Samsung Refrigerator Not Cooling in Fresh Food Cabinet - How to Fix with a Second Heater

  • It seems like that, eventually, your Samsung Refrigerator won't cool in the upper cabinet, or the Samsung refrigerator starts leaking water inside the cabinet. Or you'll even experience the dreaded Samsung refrigerator fan noise problem. All of these issues (and maybe another one or two) are all due to one problem: Your refrigerator has ice and frost build-up behind the upper evaporator panel.
    I made one video dealing with this problem, but the heater installation used a different type of splicing type that works great, but is a bit more difficult to work with (in my opinion!). This installation is quicker and easier.

    Writing this 2.5 weeks post-fix using Ben's kit from this excellent video. We had the giant ice ball on the fan, ice coming out of the holes in the panel, and very little cooling in the fridge. Previously tried just replacing the drain clip as some videos suggest, but that didn't work. After this fix, there is no new ice in the fridge that I can see and it is noticeably cooler now. Very happy with how well this seems to have worked (though I'm almost afraid to jinx it by writing this!). Thanks, Ben, for your detailed video and putting together this repair kit.

    I have spent more time than I wish to calculate on researching fixes, taking apart and defrosting and more, all for the problem of the icing up on this Samsung fridge. Love the style of my fridge but hated this aspect which started about 4 years after purchasing - its now 7 years old. Had hit the wall and told my husband, no more! I will try one more thing and then it’s gone. Thankfully, the “one more thing” was Ben’s secondary heater unit. I ordered it and installed (so thankful for the great video that walks you through installation step by step) and have waited a few weeks to report. SUCCESS so far!!! I’m delighted with the ingenuity of Ben - seeing a recurring problem and then creating a fix, I’m delighted with how easy it was to purchase and how quickly Ben responded to questions, and I’m delighted that it was easy to install. Thank you Ben! You’re amazing. I am from Canada and did end up having to pay duty charges through UPS which was substantial. I found it odd since I’ve received tons of things from the US before with no duty incurred, but figured it was worth it. It was! Would not hesitate to purchase again from Ben.

    I watched your other video and it did seem a bit complicated but I intend to order this kit and give it a try. I know Samsung techs probably don't offer a permanent fix for this issue like you have and it's worth spending a little money on this fix rather than $1700 on a new fridge. I appreciate you helping us poor folks who have been saddled with these fridges!
    Edit: I bought Ben's kit and installed the foil backing to the drip pan and behind the evaporator coils as well as the second heater. It's only been a month, but my fridge is cooling as it should (and I hear not ice contacting the fan blades) and the ice maker is also not melting/freezing anymore as a result of that warmer air entering the ice maker. This is a solution to multiple interconnected problems with this fridge and hopefully is a permanent fix. I like this fridge a lot, but I like it a lot better when it works as intended.

    Thanks Ben! Was a pain in the arse taking the panel off. There was so much ice behind it, it was frozen in spots to the coil. I set my heat gun on a pot set on 350° with the doors partially closed. It still took me hours to melt the ice. I didn't want to have to replace the panel. It's been 8 hours and looks good so far. Temp is holding at 40°. Been a week ish and all is well. You saved me hundreds! Wish I could buy you a beer.

    Just installed my kit today. Pretty easy. I used a food thermometer to check that the heater was working. Put fridge in forced defrost (RF261 by Holding Power Freeze and Fridge Button 8 seconds, then 4 button presses to FD, to reset just unplug fridge). I put a food thermometer between the new heater and metal tubing, went to forced defrost and watched my thermometer rise in temperature after about 45 seconds. Good sanity check to ensure install was good. Thanks Ben!

    Update: Kit recieved. Installed, everything worked as expected (BUT). Evap coil was cooling (infrared gun = 25F). Grey cord was heating with rd on @ 90+ before I turned it off). Put everything back together slept like a baby. Next morning, top cabinet is at 50F (uh oh). Pulled everything back apart. Figured out that the grey cord or one of the little zip tie ends?) was keeping the fan from turning at all. Shifted the grey cord and zip ties a little bit, put together and we're back at 35F within 2 hours. In case anyone runs into this, make sure the fan can turn freely when u put it back together (it's very difficult to confirm Given there's no way to tell.. besides the cabinet not able to fully cool).

