Factoid. I saw Jerry Lewis and The Playboys at the Airmen's Club at U-Tapao Air Base Thailand in '69 or '70. This was after he himself had gotten out of the US Army....he was drafted, and after his service he got the band and then did tours of all of the bases in South East Asia. About 2017 I saw his show in Park City Utah , after the show he went backstage and a roadie was on the stage picking stuff up and I asked him if he would take a note backstage for Gary, he said OK, and the note I wrote said " Thanks for the show that you gave in Thailand all those years ago, I appreciated it then and your show tonight. Thanks". The roadie went back and as we were waiting for the crowd to get out we were standing around and the roadie came back and asked me if I could come backstage and meet Gary, of heck yeah, so away my wife I went, got backstage, met Gary and chatted for awhile, he couldn't remember the Thailand show, he said they did so many shows at so many bases he couldn't remember them all. But I did. I thanked him for the visit and we left.
@@1953childstar Anyone that served in Viet-Nam, Thailand or most places in South East Asia as well as many Navy men in women who supported the war in Asia are considered a Viet-Nam Veteran...many never set foot in the country and usually have the Viet-Nam service ribbon. As far as Mr. Lewis's service record goes, I don't know what his service jacket reflects, but the point of my story above, years ago, speaks to my meeting with him after a concert and to share a pleasant memory and not his military service, a point which you seemed to have missed from my comment.

I have this 45 that was given to me in the 1960s. I never knew Gary Lewis was Jerry Lewis’s son. Lol. I had a few of their 45s. Never too old to learn something new.
I remember those so well, I was 25, loved Their songs, now I'm 72, and still identify with the songs meaning. This Band was very delightful back in the day, and all the others, mean people with ugly remarks should watch Disney's Bambi again, when His Bunny friend told Him what his mother taught him.... shut the heck up, grow up, & just try to be kind, stop insulting others. Man how long has it been. I use to play this all day long. In the summertime it was Gary Lewis and the Playboys, Herman's Hermits , Archie's, wow what a time. Love Potion #9 , Sugar Sugar, on and on. Johnny Rivers man I miss those times.

I have just come across this song for the first time and I really love it, can't stop listening. It's the melodic wurlitzer backing that does it. Great vid as well, the frozen pose little girls, the zooming in and out and the drummer on the stand. So surreal yet totally charming.

I forgot his name I think his last name is Macklin. I decided to look for Gary Lewis videos on you tube and I found a few where him and the Playboys were performing live without the backup singer and it confirms his not so good voice. Nevertheless I don't h as very any ill will toward anyone who has the guts to perform in front of an audience and don't want to take your enjoyment away. Have a good weekend
Their songs still give me a lump in my throat. I was in Jr. High with a really heavy crush on a girl who only wanted me to be a "friend". She once asked me, in tears, to tell another boy that she really loved HIM! Oh well. Eventually I found true love with another!
We had the 45 rpms, watched Hulabaloo, Shindig, the 60s was a memorable time, and as the decade ended, we went to the moon, Vietnam War and Woodstock. The times they were a-changing.
Gary Lewis was voted singer of the year in 1965 ahead of Frank Sinatra and Elvis. What an upbeat great song. They were hired on the spot at Disneyland and we can see why.

Saw Gary in Williamsport, PA in the early '80s. He was touring with Flo and Eddie, The Grassroots, and the Buckinghams. The show was outside at a minor league ballpark. I had great seats! Great memory!!!

That's because Jerry Lewis was a total a-hole behind closed doors. All throughout his 35 year marriage to his first wife Patti Palmer (the mother of his six sons) he openly cheated on her with dozens of women and was emotionally abusive to her and their sons. All of Lewis's children and grandchildren from his first marriage were excluded from inheriting any part of his estate when he died in 2017. Lewis left his *entire estate* to his second wife Sandra Pitnick (whom he was married to for 34 years up until his death) and their adopted daughter Danielle. Lewis also sexually assaulted, harassed and verbally abused his female co-stars from his movies. 😡
Gary is still and well. He lives about 20 minutes from my house in upstate NY. And he is still playing live shows . ( mostly in Vegas I think ) I’m surprised most also had no idea that was Carl Radle on bass . After all , he played on Layla etc. with Derek and the Dominos . Not ever a cool band , but they sure had some cool hits back when rock was more simple and fun .
Bruce, That's very interesting. That band was really hot in the mid sixties with a string of hits. I thought they were great and as a youngster they were my favorite band at the time.
I Saw him interview on local Rochester NY TV a couple of years ago and I think he lives in Penfield or Irondequoit. A suburb but not sure. I was surprised to know cause over the years I lived in both areas.
I met him after a concert in Cobleskill NY. He and the Playboys performed at the local fair. He was so personable and very down to earth. It was a very enjoyable evening. In 1978 I was scheduled to park cars at a local MN cantina; Gary Lewis & The Playboys were playing. Unfortunately, the Vikings were scheduled to play the Bears on Monday Night Football that night. After being on duty until 8:00 pm I decided no one was coming and abandoned ship to watch the game; the Vikings won 24-20. The next day I learned the cantina had become an absolute madhouse and was packed for Gary Lewis. That was the end of that job.

