Roger, I wish you and the followers loads of success with these temperamental plants. I've been very fortunate at keeping mine alive for over 10 years. I have 6 separate psychopsis now, 3 from original plant and 3 additional purchases. They all live in the same SW-facing bathroom window a few feet above the radiator and away from the A/C vent. The glass is opaque for "privacy" rather than totally clear. The largest plant (14" span) recently had the flower stem die after 5 successive blooms, but also is putting on 2 new pseudobulbs. A mid-sized plant has a new 22" stem with bud developing. I guess my random placement made me lucky after reading of many failures. Substrate is shallow with coir/sphagnum/rough charcoal and a little bark mix. Most roots are in substrate with a few airbound. Again, good luck to all ~
I bought two Mendenhalls yesterday and was warned not to repot them. They're in moss but I'll wait until there's new growth which will probably be next year. When it's time, I have plans to put both in the same pot. I uploaded a video yesterday showing off the leaves and pseudobulbs. I also have a feeling that it's better to repot them before they make a flower spike. I bought them in person from J&L Orchids in Connecticut.
Not a bad idea with C02! I watered some plants at work with carbonated water and the leaves grew incredibly large! Not all plants liked it but it was a fun experiment.
I also agree they hate cold, a sure way to kill them...done that. Repotting period in who knows what the best time is, killed one that way too. I had not heard of the miniature "butterfly" types. Never saw one for sale in Canada.
Yours looks healthy enough. I don't worry about humidity, because my plants live in my livingroom. All my orchids including the psychopsis, have to put up with AC and heating. Humans first but I adjust with some moss as best I can for those who need it.
Good luck blooming yours. I've only purchased some with spikes, never had one that decided to grow a spike on its own.
Getting an unbloomed one to spike requires almost perfect conditions and a very strong healthy plant.
Out in your grown room if you put a heat grow pad for plants put a rack over the top of it to give space between the pad and the pot you can bring up the warmth on any warm growing loving plant without really doing much adjustments to your growroom. I had some that were doing poorly and that's exactly what I did I gave them the warmth that they needed in the cooler weather. They are inexpensive on Amazon you can get large or small you can get them to fit the size of shelf you wish to give up for this. And the pad has a control built in on it that makes it where it will only heat up so high In other words it won't cook the plants it but it works. But make sure you keep and eye on it.

I really enjoy the CareCollabs and find it so helpful (and entertaining) to see the differing perspectives. I've enjoyed viewing new channels and also find it very useful for researching specific orchids before I commit to a purchase. My first Psychopsis struggled, nearly killed off the roots, but managed to bring it back and picked up an alba version as well. Both now have new roots, new growths and one has a spike starting. However, the alba has not yet experienced the dry winter conditions here yet so we'll see.
Hi Roger, I agree with you that you need to purchase a Psychopsis in good health with a growing root system. In my case, that didn't happen, hence the growing bag! You are on the same wave length with your Psychopsis Butterfly and I truly hope it grows for you. Yes, I must remember to blow in the bag! That was an interesting thought about CO2, never occurred to me, lol. Wishing you luck with the plant, it looks like its really working on some growing and just needs a bit of help.Hopefully wintering in house will provide warmer and better environment for it to get stronger.
It can't stay in that bag forever - it will have to grow roots before it can come out though.
I love the care collabs and hearing and comparing of all the different collections. I feel the same as you, on my tolumnias care collab.. mine are tiny tiny.

I'm always going to struggle with these - either too cold or too dry.
When I had my psychopsis, I found that it grew amazingly well in leca beads. None of my other orchids would grow in leca, but for whatever reason my psychopsis preferred it. 🤷🏼♂️
My Physcopsis flowered well with two spikes but the bulbs shrivelled and it was slowly going downhill with no new shoots. It had some root but no new roots. Decided to cut both flower spikes off! The result now I have two strong new growths so hope to build it back up. I grow intermediate to warm 16c-24c in winter
The effort of continually blooming is a drain on the plant.
@@GrowingOrchidswithRoger yes that is the main problem. Also it was in pure bark chips and needed more humidity at the roots. Now in a mix with some sphagnum, fingers crossed.

Mine just lost a leaf but it's working on a new. My fingers are crossed that mine does well.

Thanks, Roger, for sharing your lessons-learned. What went wrong is as important as a success-story. I heard from an AOS webinar that psychopsis grows best with phalaenopsis culture. BTW, why do they sometimes lose the markings on their leaves? I have one where the leaves from the new growth have the markings, but the older leaves are starting to lose it. I'm not certain, but I think the patterning goes when there is not enough light?
Mine lost all its roots and a new growth but has managed to get going again. They definitely like being indoors next to a humidifier or surrounded by other leafy plants. Try Laurence Hobbs for a good sized healthy plant, he’s very friendly and has amazing customer service

Mine grows in semi hydro, on a southern window sill. Grows big and beautiful.never has bloomed though. Vancouver island Canada
I enjoyed the video even though I haven't got any of these but I do have den phals which lost roots last winter, too cold and wet even though it didn't get below 15C. My question is if I take them into the lounge where the light isn't as good but there's a log fire and good central heating would they be happier or will it be too dry for them do you think please Roger?
Den. phal types like to stay warm - if cooler then drier. They don't need high light but they do need good light. Not sure if a log fire gives off fumes?

Roger, I did a plastic bag treatment for a rootless Phal. First, I soak the roots area in diluted black tea, with 10 drops of KLN, and five drops of lemon juice. I put it in the bag along with damp Spagna moss in a separate baggie. I blew into the bag giving it CO2. Amazingly it grew five roots over a months time. But other Orchids, that I tried the same procedure with didn’t respond as well.
I learned this procedure from Rafael’s Orchid site.

Ya.. killed mine. All the mottling disappeared from the leaves. Sad sad. 😢
The mottling disappears on some varieties, others retain it, doesn't mean it is unhealthy. Mine has almost no mottling. But yes, they tend to commit suicide often for no apparent reason.
Although I can't be sure, I think those that loose the patterning are not getting enough light.
