- At the meeting of the Chief Military Expert Council held on the 4th of February 1956, it was decided to rearm one Sherman with the 122 mm A-19 gun, and to test whether this modification was feasible and cost-effective at all. The idea was that, by installing a large caliber gun in the M4 tank chassis, it would extend its operational service life. At the same time, this would increase its firepower and allow it to deal with more modern tanks and to be used as a heavy fire support vehicle.

You're not really that off. I work in a Slovene (former Yugoslavia) steel mill and we have machines from Yugoslavia, East Germany, West Germany and USA. The entire cold rolling line was bought from Pittsburgh in the eighties, when Yugoslavia was still red and not dead.
Entire Yugo politics doctrine was - we will stay unaligned so we can get money, know how and industry from the west, and weapons from the east. We weren't picky about the culture so we got both.

@@VersusARCH Not really, Stalin wanted Yugoslavia desperately because access to Mediterranean sea where he can oppose to NATO. With loss of Yugoslavia this way was closed and USSR did never got chance to influence south Europe. One good thing was that 1948 there was Berlin blockade so Stalin could not risk using huge army to invade Yugoslavia because there was fear that western allies could use force to break trough on the way to Berlin...

Yugoslavia in the Cold War was, in a more limited way, like Sweden or France, a treasure cove of local products and variants of foreign made weapons. Amazing.
It's always interesting to see post war Sherman conversion they're just fascinating.
the IDF used the M 51 Super Sherman up to the mid 1980's.The Egyptians even fitted FL-10 Turrets to ( some of ) their M4A4's , one of which was captured by the IDF , and is on display in central Israel, at Yad La-Shiryon .

Basically the issue with the Yugoslav products in the beginning of 50' was that they didnt have the knowledge base, no engineers so they tried to copy the existing parts without any knowledge of materials technology , etc, and do everything on the shop-floor level. Not so surprisingly the outcome was of dubious value .Tank type A would brake down all the time, the t 34 engine in Sherman would overheat , the price unit in a relatively small scale production was enormously larger than a price of a proven design of contemporary tank of the time. In the late 70' when they finally manged to build an industrial base , Yugoslavia took a T72 license and managed to successfuly improved it. By late 80' they even managed to do a better or at least as same quality of engine pack as Russians and by 90' all was gone.
Yes, all starts are difficult. There was industry and engineering in creation and needed also time to coordinate. Also the industry was destroyed and did need to be rebuild. But this brought big knowledge for after

I have to make a correction here. A limited amount of shermans were used early in the civil war in croatia by the croatian side mostly in the first year but didn't see major combat operations unlike some other WW2 vehicles like the M36 or M18
Do you know where I can find video of pictures of the M4 being used in croatia in 1990 or 91? I have seen the other vehicles in use at that time.
@@TheWedabest you would have to go try to get news archives and hope to find em. I recall 2 short shots showing them dating from 91 that used to sometimes run in some segments of history program. Actually i think one actually showed serb insurgents using one. They also are or used to be in one of the croatian museum's dedicated to the war. I know the dubrovnik one has a sherman alongside two WW2 SPGs i think M18s and M36.
Any details you can provide would be helpful. If you can list dates or places, people might be able to hunt down the new reports with some precision, maybe even find video on youtube. There are plenty of people putting up old photos and video of the civil war, but I doubt many, if any, are thinking it important to include keywords that would specify the Yugoslav Shermans.

It was a prototype of an assault cannon (SO-122 = self-propelled weapon 122 mm) intended to support infantry and break down fortified positions. M-19 gun did not have APCR of HEAT shells, only AP and 2 types of HE shells. That says a lot. I read somewhere that the project was suspended due to problems with loading the cannon and too much recoil during the fire.

a bit off subject , BUT at Yad La-Shiryon , Israel's tank museum and memorial to the tank corps , there is a FrankenT-34 ( T -100 self -propelled anti-tank gun) captured from the Egyptians , which consists of a T -34 chassis and body BUT with a M 1944 (BS-3 )100 mm field gun in place of the 76 or 85 mm " regular "gun
Egypt also converted some T-34s into 122mm self-propelled howitzers.
@@RedXlV how about the Egyptian conversion of a Sherman tank with the turret of an AMX 13 turret , I've pictures of that , and the T 100 self propelled anti- tank gun , as well as other tanks captured by the IDF , INCLUDING a Panzer 4 Ausf G

Bigger guns is cool but not always better
Big guns don't mean much. Look at Germany in WWII. They built some of the worst tanks despite having some of the biggest guns
@Faux Diplomacy True, it had less penetration than the Israeli M-51, but do note that the SO-122 basically has the same 122mm gun as the IS-series. So, as it's intended purpose as a support tank? It would work pretty damn good.
Edit: The main differences between the A-19 and D-25T is the recoil mechanism.
As meme? it was impractical. The M51 Super Sherman 105 mm already had its shortcoming (cramped turret & massive recoil).

