Oh, this is an easy one - the 1995 version! ❤ It was the most accurate to the book to start with, I thought the casting was spot on, and, you know....Colin Firth. 😂 Also, I thought the costumes were the most accurate, which is always lovely. But basically, Colin Firth LOL.
Fascinating, as always, thank you. One has to ask, why can't the aristocracy keep their legs shut? They do seem to get away with promiscuity quite freely...well, as long as they have money and power, I suppose. It seems to me that it's usually the middling sort that clutches their pearls at sexuality. Not much changes.
It's funny, isn't it? It's almost as though the more money and power, the more they were able to do what they told the rest of society not to do - and then you had those in a sort of gentry class, as you say, clutching their pearls while simultaneously trying to get their children into the upper classes. 😂

But if we're including legacy, I would say Edward III. Is that painting just before you show Althorp a depiction of Georgiana? The crescent moon is the symbol of Diana the Huntress. Was Diana named Diana as a nod to Georgiana?
Technically, it is meant to be 'George-jay-na' (like I say it), but I've also heard people pronounce it 'George-gee-ana'. I think it's one of those names where it's taken on two different pronunciations - the second one being more modern. ☺
Wow! So not only did Georgina and Princess Diana have similar impacts on society, and a bad marriage, but they were both Spencer's, who lived at Althorp?? Amazing.
She and her sister had 14 children between them, over a third of whom were the product of affairs. The extended family called them “Children of the Mist.” Jane Harley’s children of uncertain paternity were referred to as the “Harleian Miscellany.”
It is traditionally 'Georg-jay-na' as I'm saying it, but there is a second modern pronunciation of it as 'Georg-gee-ana', which is likely because it's not a name that's heard spoken aloud a lot.
Today we say the name as it’s written but in the 18th century, words and names were often pronounced differently than today. You will have noticed that many old aristocratic names are not pronounced at all how they are spelled.
It looks like Georgina and Diana had much more in common then the superficialities mentioned at the beginning: the infatuation with the media attention, the desire to be in the spotlight all the time…
Poor poor woman a gambling addict and a drunk and having to console herself with fashion and affairs ..had she been a common person this behavior would be frowned apon ..oh yes things havent changed that much ..let the rich do stuff its cute and excentric ..when poor well i need not use the words ...attention seaker
Hi, awesome live video history on Georgiana Spencer the Duchess of Devonshire. She is one of my favorite historical people in history. How are you doing? I'm doing well, and so is my cat Benjamin. Who is your favorite person in history? Benjamin and I always enjoy watching your history videos. Have a great day see you next video 😊
Hi Michelle, I'm glad you and Benjamin are doing well! My favourite person in history? It's tough to pin one person down as I like a lot of different figures, but I think my favourite is probably Empress Matilda. I'm fascinated by her entire life and how strong she was, and I think England would have turned into a very different place had she been able to become queen.
I'm not saying 'Georgina', but 'George-jay-na', the original pronunciation of the name. There is now a modern pronunciation of it as 'George-gee-ana', but it's not how she would have pronounced her name at the time.
I'm so confused about the pronunciation of her name. Everyone seems to say it as Georgaina but it is spelled Georgiana, like George-ee-ah-na. Even in the film about her, they were transposing the A and I. What gives?
Welcome to random British pronunciations! 😂 Honestly, I'm not sure why the pronunciation is that way, but it definitely is - I have a friend whose little girl has the same name, and is also pronounced 'George-jay-na'. Lots of people do also say it 'George-gee-ana' now, which I think of as a modern pronunciation. Neither is wrong, but Georgiana Cavendish was alive when the first pronunciation was used, so I stuck with that. ☺
5 minutes in and it's really unclear who this person is talking about when the 2 babies dying and gambling comes in. When I have to go back more than once, you've failed.
No, it's not. It's pronounced like I've said it - they even pronounce it that way it in the very expensive film. 'Georgina' is different from 'Georgiana'.
Third wheel is that extra unwanted person in a relationship with a couple. Fifth wheel is that person in a group. So in this case drebasing you are wrong.
Not AI, and I am pronouncing her name correctly. They even pronounced it that way it the big budget film of her life with Keira Knightly in, for heaven's sake! 😂
I love that this woman so thoroughly embraced her husband’s first extramarital child, even though it annoyed everyone. She loved that child and didn’t blame her and just loved her.
The fact that her husband had fathered a child before their marriage and she took the little girl in and loved her like her own speaks volumes about her, I think.
Gambling is a dangerous addiction that still destroys families.
Absolutely - I think it's very telling that not only did she obviously gravitate towards it due to her parents' gambling when she was younger, but that a lot of her mother's reprimands were centred around it. I think Margaret understood she had helped facilitate Georgiana into that lifestyle through her own actions.
