I marched Garfield that year and was in the very end of the Z-pull. the OPPOS ITE end. So when I heard the crowd commotion, I thought we were just killing it. I Had no idea what happened on the other end until I saw some members with bent horns. What some people don’t realize with the z-pull is that some people (myself included) were backing up blind with no point of reference. Backing away from the 50 yard line at an awkward angle with no line of sight of the form was dangerous every time!
Wow! What a find. And the photo of “the incident” as well. To those who don’t know, this show was unlike anything ever attempted or presented on any marching field at any time anywhere ever up to this point. It was absolutely groundbreaking. We had never seen or heard anything like this ever before. Thank you for posting!
Thanks for sharing this tape as well as the photo. I was in the Side 1 end zone with Sky Ryders watching this as it happened. We had no. idea that the one kid suffered a broken leg, We were just stunned that it happened at all. I remember remarking to some of my friends after we got off the field about how slick that dead, brown grass was that afternoon during prelims, and I remember nearly falling during our drum solo. I think like 14 Cadets went down, but they were up and in place in record time, and the corps marched off the field. I seem to remember the guy with the broken leg getting off the field before collapsing at the track gate. I do not know whether this is true or not; it was a long time ago.
So that day I went into to talk to the DCI judges dressed as a CHEF! Compared our activity to a smorgasbord that there are foods on the menu that will fit the liking of everyone just like the different drum corps.! I finished by being forwarding the they were about to see on hellava performance by Garfield that night! And that is was! I was sitting up in a box next to a few corps directors. They were going CRAZY during and after the Cadets performance, Don Warren the then director of the Cavaliers ran out of his box and said to me "UNBELIEVABLE!" NOW THATS A DRUM CORPS!!!
I've been looking everywhere for this photo since I heard of the incident a few months ago. Having it now and the reaction of the brass judge is awesome. glad they went on to take the championship that year.
@@samsignorelli LOL. Yep. I absolutely LOVED BD and Garfield back in this era. It was as close as we could imagine - but looking back without bias, I don't think it should have been that close. '84 Devils is still one of my favorites, but it was fantastic old school, some "park and blow" stuff - while Garfield seemed to push the activity forward about 10 years AND performed it really cleanly and effectively.
@@ImVee10 I think 1983 and 1985 Cadets were so far ahead of everyone but that BD show in 1984 was musically flawless from beginning to end. There might have been some execution mistakes but the choice and flow of the music is almost perfect. Decent drill, no Cadets but, marching isn't the whole score.
@@feverpa @sam signorelli @Vee 10 @Reno Railfanning I have a video in the works covering this incident. Since this is the only known photo and tape of that night. I'm excited to get it done.

13:30 "Watch Out! OH MY GOD" - That must have been crazy to see in 1984

I'm not glad they won finals....but I was in BD, so I'm a touch biased.

@@feverpa Garfield finished 9th/12 in field percussion. They were lucky to win DCI.

I was there watching from the stands when they fell, we were speechless.
1 person from 1987 Santa Clara drumline, really needs therapy!
