I’ve had one for nearly 11 years and it’s been the best car I’ve ever had. I’ve got a 2 litre diesel and done 212k miles in it. A few niggles have started to appear but it still does nearly 50mpg. People knock Citroen but mines been brilliant
It slays me that they dont sell Citroens in the States anymore. I think they're very unique and quirky, like a French Saab. If they tried to sell them now, they might actually be popular.
It's weird not being able to wind down rear windows, but on the other hand, since automatic A/C I don't wind my windows down except when taking parking ticket.
I love my sexy DS4 2l turbo diesel. You don't want to open the windows in summer in SA when it is 32 degrees outside. That is why it has split climate control. Chairs that heat up and massage you on a long drive, directional front lights, blind spot warning, parking sensors, parallel parking assist, bluetooth... and the list continues. Even the sound of the direction indicators can be customised. The kids are crazy about the jungle beat!
Dude, watch Mythbusters they did a pretty solid test about "windows down vs. air conditioning"...in the end they concluded that it's more fuel efficient to have the windows down during low speed travel (back roads and such) around 30-50 mph and air con on/windows up during highway speeds.
@IMB2U It's a coupe, with two extra doors for easier acsess to the back. What would you rather have, a coupe with two doors, so that you can not get in the back, or a coupe with extra two dors at the back, but without rolling down windows? It doesn't bother me at all, in these days there is AC in allmoast all cars as standard.
I agree the DS4 looks good, but its not as different looking to the C4 as the DS3 is to the C3.Also are Citroen deliberately making the "C" cars less good so people will spend more money and buy a "DS" car instead?
it is but trust me, the ride is stiff, suitable if your into sporty driving but very uncomfortable if you like a more comfortable ride youlll feel every bump and pothole if your unlucky enough to hit one in it. They paid a lot of attention to detail on design and cabin interior and forgot about suspension design. Hydractive III would have made an amazing difference if they had given it as an option
@TheAndrija93 Reliability issues with Citroen (and French cars in general) is history. If you check the newest ADAC ratings, which is a GERMAN society that tests cars, French cars are very reliable, in fact, they're among the most reliable in their segments.
Too bad. I was really liking this car until Mat pointed out that rear vision isn't so great, and that the back seats are not so comfortable. (To say nothing of the fact that the rear windows don't go down.)
Just ordered a DS4 Dsport 160 HDi in Pearlescent white. Was promised it this coming weekend, now a factory build with delivery due on 30/8/13. Gutted! Will just have to be patient I suppose.
i test drove 1.6 d ,but found even when seat is at its lowest still a bit high , iam 5' 11" either that the accelerator pedal is a wrong angle/ too close
I have the Australian 2007 Mazda 3 SP23 and after i pay a bit more off my loan im considering either getting the Mazda 3 SP25 or the Mazda CX7 SUV and selling my Mazda 3 but this DS4 also draws my attention so im wondering i like premium cars with a little bit of grunt while balancing perfectly with fuel economy and uniquely different designs while maintaining a low price does anyone have any suggestions?
@yamenkharsa I don't know what window lock doesn't work, (maybe a french one that's probably broken) Of course they work with kids as the lock button is for the driver only. Also, opening the rear windows with the front ones reduce butting in the cabin.
@TravvyG be careful French cars in Australia used not to have a very good resale value, and an limited dealer network even though they are good... maybe the situation has changed now?
Sorry but Citroen have seriously pulled out their finger and done something seriously sweet! Some epic styling going on. My mates laughed at me when I bought my Renault Clio as my first car! Saying omg it's French......I think people need to realise that German cars aren't all that. The times are changing, just bought myself a kia pro_ceed got the exact same attitude, but I wouldn't swap it. Lesson? Times change! Old stereotypes are exactly that, stereotypes.
@jll2904 Because this is a drivers car. It drives extremely well. DS line is not only about comfort, its about sport and luxury. And by the way, this car is FAR FAR FAR from uncomfortable. Its suspension is hard, but its still more comfortable than Audi A3, Golf, Giulietta, BMW 1...