    Hi Ben, thank you so much for generously sharing your expertise. Do you think I can use this on Samsung RB215LASH/XAA as the main defroster instead of replacing the whole evaporator coil/heater? My whole evaporator coil gets iced up in about a week after complete defrost which I am doing every week manually. The thermistor and defrost fuse are both checked fine on multimeter, but when I run forced defrost, I could not feel the coil getting warm at all. I was worried that replacing the whole coil/heater would be too expensive and too hard to do myself, so this seemed like a heaven-sent.

Also, in your previous video, you recommended an off the shelf (sunco) silicone heater and it sounds like the one you sell now is custom made and a better option. FYI -- the link for the kit is above -- just click on SHOW MORE. I installed the kit this weekend on a Fridge very similar to what was in the video. Referenced the earlier video -- Samsung Icing/Leaking problem -- to do the procedure and just saw this one. Simpler and easier if you are only doing the secondary heater. In my case I needed to also do the Samsung drain heater as well so bought that kit. Here are some tips based on my experience:
    1. Drawers/Shelves out -- some are a big pain, worth to research videos just on that. The side with the ice maker is difficult as each shelf seems to have a different method for pulling it out.
    2. Removing the shelf above the water filter. Need to get a small flat blade screwdriver INTO the LEFT side tab (the plastic tab you can see on the shelf itself does nothing) and push in, this releases the shelf from the water filter housing. Take your time as you do not want to break any plastic.
    3. Program Mode -- Took a couple tries to get it to work. Not sure why -- fingers not in the exact place or pushing at the exact time? You know it works if you hear the BEEP and then when you push only on the LIGHT button (middle button on right side) the codes show up. If you get the standard screen of the temperatures, you need to try again.
    4. rd or fd mode -- in this mode, the fridge with BEEP non stop for about 30 minutes. I had so much ice I had to redo this mode 4 times so I could remove the panel. I had ice coming out of the vent slots and when I finally got the panel open (being very gentle to not force it!) the ball of ice was more like a WALL of ice -- 4x the size! Wow! I was too impatient to just let the fridge defrost on its own. Carefully removed all the ice and cleaned the fridge before installing the two kits.
    5.Watch this and the other video at least 2x before doing the job and then keep it running when you are actually doing the job, take notes. I also did the same thing with the Posi-connectors! If I had only seen this video sooner.
    6. Secondary heater wire -- mine was not as long as in this video, but it was sufficient to go over all the copper line. You want to go over all the lines.
    7. Temperature Probe (yellow wire on right with White end) -- I did not replace, but as suggested moved it further to the right. Will see if there is an issue down the road and if I needed to secure it more.
    8. Test your work -- after the install, I let the fridge get cold -- just a few minutes is enough and then went into rd mode. Use a temperature gauge of any style to check, not your fingers!
    9. Put everything back in the reverse order.
    After the install, I started up the fridge and in just an hour or two it was running perfectly! It has been only 24 hours, and no issues so far.
    Thank you Ben for the videos and the kit.

      Update: installation was easy (after all I've had the back panel off many times before to defrost it). It's been about a month and the refrigerator is running cold, there is no fan noise (from when it used to hit the built up ice) and no ice/frost is coming out of the vents as it normally would after only a few days. I still sometimes get water under the crisper drawers but I can live with that and just wipe it up. I've had the back cover off so many times that maybe I damaged it and that's causing some water to miss the drain during defrost. So far, I consider this a great success. 👍
      Oh, I should also add it is worth buying the defrost sensor too. The resistance on the one in my fridge was way out of spec (100k ohms) whereas the new one was right where it is supposed to be (5k ohms).

      They may vary, but I am fairly certain its the first button (furthest left) and middle on the right side - its the same alignment as on the ones w/ the front-interface, basically. And once you get into forced mode, you cycle through the options EXACTLY like the one shown until you get to the RD mode.

    Hi Ben. I bought the TH-camKIT and made the installation according to your videos. When you show the Drain fix that Samsung supplies the metallic sticky pad is much wider than the one in your kit which gave me pause. Also you supply a roll of wide silver paper which you never show in your videos. I did not use it. I think the KIT would be 100% better if it came with basic instructions.