Yes it's in my family as well as alcoholism 😢
It always does.

Technically, it is meant to be 'George-jay-na' (like I say it), but I've also heard people pronounce it 'George-gee-ana'. I think it's one of those names where it's taken on two different pronunciations - the second one being more modern. ☺
So did I! I'm sure it should bt pronounced Georgie- anna
Wow! So not only did Georgina and Princess Diana have similar impacts on society, and a bad marriage, but they were both Spencer's, who lived at Althorp?? Amazing.
So it seems mental instability may run in this family, which is not unusual; though not fully researched at this time.
God, I love your voice!
Aww, thank you! That's made my day. ☺
She and her sister had 14 children between them, over a third of whom were the product of affairs. The extended family called them “Children of the Mist.” Jane Harley’s children of uncertain paternity were referred to as the “Harleian Miscellany.”
Funny how her and Princess Diana had so much in common. 3rd wheel to Camilla..and both followed by paparazzi and anorexia instead of gambling..
Isn't it Georgiana (like Victoriana), rather than Georgaina?
It’s bananas! 😂
What happened to her after the birth of her son?
I've continued her story in Part 2. 😊
@@HistorysForgottenPeople perfect! Thanks so much!
The Dutchess was an excellent portrail about this
History repeats itself considering that her descendant, Princess Diana, suffered a very similar fate as hers.
She’s not Diana’s “descendant”. Her Brother was Diana’s descendant. Georgina is her grt, however many times, aunt. A descendant is a grandparent.
Diana Spencer's direct ancestor.
Is the pronunciation of Georgiana correct?
Yes, although there is a more modern pronunciation that is 'George-gee-ana'. 😊
It was the pronunciation of the time.
Princess Diana was related to Georgina.
She didn't seem very prudent, moral, or smart.
Princess Diana was definitely more popular than Georgianna. No comparison at all, Diana had fans on all seven continents.
Speaking of the American War of Independence, have you heard of Deborah Sampson?
I hadn't! I just went to look her up now, she sounds like a very interesting figure! I'm adding her to my list, thank you. ☺
❤
There is a movie, The Duchess about her.
❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤
She was a messed up piece of work… yeesh!
I think some of it was personality, and some of it was societal pressure as well - especially from her own parents.
History repeats itself, hmmm.
Her husband. 🤦
Great episode, but isn’t it GeorgiANA and not GeorgINA?
I'm not saying 'Georgina', but 'George-jay-na', the original pronunciation of the name. There is now a modern pronunciation of it as 'George-gee-ana', but it's not how she would have pronounced her name at the time.
Princess Diana's ancestress!
❤
Poor little rich girl!
The Late Esteemed Royal Princess Diana 🌟 came from pure stock , something that her second , now pitiful son Harry ,has obviously ignored.
So she was human.
She was a great lady. Her husband and Bess not so much
I'm so confused about the pronunciation of her name.
She looks so much like Diana
My ancestor.
Why is her name pronounced Georgian nah and not heritage ee sh na
You can see the genetics in Diana’s face
Looks like Diana!
5 minutes in and it's really unclear who this person is talking about when the 2 babies dying and gambling comes in. When I have to go back more than once, you've failed.
Sorry but I can’t hear her name pronounced like that !
You mean, the correct way?
The nose and face shape looks like strong DNA.
Didn't the upper crust ladies have any morals at all??
Wow Charles and Diana previous karmic entanglement?
Georg ee ana. Not Georgaina.
No, it's not. 'Georg-gee-ana' is a modern pronunciation.
Georgaina?
Not being British ..but still "Georgiina"
No, it's not. It's pronounced like I've said it - they even pronounce it that way it in the very expensive film. 'Georgina' is different from 'Georgiana'.
The saying is fifth wheel, not third wheel.
No, it isn't. dictionary.cambridge.org/dictionary/english/third-wheel
With a couple - it’s third wheel. It’s a common saying.
Fifth wheel. 5th wheel, not third wheel.
?
Third wheel is that extra unwanted person in a relationship with a couple. Fifth wheel is that person in a group. So in this case drebasing you are wrong.
It’s their wheel.
This has to be yet another useless AI narration, - it is horrendous that it cannot pronounce the name of the duchess and really annoying.
Not AI, and I am pronouncing her name correctly. They even pronounced it that way it the big budget film of her life with Keira Knightly in, for heaven's sake! 😂
@@HistorysForgottenPeople Well I am British and I am telling you that is NOT the correct pronounciation - it is Georgie-Anna
@@sonaterese799at that time it was pronounced George- ay- nah, not George- ee-na. The video narrator is correct.
Er Keira Knightly bad choice 👎
Still trying to trash Lady Di. You should be ashamed of yourselves.
Umm....what? 😂