Oh, c'mon Mat, these negatives are just ...a bit wrong! I mean you should compare it with Qashqai, not Scirocco 'cos they're not in one class, and this has more space in the back than Qash!? OK, it's not personal, your reviews are still cool and I like this styling so much I don't care about else about this car :)
@thecleaner81 Yeah but if your gonna make it a five dour it really doesn't make sense to not have the windows winding down. They may aswell have just made it a three door for what it's worth
@MegaElisha french cars - style with compromises, wouldn't really happen on a german car - many find them a bit boring .. i like them just for this kind of reasons, that being said - the ds5 tho looks just epic compared to anything the germans can throw at it
It`s just you. Now that`s the problem with you people. You probably know say Audi very well but it`s not so with Citroen (underrated in many countries in my opinion). I`d say Audi copied dashboards from Citroens of the 90s. Take a look at now previous generation A6 2005 to 2011) and compare it with Xantia`s dash or facelifted XM`s dash and you`ll see what I`m talking about. By the way the DS4 wants to be a coupe (which tend to have only 3 doors (can`t open the rear windows) treat DS4 as such.
@enemay There is a difference between taking ques and blatantly copying one another. I 've heard the veloster design argument before and I must inform you that the concept vehicle looks very different than the actual one, in which the looks where obviously "inspired" by Citroen GT which began back in 2003. All other Hyundai models look an awful lot like Peugeot too. It's nearly unlikely for the french marquees to copy hyndai because they are mainly targeting the Germans with their designs.
@ExAnimoPortugal the first Ford Focus for example was revolutionary in design, but still imo looks good today ! But then the new one does nothing for me.
louis smeets everyone has different tastes, if i had th emone to buy a premium bmw, merc, audi.. i would without thiking twice buy this car, i just love it, everyone in the wrold could hate it, but what matters is my opinion , color brown and those black 19 inch wheels mhmmm :)
@mballzhari As for VW, I'm not defending them because what you do say about their reliability is true. It's crap, but it's not actually things falling off which is why I think people percive it as being reliable. As for a general rule, the european competition (when new) is more refined then the Japanese counterparts. Porsches aren't very unreliable and Volvos (other than the XC90 T6 and first gen S80) will easily last you 250K miles. And what person is going to spend under 30K on a BMW?
That wastes fuel if you have the windows down. I never have the windows down. It increases drag and it is noisy. that's why you should use the conditioning in the cabin. some people live in the past still. come on people wake up. This is the future...
@lakeb0dom Actually any car company takes ques from one another,I always find it funny people complain about it.my initial thoughts where Hyundai copied the DS4 design for the Veloster, but looking at the history of the Veloster concept which came out about 6 years ago, its unlikely; but who knows maybe they both hired the same design firm, Hyundai often hires European designers. Also its not just the looks of the cars that are similar the wheel base is pretty close too and other dimensions.
Omg the rear window is horrible. And the visibility too. Great car if it wouldn't be for those two really important things. Oh well I just stick around with my BX for now :)
@KingBre99 they are not the kind of cars that would appeal to Americans, even though GM has just bought a share in Peugeot/Citroen; maybe you will see them as a Chevrolet?
I’ve had one for nearly 11 years and it’s been the best car I’ve ever had. I’ve got a 2 litre diesel and done 212k miles in it. A few niggles have started to appear but it still does nearly 50mpg. People knock Citroen but mines been brilliant
You forgot to mention that the driver seat has an inbuilt massage function :)
+Kristián Kopáčik You must be vey tall if you have to open the rear window to catch a parking ticket :)
hahahahha!
10 years later I'm thinking to buy this.. how's the reliability
its designed as a coupe a coupe doesnt have rear windows that go down
Dude, watch Mythbusters they did a pretty solid test about "windows down vs. air conditioning"...in the end they concluded that it's more fuel efficient to have the windows down during low speed travel (back roads and such) around 30-50 mph and air con on/windows up during highway speeds.
isnt that common knowledge?
Mine arrives on Monday... very excited!
the engine on the 2011-present Citroen DS4
Engine
1.6 L I4 VTi
1.6 L I4 THP (155 or 200 hp)
1.6 L I4 HDi and e-HDI
2.0 L I4 HDi
@IMB2U It's a coupe, with two extra doors for easier acsess to the back. What would you rather have, a coupe with two doors, so that you can not get in the back, or a coupe with extra two dors at the back, but without rolling down windows? It doesn't bother me at all, in these days there is AC in allmoast all cars as standard.