And my second question is when you connect everything (the new secondary defrosting kit) and put it back to normal (after you force defrost it) will the kit turn on when ever to defrost itself or you’ll have to manually force defrost in order for the ice to melt?

    Excellent video and mod to the fridge. A quick question, my freezer isn't freezing the items but the upper compartment is fine. I checked the condenser coil in the freezer and its not frosted and there isn't any ice buildup. What could be the issue?correct me if I am wrong, but I didn't think it was the compressor, relay or any gas leakage because if this were the case, the top compartment wouldn't be working. A little help from you regarding this issue shall be appreciated. Thanks!! :)

    • @bensappliancesandjunk
      @bensappliancesandjunk  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The Samsung refrigerator has a 3-way switching valve to run the compressor to each cabinet independently with the same refrigerant. If there's an issue with the compressor, refrigerant level, or the condenser coils are really dirty behind the unit, it can result in an inefficient transmission of the heat exchange. This inefficiency could cause the unit not to freeze in the freezer (those coils get -20*F) while the refrigerator cabinet coils could still get 25-30*F which may be sufficient to cool the top fine, still.
      No frost buildup in freezer on evap coils is alarming. There should be SOME frost on them as it gets cold and freezes moisture onto the coils. I'd again, check the things I mentioned such as impacted dirt, condenser fan, ect.

    Hey Ben. I really appreciate the help here. Great video. Question. The fan that is in the panel that covers the evaporator coil, should this fan turn on right away once power is restored and the cooling starts? After fixing the freezing/drain issue, I tested it out for about 30 minutes and the fan didn’t come on once. I wonder if due to the ice build up, the fan motor has gone bad. Any way to test to see if this is the case? If it is bad, do you have a recommendation to a motor to replace it? Thank you.

    • @bensappliancesandjunk
      @bensappliancesandjunk  3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      The fan requires the doors on the fridge to be closed in order for it to activate. If you have the doors open trying to visually see it run, it never will. Trick the doors by using magnets over the top reed switches. Lights should turn off in fridge, and fan will turn back on.
      If the fan goes bad, just find your model's # and use my Appliance Parts Pros link in description to get the replacement OEM fan w/ warranty.

    Hi Ben. I have the touchscreen version of this. Really, the only 'problem' I've experienced with my 2017 unit is the very annoying need to manually (not using any features) defrost the icemaker. I discovered today, an engineering mode from the touch screen which allows one to use one of three defrost routines. I can then look at status to see which routine is running. I have an inaccessible bar of ice on the very top of the maker. I typically waste over an hour massaging a heat gun with a narrow 1 inch tip around the gaps in the area. This is beyond annoying. Dare I compare it to any icemaker in any refrigerator made in the 90's. Any aux heater ideas for the weak and flawed icemaker? Also, what is the purpose of replacing the drain tubes? Is it that they leak at sealing points or get blocked? Thanks for the video!

    • @bensappliancesandjunk
      @bensappliancesandjunk  3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      You need to look at the Samsung Icemaker repair kit/rebuild kit that Samsung offers to customers. Its extremely expensive, but solves most of the issue. I am working on a solution to sell on a cheaper kit ($20-40) but its still at the manufacturer.
      Re: drain tubes - Samsung went cheap on the original OEM tubes... They're generally not well built, so the suggestion from Samsung is to shell out the extra money for the new 5-piece remanufactured versions. You can clean the old ones and you probably will be OK, but having created CAD renderings of the replaced ones to look at buying in bulk, I can tell you the replacement ones are much more intricate and better. The original ones from 2009-2014 were a 2-piece design, and the newest ones are a 3 or 4-piece design... The new ones' have a pretty crappy area for water to drop into the drain pan (looks very prone to getting clogged) and the older ones are just real shoddy. The expensive replacement ones w/ the drain kits are at least nicer but again, you may choose to avoid it by cleaning it.

      Check the copper line to see how long it is. The kit right now is pretty long, and on some models, it looks like an "L" that is rather short. It'll work FOR SURE but you'll need to maybe even triple-stack the heater. I am working on getting shorter ones that are more universal - more heat, less length, but not too much heat for sure.
