On this day in 1848, the California gold rush began. While gold in the region was first discovered in January 1848, it wasn’t until December that US president James Polk made a statement confirming the vast quantities of gold being discovered in the newly acquired territory. While the nonnative population of California stood at just over 20k in 1848, over 300k people flocked to the Golden State in the three years following.
