My friend always plays summoner, and he loves the new whips is 1.4, so when we played calamity, EVERY GOD DAMN SECOND, he would say, "i wish there were whips..."
OH and may i add he would noy use ANY of the op calamity sentries, because "minions are better" which is ironic because at the rnd he used temporal umbrella.
I used to not like summoner, but I feel like 1.4 did a pretty good job of buffing them. The whips are a cool addition, and the main problem is that summoner isn't very good pre hardmode. However, in hardmode there is a lot of new good summoner weapons, such as the Blade Staff and the Terraprisma. The main problem with summon weapons is the AI, but in the new update they did add some summon weapons with better AI.
I was originally going to talk about summon AI, but then realized that I am by no means qualified to talk about it. I could say things like "wow, the ufos sometimes dont attack enemies uh whoops," but that wouldn't really be a good argument to make. I do with they did make minions a bit smarter but at least most of the newer ones they added are much faster and have a much larger aggro range
The biggest issue with that though is that it means basically all summons are irrelevant as soon as you get your hands on one with good AI. Sanguine and Blade Staff are the best options from when you get them early in hardmode until you get either the Xeno staff or the Terraprisma. Their AI is just miles ahead of every other summon, so it makes the others worthless.
Yeah the thing is blade staff drops from queen slime and i hate this boss and then its damage is disgustingly low for my taste, if i play summoner i always try to get the seaunguine staff as fast as possible, great ai and range, can take you all the way to EoL Daytime or to the stardust pillar if you prefer that

In my opinion is more like this: Melee: actually don’t fight melee Ranger: “I have 24 rounds in this 6 rounds shotgun” Mage: the drunk one Summoner: summoner was destroyed by slime
My real problem with summoner weapons is how they deal fast moving enemies or enemies off screen. If an enemy moves too fast, summons like Raven or UFO staves literally can't have a chance to attack,for example, Empress of Light. If an enemy flies off screen they usually just fly back to you, instead of attacking the targeted enemy.
Summoner is in a grey area where you don't really know if it's good or bad to play as. Yes, semi-afk farming is possible with summoner but that's usually only possible late game, as most enemies in hardmode will easily two shot you if you're in something like early hardmode master mode. The only really good time I could think of playing it is in late game (if you can get your hands on a terraprisma, which I have heard is almost impossible as a summoner), while with other classes there's usually a large time frame where the class is useful (some classes are just good throughout the game, take something like ranger for example).
I personally don't like the terraprisma as it's waaaay too powerful, but summoner is sort of in that weird void where part of it is actually busted and the other part is awful

Terraprisma is hard to get. That’s why you immediately rush the thing the first chance you get so can keep suicide bombing to obtain the weapon. Hey only look 12 tries for my latest summoner playthrough.
It took me 89 times on my first playthrough and 79 times on my second. I kept dying to phase 2 during the Pattern 4-5-6 loop because the projectiles are still on screen and she dashes ahead of you to sun dance and in a lot of instances it was legitimately impossible to dodge even with RoD.

Throwing use to be awesome in Calamity but Calamity decided to just turn all the new awesome weapons in calamity into a new class while still having the very few weapons in pre-hardmode still exist.
Caleb Ebdon Obsidian set is kinda op, 50% increased whip range and speed on top of an absurd +45% minion dmg up. Wall of Flesh was a joke in master mode. Oh and flinx gear is honestly a godsend for early game.
Fuck yeah! You can have that with early Dread Nautilus (or you cheese it), with early Duke Fishron for the OP Sharknados (or you cheese it) and of course with the Empress (now way to cheese, just die a lot😂).