Damn, he looks a lot younger in this video compared to now (2021)
yeah, i thought he'd look exactly the same for 10 years...
I agree the DS4 looks good, but its not as different looking to the C4 as the DS3 is to the C3.Also are Citroen deliberately making the "C" cars less good so people will spend more money and buy a "DS" car instead?
I have a ds4 2.0 l 163hp and i like this car i had the choice between a low finition golf or the best finition ds4 so i piked up the ds4
Yamin Baka how does it compare in size to the qashqai
Got mine tuesday may only be the dsign but still cool though
it is but trust me, the ride is stiff, suitable if your into sporty driving but very uncomfortable if you like a more comfortable ride youlll feel every bump and pothole if your unlucky enough to hit one in it. They paid a lot of attention to detail on design and cabin interior and forgot about suspension design. Hydractive III would have made an amazing difference if they had given it as an option
What was that whistling sound that it was making on the outside shots?
@TheAndrija93 Reliability issues with Citroen (and French cars in general) is history. If you check the newest ADAC ratings, which is a GERMAN society that tests cars, French cars are very reliable, in fact, they're among the most reliable in their segments.
Did you record this video by using İron machine.
what is your problem with big bottles Mat?
the 2011-present Citroen DS5 is assembled in
Poissy, France
Too bad. I was really liking this car until Mat pointed out that rear vision isn't so great, and that the back seats are not so comfortable. (To say nothing of the fact that the rear windows don't go down.)
why is the ride height soooo high? You can hide a couple of people between the wheels and arches!!
Apparently they don't wind down in any of the 3 door models.
Why do i need to wind down a window when the AC is always on. I don't understand why people are so against this.
ordered mine 2 weeks in Babylon red, i suppose to get next week! i'm so excited... :-)~
Did u get it?
Why would he show the storage spaces but skip the electric parking brake??
Citroen are making some classy cars
Just ordered a DS4 Dsport 160 HDi in Pearlescent white. Was promised it this coming weekend, now a factory build with delivery due on 30/8/13. Gutted! Will just have to be patient I suppose.
And? Still have the car?
Have tried other 3 door models?
is the steering wheel off centre? ;)
Was thinking of getting one of these. Just been massively put off
The reason why the rear windows dont wind down is because of how the glass is shaped
i test drove 1.6 d ,but found even when seat is at its lowest still a bit high , iam 5' 11" either that the accelerator pedal is a wrong angle/ too close
Why the hell can't you wind down the rear windows?
Excellent Review. I can't believe you can't wind the back windows down.
Sorry but , " theres no roam in the back? and rear windows doesnt work?" aren't all coupes like that? where are you at?
i.am.michelangelo it’s room not roam
@yamenkharsa I don't know what window lock doesn't work, (maybe a french one that's probably broken) Of course they work with kids as the lock button is for the driver only. Also, opening the rear windows with the front ones reduce butting in the cabin.
@TravvyG be careful French cars in Australia used not to have a very good resale value, and an limited dealer network even though they are good... maybe the situation has changed now?
how can you compare DS4 to Scirocco?!?!?!
what about ds5 carbuyer
Rear window doesn't win down?............
Im getting mine on tuesday but its only the dsign model though
I love this car!
how do you turn the radio on
you press the on button
Sorry but Citroen have seriously pulled out their finger and done something seriously sweet! Some epic styling going on. My mates laughed at me when I bought my Renault Clio as my first car! Saying omg it's French......I think people need to realise that German cars aren't all that. The times are changing, just bought myself a kia pro_ceed got the exact same attitude, but I wouldn't swap it.
Lesson? Times change! Old stereotypes are exactly that, stereotypes.
@ExAnimoPortugal I am talking about looks as a part of design, as far as other aspects of the MK1 Focus, nothing out of the ordinary?
But the rear windows don't wind down!!!! WTF???
