- We are first generation ranchers. We are starting small and slowly building our homestead and bison ranch. Yanasa Ama Ranch is about what it is like to attempt to build a ranch in the 21st Century as a first generation farmer. Challenges arise for this mainstream millennial family as they build their legacy and leave their mark. From expensive land and land development costs to self-sustainability they cover it all.

Actually Jason, you're "I Can" video was awesome...
If you haven't already, I would recommend Richard Perkins channel which is very practical and pragmatic on starting with what can generate income as you develop your property. Not only from an income stream standpoint, but in production that provides food for the family.Applying the principles he teaches you could put those "hayburners" to work for you amending the soil etc. Anything you can raise is a plus, the alternative is earning income, pay the tax on it, then pay the sales tax on the purchases etc.
+WindRose we will definitely check out Richard Perkins. One of the biggest lessons to learn when putting property to work is how to carve out enough space on it for self sustainability as well. Groceries are a huge expense for a family of 5 that can easily be reduced by growing food.

We move into our homestead in June...and the sheep and goats are arriving in July...we need to get fencing done too! So much to do.... Love it though...meaningful life :)

We have about half a dozen Bison/Buffalo ranches here in Oregon. They are majestic animals. And great meat for the table.

A very traditional reason and purpose for starting to Homestead. You guys have come a long way can't wait to see it progress. It's refreshing to see a young couple building a purpose and family business.
+Best of Homesteading thank you for the kind words! We believe "Homesteading" is a necessary ingredient of ranching or farming. Although we don't necessarily believe we are as prudent to the extent many others are, self sufficiency is a goal we should all strive for in some capacity.

Wonder if you have a sweet grass similar to the one used for Polish Zubrowka. Awesome vodka flavored solely from sweet grass harvested where the European Bison are. My family is originally not far from that area. Probably close in latitude and weather to your place. Here in New Mexico Ted Turner runs 2 big ranches with the American Bison.
Just curious, what is your background and education before starting this ranch?
What size bison herd and how many acres do you recommend to start? I've heard 12 head minimum and 50 acres. And do you think you could start by rendting vs owning the land?

Land is too expensive to buy... just rent it from others. There is no profit in buying land unless you do all the work yourself.. and even then it's a gamble.
People back home that remain farmers tend up between 3000-5000 acres nearly all of it is leased, yet they just barely get by.

This whole video is neat, but there wasnt a single mention of God, haven't heard "Thank the Lord Jesus for blessing us with such an amazing property" in the whole 3 minute video. I mean, where is the praise for the Creator? It may not be a big deal to others but this is for me.