Oh my goodness I watched your old summoner video yesterday and was actually just thinking I would love a follow-up! I’ve been playing summoner since even before the update. As a summoner main, I can agree that although the changes made things a lot better, it’s still not as fun and fleshed out as other classes. That being said, I’m still a summoner main for life, because I’m stubborn.
Yeah, I looked it up a few days before uploading this and saw that. I was a bit too lazy to change that part of the script, but I do recall having minions cancel out some of my attacks in a master mode playthrough, so it could still be in the game, I don't know

@@aggressivebungee my friend and I are doing a for the worthy run with each of us mainly going for each classes. I went for summoner, and purely with the obsidian armour and using whip combos. I decimated pre hard mode so hard my melee class friend used a whip in early post hard mode. Even now I'm using a mixture of 4 whips with sanguine staff/blade staff with obsidian armour still and have single handedly beaten one of the twins eyes with 4 other people on as well. Safe to say. I'm loving summoner...and whips
1.2 Summoner is best summoner, gotta love going through all of pre hardmode with a bee staff and then using a spider/twins staff and early game hardmode armor all the way to plantera to just get access to two more sets of armor marginally better than before
I think the Flinx Coat and the Flinx Staff fix the early game problem. Unfortunately for the early-early-early game, there's only the finch and slime staff, yeah...

The rarity part hit me in the chest. When 1.4 came out i started an only summoner playthrough. went to grind for the blade staff in hardmode and got 3 rod of discord and 3 hallow keys before i got the god damn staff xd.
Same thing happened with me and the rods of discord, but I only got one hallowed key. How long were you at it for? I think I was farming for somewhere between 3 and 5 hours

Yeah, I watched a video about two dudes playing Master mode Terraria, and the Summoner guy was much weaker than the Ranger dude (who at the start wanted to be a warrior)
I chose summoner for my first playthrough purely because I got a Mythical Finch Staff in my first chest. But I really fell in love with it when I got the Flinx Staff and Coat. Seeing those fluff balls aggressively chase and literally curbstomp my enemies was horrifying and magnificent.
The fact that the best weapon for summoner is locked behind a boss fight which is the hardest to do for summoners due to all the shit with summons AI is just proof that re-logic want's summoners to suffer.

Imo, summoner is... still kinda bad. Hear me out, it’s near impossible (or at least stupidly hard) to get through pre-hardmode. The first whip you can get without jungle grinding (because who enjoys THAT?) requires you to kill a LOT of different enemies. This is already a challenge in itself because there’s just enough enemies to get it pre-hardmode, but you have to deal without actually being able to use a whip until then. And as you mentioned, staves are also stupidly rare in pre-hardmode. So you’re pretty defenseless unless you go out and actually grind for hours. Boy I can’t wait for calamity to come to 1.4. I wonder what kinds of effects the whips in that mod will have. I love the class, it just kinda sucks early-game
Yeah, venom is much better now and I’m using spiders a bit more than i used to, but that doesn’t help the fact that they are awful in open spaces, aka where you’re fighting any boss
I sincerely dont like whips, they may have new and cool abilities, but its a mellee weapon for the class that has less defence of all the four, and even it gives more emotion to summoner, i would prefer a magic-summoner-thing.
It would be cool to have some sort of spell for summoner, but in my eyes at least, whips are just short ranged spells that enhance your minions and deal some damage
it would not work as well, melee is the oposite of 1.3 summoner, having a magic/ranger weapon would just mean you have to shot at it(coming from a ranger main) point being it would not be so different than 1.3 summoner.

