  • Mexicola Grande has been our most productive avocado tree at our home in Sarasota, Florida. The fruit is easy to tell when ripe and always ripens perfectly for us. The thumbnail photo shows Mexicola Grande on the left, Brogdon in the middle, and a grocery store Hass on the right.
Sulcata Grove is our 2 acre, backyard food forest. We grow over 60 varieties of bananas along with many fruit trees. Our videos are family friendly.

By the color they look fantastic. I haven’t had a pale flesh avocado impression me yet. These look similar to hass flesh.

I personally love the Mexicola. It’s cold tolerance allows it to be grown so far north as well.

It’s a great avocado - and so easy to tell when to pick it.

How close to ripening do they start turning black? My new tree bloomed in Feb and 5 months later the fruit is turning black and I'm hoping it isn't sunburn, I've just built it some shade. Hot Central Fl, what do you think? PS; I haven't tasted one yet and am excited you gave it such high marks.

I pick them when the skin is totally black and then let them soften on the counter.

The fruit shape (and flesh color) matches cultivar Brogden a little better; any chance it might have been that variety?

No. We grow Brogdon as well. Mexicola Grande is a larger fruit with better flesh/seed ration.

Do you know of it will take colder temperatures, further out in the countryside or north of you?

It is fast growing and is said to be very cold tolerant to 18-20 degrees f

Thanks for the video. does tree get real big. or is it a compact grower.

    • @SulcataGrove

Our tree is still fairly young, but it seems to want to grow fairly big. Day has been our most compact grower so far.

Hass is better, but Mexicola grande produces much better for us.

Just basing the ID off what an experienced avocado grower those us after looking at our tree. We grow Brogden too and the fruits are different. The leaves smell different (spicier scented leaves on this fruit).

@@timtebow4775 I haven’t tasted them side by size because these always ripen earlier than our brogdons. There might be some crossover this year though.

It should be easy to distinguish the two. Mexicola grande is A type and Brogden is B type.
