This story automatically took me to the movie of the Passion! For years, I was taught how my amazing Lord sacrificed himself for me! But when I saw this movie, I totally cried as if I couldnt stop! The suffering, pain and mockery was now at the forefront and I visually saw this entire moment in time that I shall never forget! Thank you Jesus!
What sticks out to me is that Joseph of Arimathea would defile himself with a dead body, making himself unclean, taking Jesus' body down off the cross and wrapping his body in linen. He would not have been allowed back into the temple for days and only after a ritual cleaning. At first I thought it stiking that he would achieve an audience with Pilot to even get permission, but the Bible does say that he was part of the Sanhedrin council and that he had opposed the decision. It is possible that this act may have cost him respect and social standing with the council also. I think a few words in Luke's gospel do not tell the depth of the sacrifice of this one follower. When we piece together the hints of the whole Bible to show how Jo of A would have made to do what he did to honor Jesus it feels more impressive to me.
