  • WELLINGTON
The tiny capital city perched at the bottom of the South Island is set to become the Hollywood of the Pacific, thanks to visionary filmmaker Sir Peter Jackson. If he wants some inspiration, Tony can provide him with heart-warming pooches, bloody strike re-enactments, and even an iconic New Zealand dessert.

PM Peter Fraser was a good man. He extended an invitation and provided refuge, care and education to 734 Polish war orphans after WWII. In their memoirs they had often underlined how well they were received by the locals and remembered and admired Wellington among other places they had been passing through on their way to Pahiatua, where they were settled. Poland is forever going to be in New Zealand's debt.

OMG, I've performed (with an amateur group) at Wellington Opera House. No one told me Pavlova had danced there. I'd have fainted! I found out later that Vivian Leigh and Laurence Olivier performed there too. OMG.

    * north island. central wellington may be small - because of hills and valleys. larger wellington could be seen to include lower hutt, upper hutt, eastbourne, porirua, tawa, petone, wainuiomata, etc - all close, interconnected by motorways and people travel around as if it is one city.

The Hippopotamus is a nice place. I've dined there and had afternoon tea. We saw Peter Jackson there once.

Looks like Wellington has moved, according to the dot on the map at about 0:56 - halfway between Wellington and Palmerston North!

I think the person who designed the Beehive was a Darlek fan.

    Hi Tony,
Just so you know you need to edit you description. Wellington is at the bottom of the North Island , not the South . Hope your having a great day.
