Carrier USS Nimitz going back in time to the day bomb Pearl Harbor attack on December 6,1941.
This could be a great movie remade except we need a huge battle at the end before the storm reappears. Then as soon as the 40's US forces try to follow the Nimitz through it closes behind them. :)
Great movie, great soundtrack. Much of the soundtrack seems like it would be extensible to remixes and the like. Is anyone aware of such works? Every time I search on "Final Countdown" and and variation of "Mix", I end up with the Europe song.
Can one just imagine that the USS Nimitz had enough fire power to completely destroy the entire Japanese air attack and sunk the entire Japanese fleet! What would the world look like had that occurred? Interesting thought !
I don’t know if I’m the only one but I remember seeing a few trailers for this on tv and two of them showed the -Cats and A-7’s actually attacking the Zeros, Kates, and Vals over Pearl. Either, I’m dreaming or that was a floor cutting moment...
The opening theme in this video is not the same performance as in the movie. It sounds completely different. See the video named "The Final Countdown(1980) - MainTitle(Theme Music)" for the actual original performance. Albums released as original soundtracks but containing different versions of the actual music in the movie are a pet peeve of mine. It happened to the "soundtracks" for Star Wars and many other movies.
I would love to find the sheet music. I am the music director of a Philharmonic Orchestra in the US but have not been able to locate the music. It should be performed and would be if we could purchase or rent it.

Straordinaria e stratosferica colonna sonora per un film altamente spettacolare del 1980 con attori famosi ( a proposito auguri KIRK per i tuoi 103 anni ). At 07:29 "Laurel And Owen" is beautiful.