Always thought this was Gary and the Playboys best hit.....As someone else said - an underrated yet Great group. They had a very special and unique sound that was just right for the times and still wears well over the years. Trouble was - the mid 60's was a fabulous time in music history when the most soon to be famous and always be remembered performers were coming out with hit after hit, and with fierce competition from the likes of the Beatles, Beach Boys, Rolling Stones, The Four Seasons, etc., and all the "soul" greats - it wasn't always easy to get the airtime and attention a very good group such as this, deserved or hoped to get.

I liked G. Lewis & the Playboys in the mid 1960's. I recall hearing on AM radio that Gary went to Vietnam. I give him credit- The band suffered as a result.
My father used to watch Jerry's kids when they bowled Junior leagues at Hollywood Bowl. Jerry would just drop them off out front and not come in. Their mom would come to pick them up. She would talk to my dad until they were done and ready to leave. He said she was a very nice lady. Always asking how they were doing and behaving themselves.
His songs were mostly regular guy songs, not real trippy. So his voice worked well with them, I thought. Sounded like any guy singing them, not a vocal virtuoso. Fun, relatable, not too emo.
Amazing to see how many comments in the last few weeks (May 2019) or so! Gary Lewis apparently lives now in Boulder City, NV. (no casinos there!), and very rarely does someone convince him to put a group together and go out and perform his old songs! His Dad died a few years ago, and we miss him, but.. Gary and the Playboys had a BIG string of hits that should have him on stage everywhere for the next 10 years! After all, we still see Gary Puckett, Frankie Avalon, Peter Noone (Hermans Hermits), Tommy James and the Shondells, and all other 1960's rock n roll groups EVERY WEEK her in Las Vegas, how hard would it be to have Gary Lewis here somewhere every week?
Actually Gary does perform but perhaps not as often as he once did. I often see him on a bill with several other oldies acts. But hey...not every singer in their 70s is Mick Jagger. Maybe he's enjoying life and not wanting to be on the road all the time. He's 73, you know?
I used to love this fantastic singer and band since i was a kid, 11 y/o then. Til now i enjoy listening their wonderful song. " autumn" & many others.💕💕
I had no idea that this was his son! But like all the others here I know Jerry treated his kids horribly I'm really glad to see that this guy was able to do something a little different and have fun at it
I saw them briefly when I was 10 in 1964 before they really took off. They played a performance for enlisted men at San Diego's Naval Training Center at Luce Auditorium. I had just come from a custom car show at Golden Hall where I had bought a chrome plastic German helmet (Hot Rod/Biker merch) that I wore 24/7. Some crusty old swab grabbed it off my head and stomped it to pieces on the auditorium floor yelled at me about how I was dishonoring thousands of fighting men that died for my country. I thought he was bat-shit crazy and that soon someone would put him in a straight jacket and cart him away. Instead, I got kicked out and nobody bothered to explain why my souvenir from the custom car show was like being draped in a confederate flag at the Apollo Theater.

Some people are saying that Jerry didn't support his Son's act but he had him in several movies, on the Telethon, here on Hullabaloo, and in other ways. According to Wikipedia he is still performing at 77.
RAEL - It's a fact that Jerry didn't support Gary's MUSIC career, despite early appearances. There's plenty of information out there on this... and also about Jerry *intentionally* not leaving any inheritance to his sons. Look it up. Jerry was an a**hole in real life.

