    Hope everyone is enjoying the video and has a great start to their weekend!
    Here are some responses about frequently asked cards for this one.
    Tabernacle of Pendrell Vale - It isn't on the list because it doesn't have cumulative upkeep, it isn't an increasing amount of mana, it is always the same.
    Braid of Fire - Definitely an interesting one since it got powered up following the elimination of mana burn, and while this thing is a powerhouse in EDH and on kitchen tables because of that, it is too slow for constructed formats.
    Herlad of Leshrac - Another card that's nice in EDH, but too slow for GPs and PTs.

      surprsed my favorite upkeep card isn't here, I never had the cards for it but wanted to make the deck, varchild's warriders. That with dingus staff, and anything that can kill 1/1 creatures easily.

    • @nobodyimportant72
      @nobodyimportant72 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      I was wondering about that Braid of Fire. Of course it's from Coldsnap and the mana would need to be spent during upkeep but sure would have been a way to keep paying the upkeep on other spells.
      A crazy thought: How about some "top 10 rule changes" that drastically altered the power levels of certain cards. Right off three things that come to mind are Companions, mana burn which made anything that made "unneeded mana" painless instead of a risk, and also "Damage on the Stack" which completely altered how things like Mogg Fanatic and Morphling perform in combat.

      I don't think it's the upkeep part that holds it back. Control decks don't care about the opponent's life total. It's the fact that defenders (without abilities) are historically bad and only used as sideboard cards in very specific metagames. If anything the upkeep part is an upside that helps you trigger cards like timely reinforcements and stops your Death's Shadow opponent from going off.

    I could see Wall of Shards working well in an Arcades EDH deck. Not only is it a cheap 8/8 flying, but many Arcades decks run a lot of flicker effects, to flicker walls to draw extra cards with Arcades, so that's an easy way to reset the time counters. Personally, I passed it up for my own Arcades deck, but it's definitely in the top 10 cards I'm considering putting in.

    Cumulative Upkeep just goes to show something I saw in the Worst Mechanics video; If you give a card powerful enough effects or cost them right, it doesn't matter if it has a poorly done mechanic. The problem was so many of those mechanics were creature mechanics, where the creatures had nothing to offer besides stats FROM the mechanic. Add Banding to a 2/2 first strike for 2 mana and it would be fine. Add Rampage 2 to a 3/4 to 4 with Vigilance and it would be nice if minor upside. Too many of those mechanics were seen as some huge upside and costed like they were; At least with Cumulative Upkeep they added it to some impactful cards since they already knew it was a downside.

    I got to your mention of Illusions of Grandeur and that score seemed absurd to me, so I did some digging. Checked a few top 8 lists for extended GPs at that time, and every single one included 1-4 copies of Trix. I know you're not trying to do exhaustive research here, but remember that there's a lot of info from old tournaments still hanging around on WotC's archives. GP Florence and GP Kuala Lumpur both had 4 Trix decks in the top 8. Somebody needs to put that shit in an archive before it gets wiped.

    No love for Braid of Fire? For 2 mana, you get crazy ramp. At the time, it was bad because of mana burn, but now that that doesn't exist, its only downside is that it costs 2 to cast. With enough instants or flash creatures, the fact that it's during your upkeep shouldn't matter too much.

    Cumulative upkeep held the promise to make really obscenely powerful permanents playable, it never really lived up to it because cards power sucked between The Dark and Stronghold. Better mechanics came out since then.

  • @TheShinyFeraligatr
    @TheShinyFeraligatr 5 ปีที่แล้ว

    Number one (or a really high number) on the Worst Mechanics List is going to be Epic, right? Only one of its cards are good enough to see tournament play, and there were only five of them. I don’t know how you’re going to weight things towards smaller mechanics though (One Cycle Only mechanics like Epic and Hideaway are automatically at a disadvantage, as are small set only mechanics like Chroma or whatever)

    • @NizzahonMagic
      @NizzahonMagic  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      To be elligible, a mechanic has to be on 10 cards. That said, one card of a cycle of 5 seeing play is a rate of 20%, and that's wayyyyyyyyyyyyyy higher than any mechanic to make the list.

    • @TheShinyFeraligatr
      @TheShinyFeraligatr 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      That’s gonna be rough for mechanics with only 10 cards, but I imagine you can’t weight it by percentage or else evergreen mechanics since Alpha are going to get the short end of the stick.

    • @NizzahonMagic
      @NizzahonMagic  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      No evergreen mechanic makes the list, they are all too succesful, so the problems you are imagining don't show up.

    • @NizzahonMagic
