One point to note is that if Allah had decreed all of those three worst case scenarios, those could have been enough as trails to judge their faith anyway. But Allah chose to give them a smaller calamity to save them from a much bigger one, which implies that when Allah tests us with hardships, He does not simply wants to cause us pain, He actually looks out for us and He wants to make things easier for us. HE ACTUALLY WANTS EASE FOR US. And if you think you don't see any sort of Khair in His hikmah then your calamity is a smaller one as compared to the bigger hell you were probably digging for yourself.
