I know this might be unpopular but I think making close male friendships gay for points makes it harder for men to be close without facing or feeling the stigma that its somehow gay. As someone who has had close friendships and seperate relationships its so hard to think how neil and todds friendship is called romantic. Its like really grasping at a best friend relationship to make it romantic/sexual somehow and besides a few moments of fun and laughs their shipping definately leaves a more negative impact in male friendships. idk random place but just thought dumbing
Yeah, it’s a shame so much of the lovely slow build-up is abridged, but I think RSL did a pretty amazing job with showing how Richard’s mindset developed :))
THIS A VERY SHORTENED VERSION!!! Before I read the book I listened to about 30 min of this and in reality it was over 150 pages so I really recommend reading the book first because this audiobook it’s missing a lot.

@@smithymcsmithface I can see how listening to a little before reading the book (like I did) would be an appetiser, but I rlly don’t think it’s a good idea to listen to the whole thing without reading the book first, since the stuff that’s cut from this REALLY affects how the characters appeal to the reader (the twins & Francis have like no personality & Bunny is 10X more likeable for example lol). It’s great that a shortened version exists 4 ppl who don’t love the original tho :))

This is a good plot overview (& beautifully read) but it misses a lot of scenes & the subtle development of relationships & details of the book; an enormous amount of the best quotes & speeches that examine the themes & satire r cut; a lot of the finer character details that make the Greek class so well-written r missing (the twins & Francis have basically NO personality in this whereas in the book they’re wonderfully complex) as well as the slow disintegration of their mental states (& a lot of things that make the novel so fantastic, like Richard’s unreliable narration & all the twists & turns of manipulation as he realises he’s been lied to again & again). Also they cut a lot of the gay stuff (like Francis hitting on Richard) cuz Richard in the book spends a great deal of time thinking about whether other ppl are gay & how he MOST DEFINITELY isn’t lol.

Oh my God I've only listened to the first ten minutes and though a lot of stuff is missing compared to the full novel, this is absolutely incredible! I love the different intonations he gives to each character, it's exactly how I've imagined their voices while reading!! Absolutely gonna listen to the whole thing
This is one of the best things on TH-cam. Not only does it feel like Neil (a sweetheart) reading this to you, but after just finishing its entirety it was superb. Literally went on a trip to this world. Now to read the book!
U SHOULD oh my goodness, this version cuts out so much stuff that is just incredible (like the slow development of Richard’s relationship w the Greek class, the beautiful delving into Henry’s emotional issues, Richard doing cocaine in the Burger King parking lot & being “subtly” gay towards both Francis & Henry lmao and so many beautiful speeches and quotes from Julian’s lessons that were cut for time!!) Seriously, it’s kinda slow-paced at times but I can’t recommend the novel enough; it’s an all time favourite of mine :):)

I’m not one for wordy prose, but have been interested in this book for the plot, and to know what shenanigans led up to Bunny’s death. Now that I’ve listened to this abridged version of the story and have a clearer understanding of what’s to come, I am much more interested in reading the full text to catch the subtleties and details I didn’t get here. Glad this was an option or I never would have dared take on the book.

I just finished the full version of the book and I have this strange feeling I’ve only experienced a few times before. The feeling of having just experienced a tragedy without actually experiencing anything outside of my head. Usually when I read a book it makes me happy and excited to continue reading. This book made me deeply distressed and yet I couldn’t put it down. This book is just fantastically horrifying.

Love this and I know it's the abridged version, but I would have given anything to hear RSL read that story about Bunny's term paper on John Donne and Metahemeralism. The final sentence of it made me burst out laughing the first time I ever read it.
