I owned one in 1976, green and black, and took it all over. It was powerful and smooth. I came back from a plane trip and drove it to meet some friends and came home jet lag tired. I forgot to lock the forks and came out later that night and it was gone. Still stings. I replaced it several months later with the 750. But, to be honest, I think I liked the 450 better.
That was my first street motorcycle when I was 16yo and got my motorcycle learner's permit; a 1970 Honda CL450 K3 in red (they were blue as well). This was a real nice bike for a high school kid. "Get your motor runnin'. Head out on the highway! Looking for adventure and whatever comes our way... Born to be wiiiild..." I was so much cooler back then. The CB 450 in this video is a 1971 I believe. The CB 450 had the front disc brake since 1970; nice. The Honda 450 was an important motorcycle. It was Honda's first "big bike" and the first Japanese 4 stroke motorcycle that could run with the British 650 twins of the day. The Honda 450 handled down a twisty road MUCH better than the CB 750 IMO.
seeing all these clean old motorcycles has inspired me to tear down my 1983 XL600R to the frame and completely restore it, I want those clean bottom rails. you're spreading your madness
I had that same bike in my early twenties. Loved it. But you know, we all have those vehicles that we regret selling. Now I'm hoping to find another one.
I bought a 1971 CB450 in 1972 with 5000 miles, with gold tank but black stripe. Later, I picked up a Triumph Daytona 500. The Triumph was the end of a long evolution and the Honda was the future. On backroads, the Triumph was fun, for long miles the Honda ruled. A real time machine, the bike and the Museum. 👍
The Kaplan mic throw is a part of Americana now! This reminds me of my CB 400 Super Sport. 1977 it was red. Bought it from my neighbor Joe for 300 bucks back around 1990. Loved it!
Candy garnet brown. IMO, the best color ever on a motorcycle. My '71 750 Four was the same. Beautiful, but when they start to fade, a greenish tint appears.
I had a 550 four in candy gold and black. It had a header and it was indestructible!! Even in the dead of a Chicago winter it would start right up! This was back 1990 or so.
Sasquatch sure knows how to treat a motorcycle, notice he doesn't over rev it or Beat It. He never even jams it full throttle and make it struggle under load, he knows how to treat a classic vintage machine.... he is Captain America!#! standing up for all !#! the fat, the short, and the tall
Very few people know that these (the 450's) don't have valve springs, per sei. They have torsion springs that open and close the valves. When I was 15, I thought that was bizarre...haha, at 65 I still do 🙂
@@larrynorsworthy8582 not even close (most) Ducati's have a Desmodromic valve system. They are mechanically opened and closed. This puppy has a twisting shaft to operate the valves
Hi Ken that 450 is one cool find! I loved those bikes! As being an old Honda Tech i have worked on quite a few of those! Those motors were unique with the double overhead cam and a torshion bar valve spring set up instead of a coil spring and they could still turn 10,000 rpm with no problem! Cool old bikes! Nice find!
had a 72 cb 450 i bought new in 73 same color rode it 6000 the first year. second year it went to aspen Colorado from detroit and back. camped on top of aspen mountain 11200 feet did that for a week up and down the lift access trail.. beat the snot out of the bike. it took it. 80 out and back on I 80. great bike
O love the old Honda twins! They looked and sounded awesome! My dad had a '67 450 he made a "chopper" out of. I don't personally remember it, but my dad told me about all the good times he had on it before it got stolen in 1972 (right after I was born). It was last seen in an apartment complex in Orono Maine. Awesome as always Ken! Thank you for keeping these machines alive.
Those Candy Garnet Brown CB tanks always faded on the top and ended up with a green tint for some reason. Same with the tops of the plastic side covers and headlight. Maybe an oxidation of the metallic element in the paint? Have had a CB750K1 since new that came with that color. It became quite "green" as it aged even though it was mostly kept indoors. When we repainted it 20 years ago we did it in another Honda OEM color, Planet Blue Metallic. New blue K1s were extremely rare in the US. I was told by a former Honda USA sales manager from that K1 era that they would order them but most of the blue ones ended up in the UK, Germany and France. What usually ruined the paint on most of those bikes was brake fluid from the master cylinder. Finding an original undamaged one is a real treasure. Almost an impossible rarity.
Planet blue metallic was a K2 paint. On K1 there was "polynesian blue metallic" EG ref on the parts list ;-) which was the same CB 450 K4 blue paint (same year as 750 K1, 1971) cheers
When you said it's 50 years old I about crapped my pants. I owned one I bought new....50 years ago....OMG where did the time go? It was an awesome bike. Especially compared to my prior bike, a 71 Kawi 500. Thanks for the memories!
In 1982 I bought this year/model for $250.00 put 10,000 miles on it untill it was stolen,3 months later the police brought it back to my house after finding the bike under water in a irrigation canal in PHX. I drained the tank and engine, ckeabed the carbs, out new plugs and points and rode if fod 2 more years...."BULLET-PROOF"
I seem to recall that a gripe against this bike was that the throttle was grabby: sticks then grabs hard. Any comment? To me, short of the DOHC 750s of 1981, this was the best-looking bike Honda (or anyone) ever made. Thanks for this video!
I have one of these currently and I’ve had several others over the years - the rear turn signals on this bike are not in the original configuration. The standoffs appear to have either been shortened or deleted completely. Nice bike though.
four stroke Friday is here.......I led the cops on a high speed chase on a CB 350...........took it down a trail at the end of a dead end road.......went through the woods and came out on the highway on the other side..........those sumbitches couldn't close an umbrella!
I had this bike! Same color, I put over 9000 miles on it before going into the Army in September 73. Loved this bike!
Had a CB 450 back in early 70's....had the old "hump back" gas tank but I love that bike and was amazed at the torsion bar valve springs!

