I did this only recently. I retired and got a really good exercise bike. And I just started riding. My goal...or maybe I should say my intention...was to ride at least four days a week, at least 8 miles each time (32 miles a week). The goal was enough to be challenging at first, but not something that was beyond me. The first week of this year, after several months of that, I decided that I wanted to see if I could match something I did ten years ago, which was to ride a 22 mile trail on one day, and then the reverse direction the next. I did that with ease, and in fact rode over 100 miles that week. But I did *not* set an intention of riding 100 miles every week. I knew that would be too much. For the new year, my goal is to ride at least four days a week, at least 50 miles per week. (I dropped the minimum for any given day, though it has always been at least 8 miles.) And it has been easy! I just made it my habit. I have really come to enjoy the exercise (though the first ten minutes can be hard), and I feel great afterwards.
My time at the piano has also gone up, and another intention I set was to identify what skills I am lacking, but am ready to take on. One was to learn more about diminished chords. For a month or more, I drilled on all of the diminished chord inversions so that they became second nature. Then I studied how to use them, and within a week, I realized that I had discovered a kind of portal system that lets me hop all over the musical universe. There are certain jazzy progressions I can now easily play on the fly in any key, and it sounds *great*! All I had to do was make it a habit first to become familiar with the chords, and then familiar with the application. Now I realize there are many things I am ready to start taking on. I have already moved on to augmented chords, for example, and a whole new set of portals are becoming available.
So when I saw the words "habit" and "intention,", I thought, hey, this guy is stealing my ideas again! :)

      Hello.
Congrats to you for your biking habits.
That sounds like a good thing to do when you retire.
And for the jazz progressions, you have something meaningful going on for yourself. Congrats, and good luck with all you're doing.

Hey Gjermund I got a bit confused, thought I might find some cool, smart jazz piano tricks over here! Did our great idols went through all of these in their time?

Hi. Jazz piano tricks are coming. 🎹😃
I felt compelled to make this vital video and challenge first.
I don't think our great jazz idols had to insert the habit of practicing. A huge reason why they became great in the first place is that they constantly played. But music is not only meant for the elite.
Most of my students are non-professionals who have jazz piano as a hobby. Many of the students I've had over the years have a strong passion for music/jazz, but very often, they do not practice systematically and consistently over time. Hence, they end up needing help to play at the desired level.
So, the INTENTION may be there, but when the HABIT is not, the RESULT is less than the potential.

@@Gjermund-Sivertsen Thanks for your response! It was a bit of a joke on my behalf. I really like your channel. But for a moment there I thought I was reading 5am Club again! Kind regards.
PS I recently had my very first cocktail piano gig, and used a LOT of your teachings on the matter. Thanks Gjermund!!!

      Hello again.
Yes, that's a good point. The 5am Club... I know about that one.
Congrats on your cocktail gig! I'm happy to hear you keep the style alive 🎹😃