Why dont they have this in the U.S
lol, matt look so young here! Sincerely, Carwow subscriber
Make a review of Citroen C5
i bought that car Today :D cant wait to get it in a few weeks :D
@jll2904 Because this is a drivers car. It drives extremely well. DS line is not only about comfort, its about sport and luxury. And by the way, this car is FAR FAR FAR from uncomfortable. Its suspension is hard, but its still more comfortable than Audi A3, Golf, Giulietta, BMW 1...
can u do a review on the DS5 it is beautiful
Beautiful DS4
@SypherDubstep OK, sorry for that! yes, I already saw A1 as well and it is quite good looking compare to pics, sadly not in dark
@samados969 I'm glad it has opening doors! I just think it's stupid the back door windows can't be opened.
I saw this for sale at a dealer but now youve reviewed it. It's sort of changed my mind 😅 not really a family friendly car indeed...
is it just me , or does the dash look rather, audi-esque?
@thecleaner81 Yeah but if your gonna make it a five dour it really doesn't make sense to not have the windows winding down. They may aswell have just made it a three door for what it's worth
Why do you call car seats chairs? They are seats!
Not sure if calling seats chairs are the norm in the UK... Sometimes in recent Mat Watson review i can hear him saying either chairs or seats lol
@MegaElisha french cars - style with compromises, wouldn't really happen on a german car - many find them a bit boring .. i like them just for this kind of reasons, that being said - the ds5 tho looks just epic compared to anything the germans can throw at it
this isnt a coupe though
Probrably because of the shape they are
0:10 is it just me or does this look a lot like the Hyundai Veloster? Who came out first? who's copying who?
That rear window wiper looks funny. :D
thanks for sharing mat! the DS4 looks good.. but the windows not winding down are bizzare! and the DS logo looks awkward lol
I bet the sales of this car would be much more if the back windows could wind down... My dad was considering buying this motor until he found out
It`s just you.
Now that`s the problem with you people. You probably know say Audi very well but it`s not so with Citroen (underrated in many countries in my opinion). @lffit But the Ford Focus had a good all round design, do not mix that up with looks... I am a design student :D
DS5 is AMAZING!!!
i wish we had this in the states i love the looks! very sexy except the steering wheel
@ExAnimoPortugal the first Ford Focus for example was revolutionary in design, but still imo looks good today !
But then the new one does nothing for me.
@lffit Always have... The problem is, they are too fashionable and what is fashionable always goes out of fashion...
Great car...and so beautiful !!!
I liked it, but the vision and the rear windows are a no go for me
if you down the front windows theres enought air ventilation for the back
newmabreu96 I would still feel claustrophobic if I were in the back seats..... not gonna put anyone through that lol
louis smeets this is my drea car, if i had to cary any small cousins i didnt had to yell ,"put the windows down, who forgot it to close" lol
lol true that, in terms of looks I like it 2nd best (after Mercedes A-Class) but the windows just have to open, it´s just a handicap to me
louis smeets everyone has different tastes, if i had th emone to buy a premium bmw, merc, audi.. i would without thiking twice buy this car, i just love it, everyone in the wrold could hate it, but what matters is my opinion , color brown and those black 19 inch wheels mhmmm :)
@enemay No need to think too hard, hyundai copies french cars even on their cars targeted at the US market..
but the point is that it is not a coupe! it has 5 doors, that is why everyone moans about rear windows.
holy crap theres like a full keyboard in the steering wheel
@mballzhari As for VW, I'm not defending them because what you do say about their reliability is true. great car.
@lffit
GM bought 7% (only) of PSA & the Peugeot's family have 28%, the boss rest again the Peugeot Family and by far
@ds4 if you live in europe releacs until summer this is just a prosition.
That's a bummer. Thanks.
0:30 easy with the door dude!
Windows in the back will not roll down what the hell and getting in and out of the back is a joke as well
If one day i bay this car, i have to improve new lower springs... :D
Buy the new C5 then.:)
And we used to own a BX so I know what you mean. It was a remarkable car! I miss it :(
Its a 4door
the interior looks a bit like the Peugeot 3008
dig this review.
@kaande35
Well said. Whatever it is you're saying.
@SypherDubstep Oh, don't be silly - this is BY MILES better looking!!!