In the 70's, I had a 1970 CL450 in red. ( Scrambler ) As senior would say, " Typical Honda reliability, fit, & finish. "

That is so beautiful ! my first road bike at 16 was a 1982 CB250N , then a few years later i bought my fathers 1976 CB750
Takes me back to when I was a junior in HS. 45 yrs ago.
seeing all these clean old motorcycles has inspired me to tear down my 1983 XL600R to the frame and completely restore it, I want those clean bottom rails. you're spreading your madness
Fantastic bikes. Everything you need and nothing you don't.
I had that same bike in my early twenties. Loved it. But you know, we all have those vehicles that we regret selling. Now I'm hoping to find another one.
My first full size motorcycle. Owned two over the years I liked them so much.
1:36 Kap America thinking "WTF ,CAN YA NOT SEE I'M RECORDING HERE ,HEY! I'M RECORDING HERE" forget about it 🤣😎🙏🇬🇧❤🇺🇸

The valves don’t use traditional valve springs to get every RPM out of the engine. The valves have TORSION BARS for springs. Very cool.
Wow, such a beauty, Ken! Pristine condition! Gorgeous!

My first bike was a 1971 CL450 Scrambler. Pipes up the side and a 2.4 gallon tank. In 1975, rode it from SD to LA to TX and back to SD.

I rode mine all over cape cod for many summers. It is a perfect motorcycle.

My very first bike was the Honda CB450 just like yours color and all. Mine was a 1971 year. One running bike.

They'll run with a 650 British Twin all day long, and not require hardly any maintenance!!! Love to own it and the 500 Four!!!
Ronnie’s getting it altogether.. I just wana see him on his new bike
I have my dads all original 1970 1/2 cb450 in teal metallic. I’ve almost completed all restoration.
Wow. What a wonderful bike.
This looks fun to ride and convenient I might get one for summer
absolutely a dime piece!
“We’re drowning in gas gas 500’s! Please! Please! Help!”
Hell no they are all sold. 1 year wait for 1 now!
Damn. That was my exact bike in 1972. And my last name is Kaplan.

"grabby"? It was surprisingly torquey for a 450cc. I never remember any throttle problems(I had a new 72 450). Maybe lube that throttle cable?

nice and clean a great machine
Cherry Bike. Would be fun to ride around town, on small errands.
your killing me with all these old bikes...lol.
SHUT UP AND TAKE MY MONEY!!!
I scrolled by 12 videos and clicked on this one.👍

😅 patina sounds so much better than corrosion.
Will this be comfortable to cruise at 60mph?
I had the cb350, it could do awesome wheelies
Unbelievable
How much did it sell for?
Is it worth buying a restored cb450, theyre asking 3200 for it. No title. And for a first and daily ride.
Who the hell wants a Brown bike. I had the Orange one.
What kind of bike(s) do you personally own and love riding the most Kaplan?
He ride expensive Harleys and cr 500s , he has xr250 klr 650 that aren't worth much on the used market, he used to ride a yz450f
What is the red line rpm?
How can I contact you?
