The way it is presented is reminiscent of the way some popular 16y.olds talk: "this ugly, thhis beautiful, obviously, look at that roofline, or jawline (if it was people they were talking about), that there is a big no no, obviously, nobody likes that". Of course the Multipla looked strange at first - then I absolutely loved it after half an hour, wonderful to drive (if you are not necessarily into sports cars) and so freakin practical!. But never mind me, I'm just old. So I asked, because I don't want to watch the whole video.
I think this is also why so many Gen Z and Millennial's Dgaf about vehicles the way past generations did...they just see them as giant money pits when all they are is a way to get from one point to another..
About the grill - I think the pinnacle of grill design was the Shelby AC Cobra. And if you squint real hard you can see that grill design on almost every Ford produced from the 1990s through today.

Small correction at 7:25. Japanese vehicles were already small, inexpensive and efficient before the oil embargo. Sales of Datsun, Toyota, etc. hugely increased. GM, Ford and Chrysler wanted back in. Giving us the Pinto, Gremlin, Pacer and others. At least, that is my understanding.

The issue with making cars look cool and tougher in case of a crash, is that it makes you more likely to actually get into a crash. Big pillars and small windows make you more likely to hit a pedestrian you didn’t see. And sadly they haven’t engineered a way to make pedestrians tougher.
The problem is not the vehicle, the problem is making people capable....driver and pedestrian alike. It's a weird paradox that people expect vehicles to be perfect but not themselves of how they drive or how aware they are regarding traffic while walking. In that grand scheme of things, everything in the video is cheap logic about vehicles that make little to no impact, maybe only in sales that's all.
I think another thing to acknowledge is that realistically, cars have always looked "the same". like it or not, a large amount of car design is recycling existing elements, with maybe 5% new stuff throughout the design. Some markets don't care about "uniqueness" and any deviations from traditional designs is just a risk, resulting in them looking "samey" (look at a '56 ford and chevy, or a '77 imperial/continental/eldorado, or a '14 rav4/tucson/escape). But, buyers of certain segments are usually more open to change, so that's where the design effort, and the more experimental elements get put in. Occasionally designers are willing to take larger risks, and inevitably some of these catch on, then once the public get used to them, other companies jump in on the trend, until everyone's made a couple of generations of cars off this, so they start making arbitrary small changes that don't wholly improve on the design, until some new trend takes off. I just think of the tailfins and low-long-wide '57 chryslers, the radical wedge-shaped gandini designs like the alfa romeo carabo, the aero body of the ford sierra, the concept of "corporate graphic design" on the Ford-Ghia saetta, the rearranged face of the nissan juke, maybe even the absurd brutalist minimalism of the cybertruck will catch on, who knows?
The bit about aerodynamics being the key factor for gas mileage is completely wrong: in Europe, for example, we had small cars because the fuel is always pricier than what you get in the US, but before we got around with aerodynamics most car makers tried something that the US manufacturers still can't do right even to this day... ... *build engiens that don't guzzle a gallon of gas to do half a yard.* Aerodynamics can only get you so far, if you have to put a gas tank that is the size of Texas just because your engine is unbelievably pityful on consumption and yield.
I think the Genesis line up has a very interesting design. I just purchased the 2018 G80 last month just for its styling. But even some people say they look the same as the 300 because of its badge. I don't see it but others swear they do.
Honestly, now that you set it out to me i see the subtle diferences, but, i still dont like where car design is right now. I have hope that with evs and a design revolution ppl will look back to retro design and put futuristic caracteristics on it. 80s and 90s design will come back with an ev twist, and im here for it

Most manufacturers do not have the guts to design something interesting. There are exceptions. But not they are - well - only exceptions. Oh and I hate the trend to paint every car in white....^^

Regulations will slowly change, too, so goodbye side mirrors and such. Right now, everything is based on safety and aerodynamics. Perhaps far into the future, self-driving will mean hardly any accidents, and endless clean energy will mean no more being slaves to aerodynamics and we'll get more wiggle room for design just for design's sake.
So, you acknowledge people today are craving the variety of designs of older times...but then dismiss that by saying "oh, this is just the standard and we have to live with it, it's the best design". Shouldn't there be a supply for that demand? Why not apply that argument to designs as well?
whats ironic is that even these "standardized" designs are still proprietary from a mechanical standpoint and will require their own individual components which defeats the purpose of his argument.

Why cant cars have legs and claws instead of wheels? Lets have cars with 2000 HP with machine gun turrets. Maybe a WV Beetle with four Concorde jet engines. Cars the size of a three story building with a swimming pool. Cars are boring because there is no imagination.
You show me 70s hatchbacks or 60s American land yacts, or 30s cars, I couldnt tell you the difference. Someone trying to convince me modern cars looks the same wouldn't get far. A RAV4 and CRV just dont look alike to me. There is a problem with brands though. You see one Mercedes you have seen every Mercedes under the sun. Brands go crazy for corporate designs. Some brands mire than others.
Gen Z here, prefer 1000k times a mid-late 90s sedan such as a Caprice, Fleetwood, Roadmaster, or Towncar, than today's boring lookalikes with "spaceship full of screens" interior.
Everything does look the same everything is now SUVs and crossovers. Everyone became a follower everything is bland and space ship looking at least when we actually had sedans wagon coupes plus minivans you had a big variety to choose from. Now you have no choice unless you're like me a still drive anything else except those things called SUVs and crossovers.
I don't buy that "regulation" excuse. It's just lazy design, forced by mass production needs. The ever increasing consolidation of car manufacturers will continue to suppress the unique designs in favor of larger profits.
