Few stories break the heart more than what happened to those aboard the USA Steamer General Lyon. Many burned to death or drowned in the churning waters of the Atlantic during a storm after the ship caught fire. A barrel of kerosene broke open below deck as the rough seas tossed the ship. Two hundred and five of those who died were members of the 56th Illinois Infantry. They fought in the Civil War, surviving major and minor battles, enduring hardship beyond belief only to perish at sea on their way home.

The story of what happened to those veterans inspired P. Michael Jones, Executive Director and Founder of General John A. Logan Museum in Murphysboro, Illinois, to create a memorial.
The labyrinth honors the veterans with their names engraved in stone. Visitors may pace along the path that leads to the display while contemplating the loss of so many lives.

Very Interesting video. Thank you. My 3X great grandmother's brother, John Harrawood of Hamilton County IL of the 56th IL Inf died aboard the General Lyons. It's important to remember these soldiers.

This is the first I'm hearing about this tragedy. I'm glad the boys finally got a memorial.

Your comment underscores why the Logan Museum created the memorial in the first place. Thank you.