Sounds pretty bad....without knowing his relationship with his adult kids. Maybe they turned into reprehensible people against his wishes. Hard saying. But it also says that he supported Gary early on. He had parts in some of Jerry's movies. And on the Telethon and Hullabaloo and so forth. He got a lot of boost in the early days.
One night, I went dancing with some friends at this place, called the 'Saddleback Inn' I believe it was called. I don't really remember what kind of place it was. In southern California somewhere. Between dances, I wandered out into the lobby; it was a huge lobby. I was alone out in there, and all of a sudden, Gary comes walking over to me. A real sweet guy. I talked with him for a while, I don't really remember about what, I was so jazzed. I was an enormous fan of his music. And of course I had to ask him about pop. It was a trip. I mean, Where the hell was everybody ? I didn't know why I was all alone with the guy. But was so cool. My heart is full-up with his music. Anyway, some comments can be kinda wierd.

The drumming definitely sounds like *Mr. Hal Blaine* himself. I can tell his style from a mile away. Jazz Drummer who loved Rock n Roll. I'm sad to say that I just looked it up and discovered that the Legend Hal Blaine literally just passed away 2 months ago! 3/11/2019 😔 He is the one who literally COINED the phrase *"The Wrecking Crew"* and had 35,000 sessions under his belt. RIP- Legend Hal Blaine.

decided to look for Gary Lewis videos on you tube and I found a few where him and the Playboys were performing live without the backup singer and it confirms his not so good voice. Nevertheless I don't h as very any ill will toward anyone who has the guts to perform in front of an audience and don't want to take your enjoyment away. Have a good weekend

Their songs still give me a lump in my throat. I was in Jr. High with a really heavy crush on a girl who only wanted me to be a "friend". She once asked me, in tears, to tell another boy that she really loved HIM! Oh well. Eventually I found true love with another!

Gary Lewis was voted singer of the year in 1965 ahead of Frank Sinatra and Elvis. What an upbeat great song. They were hired on the spot at Disneyland and we can see why.

I remember hearing this song on the radio and loving it. This is a cute piece. Funny how "clown" is in the title, and his Dad is known for being a clown of comedy.

Saw Gary in Williamsport, PA in the early '80s. He was touring with Flo and Eddie, The Grassroots, and the Buckinghams. The show was outside at a minor league ballpark. I had great seats! Great memory!!!

That's because Jerry Lewis was a total a-hole behind closed doors. All throughout his 35 year marriage to his first wife Patti Palmer (the mother of his six sons) he openly cheated on her with dozens of women and was emotionally abusive to her and their sons. All of Lewis's children and grandchildren from his first marriage were excluded from inheriting any part of his estate when he died in 2017. Lewis left his *entire estate* to his second wife Sandra Pitnick (whom he was married to for 34 years up until his death) and their adopted daughter Danielle. Lewis also sexually assaulted, harassed and verbally abused his female co-stars from his movies. 😡

Gary is still and well. He lives about 20 minutes from my house in upstate NY. And he is still playing live shows . ( mostly in Vegas I think ) I’m surprised most also had no idea that was Carl Radle on bass . After all , he played on Layla etc. with Derek and the Dominos . Not ever a cool band , but they sure had some cool hits back when rock was more simple and fun .
Bruce, That's very interesting. That band was really hot in the mid sixties with a string of hits. I thought they were great and as a youngster they were my favorite band at the time.

I Saw him interview on local Rochester NY TV a couple of years ago and I think he lives in Penfield or Irondequoit. A suburb but not sure. I was surprised to know cause over the years I lived in both areas.
I met him after a concert in Cobleskill NY. He and the Playboys performed at the local fair. He was so personable and very down to earth. It was a very enjoyable evening. I am not quite as old, but still a senior citizen. Everyone danced and had a fantastic evening. Certainly would be enjoyable to see him again.. I always enjoyed his music! 👍🙂👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍

In 1978 I was scheduled to park cars at a local MN cantina; Gary Lewis & The Playboys were playing. Unfortunately, the Vikings were scheduled to play the Bears on Monday Night Football that night. After being on duty until 8:00 pm I decided no one was coming and abandoned ship to watch the game; the Vikings won 24-20. The next day I learned the cantina had become an absolute madhouse and was packed for Gary Lewis. That was the end of that job.
Gary had some of my favorite songs from the mid-sixties. These songs were great and happy tunes! Real solid oldies now!

Always thought this was Gary and the Playboys best hit.....As someone else said - an underrated yet Great group. They had a very special and unique sound that was just right for the times and still wears well over the years. Trouble was - the mid 60's was a fabulous time in music history when the most soon to be famous and always be remembered performers were coming out with hit after hit, and with fierce competition from the likes of the Beatles, Beach Boys, Rolling Stones, The Four Seasons, etc., and all the "soul" greats - it wasn't always easy to get the airtime and attention a very good group such as this, deserved or hoped to get.