i didn't know about Sherman 122 in Yugo army. Even tho I'm from Yugoslavia and tank nerd I didn't know about Sherman 122.
I knew about T34 100. As soon as they produce one tank ..T55A and T55b was brought from Russia and T55 is name of the game until 2010 last one is retired as a tank. I believe there is bridge carrier T55 in use today
When Stalin expelled Yugoslavia from the Communist International he expected Tito to fall from power when the Yugoslav economy collapse. The United States stepped in to provide support as a result Yugoslavia became the only East European Communist state to receive western economic and military aid during the height of the cold war.
Well technically yes and no.
Yugoslavia is Communist only by name since around 1949.
Since they realized The union doesn't have enough manpower to operate as Purely communist aka Voluntary for the benefit of all.
The mindset was there but the capability of WWII reduced population demanded a tinge of capitalism so It became Neo Socialist. Basically what modern Socialist countries are.
Government controlled quazi-Capitalism.
Business isnt owned directly by the Government but have no Final say if something is out of order.
US helped so They would Abolish all ties to Communism, since Tito was very Flashy and loved to appear everywhere so alot of American would see Working Socialism which is directly opposing what Politicians back at home say, and Russia helped so they stay Poster child of Communism.
Since Russian Communism didn't work and people hated it.
Yet Tito wanted to double date and never Do any of two sides solo, eventually West did his Regime in by Undermining.
Also Tito didn't know when to stop and Wanted to represent Waaaaaaaay larger than its actually possible.
However people were happy ,those who were not mostly left.
Basically ,mostly speaking from from Serbian perspective US and Russia were good friends to us Most throughout early History ,but here US didn't fight against Yugoslavia it fought against Communist Image that directly undermine Capitalism in a way US wants it to exist.
Same goes for Korea and Vietnam it wasn't for the people of Those countries it was for the people of US, to save the Illusion of perfection back home. And save peace in the country. Preventing The exact way used to disassemble Yugoslavia. Not that It was perfectly fine as it was but it was More good than bad according to people who lived trough it.
And Since He also didn't wanna be a poster child of Soviet Union They also abandoned him but kept him close enough, so he can't fully Go west.
So US didn't help Yugo out of the kindness of their heart but pure politics.
Same goes for Russia, although Russian People and most Balkan Slavs consider themselves Brothers in Origins. But that's on a personal level not Government level.

@@DexMaster881 companies in Yugoslavia was owned by workers in kind of self directed cooperatives. State or more single republics did give subventions for develop and after was a loan from the state owned banks. Of course, there was interactions in political way to influence decisions made by workers but de jure factories did belong to workers who had elected work council and managers. There was little private property, by private persons owned companies but in limited size. Any way, was bit more liberal as in eastern European countries

In Slovenia we have a nice collection of tanks from 2ww till modern times. Havent seen this one but lot of stuarts modified by JNA standards. Museum is stated in Pivka if anyone is interested.

Not sure if they changed MGs on those tanks.
Germans never used MG-42 in tanks, only the MG-34. Had to do with the difference in barrel removal. The MG-42 movements were virtually impossible from within a tank as far as the hull and coaxial machine guns.
@@amerigo88 Yes, the Geridid use MG 34. But this Franke -tank was Yugo project. The standard mashine gun of the YPA was copy (thanks to the tooling) of the MG 42. Same 7,92 caliber. Today Serbia is still one of the main exporters of the same caliber ammo. So, if they made new turret, probably, the coaxial mg was the copy of the MG 42. The American 7,62 Browning wasn't practical in that case. Also, infantry weapons for the YPA were M24, M48 and the german Kar98k. Yugoslavia hat the tools need to produce that kind of rifles as well as ammo from the royal days.
Back when I still played WoT, I swapped the model of the 105mm on the M4A1 Rev with.. I think the WZ-111 G-FT's 122mm cannon model, so I could larp as this tank.
To be fair, the two tanks likely would play similarly, although given that it's the 122mm A-19 and not the 105mm on the French Sherman, so less pen, accuracy, and reload, but same alpha.
It was honestly pretty fun, the M4A1 Rev for me was really enjoyable to play, so I had been excited to see the SO-122 added to WoT and War Thunder, though it would come to neither.

JNA was an army for the people, by the people and in the most cases - against the people. Strangely how the common JNA officer had a questionable intelect, but people in the military industry were quite inteligent and educated. Post-Yugoslav republics do use these fine industry traditions!
They should have installed rocket launchers as well on that turret. Why they did not make an AA variant as well with quad mounts for weapons? The Yugo Super Jumbo Sherman.
Rocket launcher with out guidance is useless since rockets are not so accurate as tank grenade and are slower to hit moving targets. At this time think even USA and USSR had to copy and develop German system of TOW missiles because Germans did during the war developed and even used different type of guided missiles
@@manjelos They did have the Caliope launcher. Nobody would have sold a German guided missile system to YUG in the 1950s. It was a big $$$.

It was a Jumbo Sherman for real It might have been useful on the Siegfried Line or on the Srem Front in 1944/45.. Why they did not simply buy some Stalin 2/3 tanks or upgunned a T54/55?

Video doesnt mentioned this but when Stalin died Ruso Yugoslav alliance kicked of slowly again, we gad plenty T55, T72 and licensed product T84 (which Americans were buying for their first war against Iraq). Video has many holes also re Yu armaments, for example our version of ak47 was vastly better than Russian or Hungarian versions. Plenty other weapons systems were co produced on licensing from Russia. Video doesn't mention ZUS ww2 ant aircraft vehicle or Praga or many other for that matter. There was more 1,000 tanks before civil war broke out, most of those were T55 and T72 though both versions had upgrades more so T72. Making Yugoslavia looks like 3rd world country seems to be the purpose of the video and the fact remains not even Stalin dared to Attack Yugoslavia when Tito told him to fck off in 1948. He did try to get Hungary and Romania but at the time we had almost 1 million ppl under arms and were better equipped and had more experience in warfare. There was a lot more to Yugoslavia than this short video that skipped hell of a lot of factual information.

I know; i. e., I've read, that the IDF not only put 90mm canon on their Shermies, & 1st deployed them--not sure--but think vs. Syria in in '67. M4A3E2 had a much more limited production run of 254 vehicles and the added armor was already pushing the suspension to its limits.

How was that even possible? The turret size basically determines the maximum size the gun, the germans werent even able to fit the 88 into the panthers turret, so how is it possible to fit a fuckin artillery into a shermans turret xD
