Best Wishes for your journey to graduation. Yes, I cut the leek roots --- a trick I learned from "the Big GUY" GSUP --- also can cut the tops off too if too long he said . 👍

Tony if it had of been me i would have carried the Cauliflower along, planted it, then came back to the car with a wheel barrow and took everything along in one trip. I wash the roots of my leeks, but i have never heard of trimming the roots, definitely a new one on me, i also just make the hole, put the leeks in then water them ( leaving the hole unfilled, and i go down about 8", i tend to get more white without having to bank up, also with the hole left open they seem to grow a bit fatter than if the hole is closed ) I love your plot and really enjoy watching your videos, Been Stotting down here in Gateshead today.

Very enjoyable update Tony. Your Pak Choi look great. Mine were decimated by slugs 😢 second batch on the way 🤞. I've also sown some more spinach and final beetroot for the season. I'm hoping for a warm and settled September and October, wouldn't that be good 🙂. Enjoy graduation, have a good time. Paul

Another brilliant video with all the Tony favourites: swearing at the weather, mullering the names of the veg and fondling/stroking/tickling a vegetable. Hope we get an update on your son's graduation - congratulations!

Hi Tony. Leeks some trim the roots some trim the tops some do both some do non of the aforementioned. It does not seam to make any difference. I do nothing myself just the odd one's roots to help them into the hole when required saving time.

I saw someone on instagram cut the roots of their leeks and did it last year to great effect. I think its ok to do if you can be bothered, but there is nowt wrong with just planting as they are too. I never saw a reason why the roots get trimmed either so not really sure what the benefit is.
I have my fingers crossed for your Pak Choi to be in once piece when you get back, they look so beautiful I would hate for the pigeons or ruin them.

Mostly it's a convenience for the gardener. Maybe it also reduces a certain amount of stress (if any?) to the leeks that might be caused by trying to untangle the roots, if the seeds had been thickly sown either in-ground or in a starter pot or starter cell. Leeks are amazingly forgiving and quite resilient.
I've cut leek roots when transplanting, and I've just dunked the root mass to wash off the soil and then worked to untangle those roots. Both methods have worked just fine, but I'd say trimming the roots makes for less wear and tear on this gardener.

There is two schools of thought on cutting leek roots. Cut them and they go into the dibbled hole better. Don’t cut them, as it is the end of the roots that take up water and nutrients. I only trim extra long straggly roots. The other issue was her dibber. To tapered. It does not make an ideal hole deep enough to blanch a long part of the stem. The dibber you used is ideal.