I give him credit- The band suffered as a result.
My father used to watch Jerry's kids when they bowled Junior leagues at Hollywood Bowl. Jerry would just drop them off out front and not come in. Their mom would come to pick them up. She would talk to my dad until they were done and ready to leave. He said she was a very nice lady. Always asking how they were doing and behaving themselves.
Good song of yesteryear that is still good to hear. I like the way he sang with real talent.
I read Gary was kinda hard on his vocal ability but to my ears he sounds great

His songs were mostly regular guy songs, not real trippy. So his voice worked well with them, I thought. Sounded like any guy singing them, not a vocal virtuoso. Fun, relatable, not too emo.

Gary Lewis apparently lives now in Boulder City, NV. (no casinos there!), and very rarely does someone convince him to put a group together and go out and perform his old songs! His Dad died a few years ago, and we miss him, but.. Gary and the Playboys had a BIG string of hits that should have him on stage everywhere for the next 10 years! After all, we still see Gary Puckett, Frankie Avalon, Peter Noone (Hermans Hermits), Tommy James and the Shondells, and all other 1960's rock n roll groups EVERY WEEK her in Las Vegas, how hard would it be to have Gary Lewis here somewhere every week?
Actually Gary does perform but perhaps not as often as he once did. I often see him on a bill with several other oldies acts. But hey...not every singer in their 70s is Mick Jagger. Maybe he's enjoying life and not wanting to be on the road all the time. He's 73, you know?

This was from sometime in 1965 or '66. Hullabaloo was on NBC at about the same time that Shindig was on ABC. The latter was in black & white, though.

I saw Gary Lewis and the Playboys in Harrisburg, Pa. maybe back in the late 1980's or early 1990's. They played all their hits, great show.
I saw them briefly when I was 10 in 1964 before they really took off. They played a performance for enlisted men at San Diego's Naval Training Center at Luce Auditorium. I had just come from a custom car show at Golden Hall where I had bought a chrome plastic German helmet (Hot Rod/Biker merch) that I wore 24/7. Some crusty old swab grabbed it off my head and stomped it to pieces on the auditorium floor yelled at me about how I was dishonoring thousands of fighting men that died for my country. I thought he was bat-shit crazy and that soon someone would put him in a straight jacket and cart him away. Instead, I got kicked out and nobody bothered to explain why my souvenir from the custom car show was like being draped in a confederate flag at the Apollo Theater.

Some people are saying that Jerry didn't support his Son's act but he had him in several movies, on the Telethon, here on Hullabaloo, and in other ways. According to Wikipedia he is still performing at 77.
RAEL - It's a fact that Jerry didn't support Gary's MUSIC career, despite early appearances. There's plenty of information out there on this... and also about Jerry *intentionally* not leaving any inheritance to his sons. Look it up. Jerry was an a**hole in real life.
@@60s70sVintageRock I did look it up and you're right....he specifically wrote in his will that he didn't want his previous kids to get anything. I can't imagine why he would do that. Sounds pretty bad....without knowing his relationship with his adult kids. Maybe they turned into reprehensible people against his wishes. Hard saying. But it also says that he supported Gary early on. He had parts in some of Jerry's movies. And on the Telethon and Hullabaloo and so forth. He got a lot of boost in the early days.
I was lucky to see them at a county fair in Indiana in the early 90s. They still sounded FANTASTIC! One of my favorite bands from the 60s.
I think these children are the stars of the show.
One night, I went dancing with some friends at this place, called the 'Saddleback Inn' I believe it was called. I don't really remember what kind of place it was. In southern California somewhere. Between dances, I wandered out into the lobby; it was a huge lobby. I was alone out in there, and all of a sudden, Gary comes walking over to me. A real sweet guy. I talked with him for a while, I don't really remember about what, I was so jazzed. I was an enormous fan of his music.
And of course I had to ask him about pop. It was a trip. I mean,

I barely remember seeing him when I was about 7 on The Ed Sullivan Show rerun one night. As a kid I always heard "Jerry Lewis and The Playboys"..hearing problem here too............only to find it was his son last week while watching vids here on YT. Man how I wish I could go back and be about 20 years old in 1960 and live in that magical decade. Thankful for the songs/videos that bring a tear to my eye in todays harsh world. Blessings! :)
