This is an excellent guide and a perfect illustration of why I love the modern era of information sharing. There's no way on Earth I would have ever figured out how to put this all together without hours of frustrated tinkering. Heck, I wouldn't even know to buy the template guide and centering cone. Thanks for the great explanation of how everything goes together (I was able to do it pretty quickly with your video tutorial)!
In the router manual on page 20, it explains the centering procedure. The cone is inserted from the other end and they actually say to center it with the adapter in place.
Yup. Not sure what you mean by inserted from the other end but I agree that if you don’t center with the template guide and bushing installed, you’re just hoping everything is centered and not actually centering anything except the baseplate.
Thanks for this vid! I bought the PC jig and a PC bushing set that I didn’t need, but couldn't figure out how to use them with my Bosch router. I bought the the Bosch adapter kit along with the cone, waited 3 weeks for delivery to Turkey and they arrived today! Can't wait to start dovetailing drawers tomorrow!
Thanks for making it so easy! I bought the adapters because i knew i needed the for routing templates. Now I totally understand it. You should write manuals for Bosch!
I found the Bosch adapter to be more pain than it was worth. Much cheaper just to buy a clear universal base plate that accepts the PC bushings. No fumbling with all the pieces, Plus you get the benefit of a clear base to see your cuts through
Ah, I suppose it’s both bad news that it doesn’t work out of the box with Bosch, but the good news is that the adapters are very good quality and not too pricey.
@@MasonWoodshop I suppose. Are the other pieces in that Bosch adaptor set good for anything else that you’ve come across? Just wondering if I should buy the set or just the adaptor. Thanks. Good series of videos. Trying to sort out my jig.
I've used most of the bushings on other projects over the past couple of years so they can be useful if you do other work that requires the use of guide bushings.
Thanks a lot I’m going the same route hooked on the dovetail’s gotta have it. You gave me exactly what I was looking for and demonstrated it for beginners like me. Awesome dude.
Thanks for the thorough explanation. None of the online images show the tool installed so it was really helpful to see how it all works. Now the decision is to buy just the adapter parts or the whole set.
Today when I was setting up my new Bosch 1617EVSPK, I tried to remove the bottom plate screws with a Phillips head like you mentioned. At first I thought the screws were stripped until I got really close to the screw heads and saw those tiny torx heads. The manual was useless about what bit drive to use to loosen the plate for the centering cone or to install the adapter plate. I also wish there was a case diagram sheet that shows how all the components fit into the awesome case. It was like trying to solve some Egyptian Pyramid puzzle. I'm joking, it wasn't that hard to figure out but just a minor pain. Nice informative video as always, Sir.
You're correct. The manual doesn't tell you which drive to use to turn each screw head. It also doesn't tell you not to eat yellow snow or not to get into the bathtub and pretend that the router is a nuclear submarine.
Another excellent video. I have the same router and PC jig, which I am just beginning to use. Your videos have been indispensable. Thanks for taking the time to explain things so clearly.
Thank you for watching and leaving such a positive comment! I definitely got into router mode in 2021 and I'm glad I did. Such a versatile tool, but intimidating to use at first and the quantity of accessories can be overwhelming.
Thanks for an excellent tutorial! A question,,,,why not just use the Bosch guide bushings? I am totally new to a router so please excuse what may be an obvious question! Thanks again!
Thanks for watching and a great question! Whenever I’m able, I do use the Bosch bushings, but with my dovetail jig I always use the Porter Cable bushings in the Bosch adapter as they are properly set for the jig and provided bits. This set gives some great flexibility at a reasonable price.
Isn’t it funny how, as you mentioned, the PC guide bushings became more or less the industry standard, and now Porter Cable doesn’t even make routers anymore?! I think they still sell the dovetail jig though.
The Bosch centering cone is made of plastic and not centered. rotate the router shaft with the cone installed and you can see it wobble. I set up a dial indicator and it was off center by a lot.
I’m not 100% certain, but my understanding has always been that Dewalt routers were compatible with Porter Cable bushings out of the box since they have the same parent company. I could be totally wrong on this assumption, of course.
@@MasonWoodshop I got it sorted- is not compatible with the faceplate on my router but is compatible with the faceplate that is on the plunge attachment
Buy another fixed base for your router table, I did, and it came with a router, an older 1617 without the variable speed for less than the price of a new fixed base! You can even take off the handles to make more room under your table. And they are bushings not templates.
Save some money and make a base. I have a 20 year old craftsman router. There is no adapter for it. I just made one out of a piece of scrap mahogany, and it works like a charm.
He says “the hopes are it perfectly comes through this hole” (9:45). What he’s really saying is the centering cone only center the base but we are relying on faith that the template guide and bushing were manufactured with faultless tolerance because we didn’t check to see that they were centered. So is there a centering cone that can be used with template guide and bushing installed for a truly centered template guide??
100% agree and I’m growing increasingly frustrated with the setup process. It always works, but I’m planning to move to the new Festool myself sometime this year b
What a BS setup. Looks at the box of parts for a stupid bushing!👎 An easier solution is a CLEAR plastic plate knocked out on a cnc router that fits your bushing for that dovetail jig. Problem solved. Dewalt says they give you the cone with the routers, but they lie. Too bad PC quit making routers. They were just as good as that mexican bosch.

Glad to hear it was helpful and thanks for such a motivating comment! Router accessories and compatibility can be a weird space, ha!
When you put that Phillip's head screwdriver on those Torx screws it made the Baby Jesus cry.
noticed the same thing, Wulf
this is the exact setup I have & have been searching for ways to use PC guide bushings on my Bosch routers....question answered!
Happy to hear that - thanks for watching!
Thank you. This is exactly what I needed to set up my router for dovetails with the porter cable jig.

Thanks. Thought I would need to buy a new router plate (and actually ordered one from Rockler) until I saw your video. Thanks for the clarity!
Thanks for watching and leaving a comment! Router accessories is a fascinating world.
9:53 Treat the motor and all the inner prongs on the fixed base with a little graphite and it's much easier to reassemble.
Thank you for sharing this information!

Thanks for sharing! I agree that visibility stinks with the setup I was using. Which universal base plate did you end up using?
I got my PC dovetail jig a couple weeks ago and wanted to use it today. Sadly I also have a Bosch router.

You're correct. The manual doesn't tell you which drive to use to turn each screw head. It also doesn't tell you not to eat yellow snow or not to get into the bathtub and pretend that the router is a nuclear submarine.

As an option, could one use the Bosch PR110 subbase that is threaded to use with the template guides?

The centering cone goes from the other-outer side...so that it presses on the plate that you screw onto the base.

Any idea if it is possible to use RA1173AT dust extraction kit and this quick release guide bushing at the same time?
Great question, unfortunately I don’t know. It does not work with my Oneida Dust Hood, although it is much different from the RA1173AT.
Are the PC bushings 30mm? Is that industry standard?
Why would you want to use th PC bushings when you purchased the Bosch bushings? Thank you
PC bushings were specific to the dovetail jig being used and are generally good quality. I did need to use the Bosh adapter.
Does this template work on a Dewalt router? I just got the dovetail jig and now I’m thoroughly confused on how to mount the bushings
I’m not 100% certain, but my understanding has always been that Dewalt routers were compatible with Porter Cable bushings out of the box since they have the same parent company. I could be totally wrong on this assumption, of course.

It’s stupid that you have to buy that centering tool separately. When you buy the router you should get with the router