the whole blood moon fishing thing. the first time for me, at least i was just grinding for angler quest stuff and i got that book of self defence and then i learnt of enemies appearing cause before i just thought only that blood shell boss could be fished
Quick tip for a summon Play through: In the underground ice biome, Flinx can spawn; they drop materials for a set that grants an extra summon! (You can also make an above decent summon)
I always bring some sort of side weapon or weapons in order to better protect myself. It’s either some form of magic or melee or weapons from what used to be the throwing class.
2:15 to escape you first take out the pink slimes on the ground as it would be easy with one swing of the kaleidoscope, next wait for queen slime or empress of light to hit you outwards or you can just make a run for it when you get a small window of time.(0.1 seconds or more is enough time to pull a discord or dash out.)
Tbh idk if the things im going to list are gonna be easy to implement but here goes. 1. Minions attack the deadliest mobs, the biggest bunch of mobs and then the most common mobs in that order (aka bosses>minibosses>lots of enemies in one place>strong mobs>common mobs), aka minion priority list. 2. Raise the defense of late game summoner armor to the level of either orichalcum mage armor or cobalt warrior armor (idk which one has higher but still low defense). 3. Raise the probability of summoner weapon drops from events, especially pirate staff.
I thought they fixed the I frames problem though? Didn't they make the summons do there own type of damage so that bullets, swords, magic, and pretty much everything could still hit the enemy?
Yeah, kind of. 1.4.1 changed some of the most problematic minions so now they use "private i-frames," so they shouldn't screw around with other weapons and minions. This doesn't go for all of them though as some minions like the imps still cancels itself out along with your attacks which is why I hate using them
I started playing terraria again for the first time in years. My first time playing 1.4 and I crafted the Snapthorn and instantly fell in love and went summoner for the rest of the playthrough. The Spider Staff was honestly really successful and helped out before I found a Dreadnautilus cheese strat.
The only Thing Summoner needs in Terms of Armor is Summoner headgear imo. I hate the Fact that cobalt-chlorophyte has 5 different Armor Sets for 3 classes, while Summoner gets 1-2 unique Sets(desert is dualclass and has snow biome Armor for the Other 2 as a counterset and spider). Its kinda weird. In Terms of accessories, im perfectly happy with the amount, Just would be cool to have some more creative ones then "get more Minions/they do more damage" but every class except melee has that problem. In Terms of weapons, really Happy about the whips, but we need much more staffs and turrets(there are almost None If you dont Play the Dungeon Defender Part of the Game), especially in pre-hardmode. Its mages Problem but you cant craft a Wand Out of gems to fix it.

Just saying the pirate staff ai is very stupid, when it sees a target they won't get off of it and they don't come back to you if you go far.

Its pretty easy to get it with zenith,even on master mode.

@@aggressivebungee my friend and I are doing a for the worthy run with each of us mainly going for each classes. I went for summoner, and purely with the obsidian armour and using whip combos. I decimated pre hard mode so hard my melee class friend used a whip in early post hard mode. Even now I'm using a mixture of 4 whips with sanguine staff/blade staff with obsidian armour still and have single handedly beaten one of the twins eyes with 4 other people on as well. Safe to say. I'm loving summoner...and whips
1.2 Summoner is best summoner, gotta love going through all of pre hardmode with a bee staff and then using a spider/twins staff and early game hardmode armor all the way to plantera to just get access to two more sets of armor marginally better than before

Well he talks about summoner in 1.4. In the times when there were five classes in the game, summoner was a liiiittle bit weaker lol
I feel like the only problem with summoners is trying to survive. Wish there were more summoner sets like the hallowed which had self preservation abilities
1.4 summoner is alright but calamity summoner is really good REALLY GOOD elemental axe shreds providence, dragonfolly and the profaned guardians calamity summoner prehardmode opens new options and armor thats really good.

The rarity part hit me in the chest. When 1.4 came out i started an only summoner playthrough. went to grind for the blade staff in hardmode and got 3 rod of discord and 3 hallow keys before i got the god damn staff xd.
Same thing happened with me and the rods of discord, but I only got one hallowed key. How long were you at it for? I think I was farming for somewhere between 3 and 5 hours
@@aggressivebungee You can make light keys from souls of light and use them to turn regular chests into hallowed mimics.

I chose summoner for my first playthrough purely because I got a Mythical Finch Staff in my first chest. But I really fell in love with it when I got the Flinx Staff and Coat. Seeing those fluff balls aggressively chase and literally curbstomp my enemies was horrifying and magnificent.

The fact that the best weapon for summoner is locked behind a boss fight which is the hardest to do for summoners due to all the shit with summons AI is just proof that re-logic want's summoners to suffer.

Completely agree. That being said, while the class still has its issues, I think it's finally in a good spot now, given that its last big gap in progression (early game) has just been patched up thanks to 1.4.1.

Imo, summoner is... still kinda bad. Hear me out, it’s near impossible (or at least stupidly hard) to get through pre-hardmode. The first whip you can get without jungle grinding (because who enjoys THAT?) requires you to kill a LOT of different enemies. This is already a challenge in itself because there’s just enough enemies to get it pre-hardmode, but you have to deal without actually being able to use a whip until then.
And as you mentioned, staves are also stupidly rare in pre-hardmode. So you’re pretty defenseless unless you go out and actually grind for hours.
Boy I can’t wait for calamity to come to 1.4. I wonder what kinds of effects the whips in that mod will have.
I love the class, it just kinda sucks early-game
I guess we can think of summoner as a challenge class for those willing to play it.

