Amish people learning about trains in 2020...

    • @pennypay1
      @pennypay1 3 ปีที่แล้ว +82

Amish never wear patterned-print clothing, not even in the more permissive Orders. I'm almost positive those were Mennonites or some fundamentalist splinter group. But it's true that the high speed of the passenger train (compared to them likely assuming a passenger train isn't much faster than most freight trains) threw them off. They probably weren't aware that walking on tracks is trespassing and punishable.

@@pennypay1 That wasn't a passenger train, it was an intermodal train with well cars carrying merchandise containers. And they run those things FAST when they can. Several years ago, in the 90's, there was a deaf man walking along the T&P(UP) track in Jefferson, TX that was struck by a train after he stepped onto the tracks as the train got to him. The train came upon him from his back and the crew blew the horn for the crossing then for him but he did not hear the train. The speed limit there was only 35 mph because of a 10 degree curve.
Here in Arp, TX a member of the school board crossed the UP track about 100 feet from a crossing and right in front of a pair of locos running light and got hit after emerging from between two large bushes. He did not have his hearing aides on. His body was propelled about 150 feet.

Keep your eyes & ears open at all times when near the tracks. I didnt think anything about it, because even if a train did come, the brodge over the gulley was old and rickety, and the trains took 10 minutes, maybe more, from sighting to crossing.
But I won't try to justify it. It was wrong, and I know that now. But a fast line like this, especially the volume, can be very, very unpredictable. Never risk it.

i live in the uk and here the trains have a high pitch sound for atleast 30 seconds before they come, diesel or electic. most of the time, it all depends on the weather and ambient noise as sometimes you will hear them for around 3 seconds and they come right past

What is even more amazing is people who survive a near-death experience, but it doesn't teach them anything. They repeat it all over again sometime down the road, but the next time, they don't come out so lucky.

As a volunteer firefighter in a county with a lot of active train tracks (the county seat is a major railroad hub for CSX, NS, and quite a few short lines), pedestrian vs. train calls are among the WORST for a variety of reasons!

    Stop, Look, Listen and Live
A moving train does not forgive
Think twice before crossing that gate
A second later and it's too late
Once you ride onto that track
It's a one way trip from which you won't come back
When tons of steel meet human flesh
Steel will win, no need to guess
It's against the law and common sense
Don't ever cross a gate or fence
Wait right there it won't be that long
Take a chance and you'll be forever gone
It's a game that you cannot win
Few have lived to ever try it again
So listen up and play by the rules
Taking risks is a game for fools
Look both ways and stay alive
There may be others in the car you drive
When you hear a train that's passing through
Remember they've got a right to live, too
So Stop, Look, Listen and Live
A moving train does not forgive
Take it slow, don't be in a rush
Or your dreams and more that train will crush

I have a 7 year old. I just made him watch this and talked to him about this . I asked him what do you think would have happened if they fell, or hurt themselves where they could not get off the tracks in time. He told me "they would die and not be able to see their family anymore. Also told him it's trespassing and against the law.
