Carol Crisp’s passion-or obsession-is locating abandoned cemeteries in Pope County, Illinois, land that is now part of the Shawnee National Forest. Over the last decade, she’s found hundreds of forgotten burial sites (343 cemeteries as of 8/2024) dating from the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. During those decades, a forty-acre plot of land could support a family. Practically every available piece of land served that purpose. It worked for a while, but starting in the 1890s, those family farms began to fail.
WHY THE FARMS FAILED
A thin layer of topsoil covers the bedrock in the hills above the floodplain in Pope County. Repeated plowing resulted in the loss of soil nutrients, which often led to erosion. Then farm prices fell below the cost of production. Even if a farm could avoid overfarming and lower prices, it could not survive the Great Depression. Many families had no choice but to leave. They left behind their land and their family burial plots.
CREATION OF THE SHAWNEE NATIONAL FOREST
In response to the abandonment of thousands of acres, the federal government created the Shawnee National Forest and acquired those parcels.
Carol searches the Shawnee National Forest for lost burial sites. Landowners recommend places to search, and deer hunters are another great source of information on abandoned burial sites.

      That's a good point. I will say viewpoints regarding tick bites were slightly different in 2003 when this was produced. While tick-borne illness existed, most paid little attention to it like they do today. Nowadays, I avoid the woods or open fields during warm weather.

    They usually don't find much where early military camps were built. The buildings would either be taken over by squatters or dismantled by local residents for building materials. They would go thru the trash heaps to remove recyclable material (metal, glass, buttons, buckles).

    I don't have a clue what would lead six idiots to give this a thumbs down, but they do have to be idiots. This is fascinating. I want to learn more about this cantonment. Finding this video reminded me of the early 70s, when there were at least two years they had at the Mississippi Palisades State Park something called General Grant's Civil War Cantonment. I went to one of them, I think it was the second time they did it...and I can't find any evidence it continued after the second one. They had some fun competitions for children...and I won the egg in spoon race. During the same general time period, we also visited Cave in Rock and a bunch of other parts of Illinois...which brings me to ask--how close is it to Cave in Rock?

    • @Richkuenneke
      @Richkuenneke 3 วันที่ผ่านมา

      Hello, The EudaemonicPlague: The cantonment site is in Pulaski County, Illinois, probably 15 miles upstream from the Mississippi and Ohio River Confluence. Based on a rough calculation, Cave-in-Rock is 140+ miles upstream from the cantonment site (80+ miles by car). Many thanks for your kind words. I'm preparing a new video with Mark Wagner about his excavation of an early 1800s sunken flatboat on the Ohio River near America, Illinois, back in the early 2000s. Stay tuned.

    Some of my Bollinger ancestors crossed into Missouri on New Year's Day 1800 at Ste. Genevieve and settled in the Whitewater area of what is now Bollinger County. The Mississippi River was frozen over and they cautiously crossed over the ice at Ste. Genevieve, Mo.

    the big takeaway kind of got skipped over but it bears repeating. Military leaders lying to the President is as old as the nation. It did not start in Korea, or Viet Nam, or Syria. It started at the beginning. This key fault in our system is worrying in an age when weapons can strike anywhere on earth from anywhere.

    I visited Vicksburg, Mississippi during their Tricentennial celebration. They have the "VICKSBURG NATIONAL MEMORIAL PARK" in which they have the "USS CAIRO MUSEUM". They have a civil war battleship built in CAIRO, IL. It was there that they explained that the correct pronunciation of CAIRO is actually "CARE - OH". It seems that "CARE-OH" built war ships for the Union Army during the Civil War. It was quite interesting. Anyone from "CARE - OH" should visit the museum given the opportunity.

      Thank you for the comment. Mound City is where they built three ironclad gunboats during the Civil War - USS Mound City, USS Cincinnati, and the USS Cairo, which is now on display in Vicksburg as you mentioned. Four other gunboats were built at Carondelet, Missouri. The seven gunboats served as the vanguard of the Mississippi River Squadron - a brown water navy consisting of 80 boats. The Mound City Naval Depot served as the repair facility for the squadron throughout the war.

    It's funny that they would make anything for Wilkinson, because as history has proven that even though he was in command of the U.S. Army he was also Spanish Agent 13 who was in cahoots with Spain in their efforts to keep the United States from expanding West of the Mississippi, he was also complicit in Aaron Burrs plans to split the area West of the Alleghenys into a separate country in one of his more perfidous acts, he sold out the Lewis and Clark expedition to the Spanish, who dispatched troops, to capture and kill them, as invaders, but said troops failed being unable to find them.