A note on the spider staff, the Venom debuff was entirely reworked so it can hit pretty much anything and the damage was DOUBLED.
Yeah, venom is much better now and I’m using spiders a bit more than i used to, but that doesn’t help the fact that they are awful in open spaces, aka where you’re fighting any boss
I sincerely dont like whips, they may have new and cool abilities, but its a mellee weapon for the class that has less defence of all the four, and even it gives more emotion to summoner, i would prefer a magic-summoner-thing.
It would be cool to have some sort of spell for summoner, but in my eyes at least, whips are just short ranged spells that enhance your minions and deal some damage
melee is overrated
it would not work as well, melee is the oposite of 1.3 summoner, having a magic/ranger weapon would just mean you have to shot at it(coming from a ranger main)
point being it would not be so different than 1.3 summoner.

I like summoner because I can focus on dodging (which is kinda what it's for I think because it has the least defence of all classes)
the whole blood moon fishing thing. the first time for me, at least i was just grinding for angler quest stuff and i got that book of self defence and then i learnt of enemies appearing cause before i just thought only that blood shell boss could be fished
These reasons are why I play summoner on multiplayer as I can grind items for my friends so they can focus on other things
Quick tip for a summon Play through: In the underground ice biome, Flinx can spawn; they drop materials for a set that grants an extra summon! (You can also make an above decent summon)

I always bring some sort of side weapon or weapons in order to better protect myself. It’s either some form of magic or melee or weapons from what used to be the throwing class.
No matter what class I play, I always have a sword or some other melee weapon for self defense.
2:15 to escape you first take out the pink slimes on the ground as it would be easy with one swing of the kaleidoscope, next wait for queen slime or empress of light to hit you outwards or you can just make a run for it when you get a small window of time.(0.1 seconds or more is enough time to pull a discord or dash out.)

Anyways remember Some mounts damage is infact summoner damage.
Tbh idk if the things im going to list are gonna be easy to implement but here goes.
1. Minions attack the deadliest mobs, the biggest bunch of mobs and then the most common mobs in that order (aka bosses>minibosses>lots of enemies in one place>strong mobs>common mobs), aka minion priority list.
2. Raise the defense of late game summoner armor to the level of either orichalcum mage armor or cobalt warrior armor (idk which one has higher but still low defense).
3. Raise the probability of summoner weapon drops from events, especially pirate staff.

I thought they fixed the I frames problem though? Didn't they make the summons do there own type of damage so that bullets, swords, magic, and pretty much everything could still hit the enemy?
Yeah, kind of. 1.4.1 changed some of the most problematic minions so now they use "private i-frames," so they shouldn't screw around with other weapons and minions. This doesn't go for all of them though as some minions like the imps still cancels itself out along with your attacks which is why I hate using them
I started playing terraria again for the first time in years. My first time playing 1.4 and I crafted the Snapthorn and instantly fell in love and went summoner for the rest of the playthrough. The Spider Staff was honestly really successful and helped out before I found a Dreadnautilus cheese strat.
Beating the game with a full summoner run in 1.4 before the new summoner changes before 1.4.1

The only Thing Summoner needs in Terms of Armor is Summoner headgear imo. I hate the Fact that cobalt-chlorophyte has 5 different Armor Sets for 3 classes, while Summoner gets 1-2 unique Sets(desert is dualclass and has snow biome Armor for the Other 2 as a counterset and spider). Its kinda weird. In Terms of accessories, im perfectly happy with the amount, Just would be cool to have some more creative ones then "get more Minions/they do more damage" but every class except melee has that problem. In Terms of weapons, really Happy about the whips, but we need much more staffs and turrets(there are almost None If you dont Play the Dungeon Defender Part of the Game), especially in pre-hardmode. Its mages Problem but you cant craft a Wand Out of gems to fix it.
