I loved AG show wonderful actors to. I'am 66 yrs old and I'am happy I was a baby watching AG back in the day I remember AG on TV I was 6 yrs old. I remember the man whistling on the intro and my dog would howl. so funny. but I know AG show started in 1960 I think but I was to young to remember much at that age I was 3 yrs old but by the time I was 4 or 5 I remember the show then. but thankyou for this tour of the sets.
I still watch the Andy Griffith Show every day. This show is precious ......I love how GOD is honored and families looked out for each other. My favorite girlfriend for Andy was Peggy. They should have signed her ......she added beauty and great personality .........she was perfect for Andy. And she sang like an angel.
Thank you so much for doing this. I look back with fond memories to the 60's when I was a young boy, and how much I enjoyed watching the Andy Griffith show. I wish they would produce good wholesome shows today like they did then. Thank you.

B2_ Froze HELLO!!! So... I live in Eastern NC and I just thought that perhaps you might appreciate this little tidbit: So, if you were to travel to Mount Airy, NC you would see some very interesting things. There is a hamburger joint called Goobers there, a Mayberry hotel, and even the town's Police cars still run the streets of this quaint town. The Policeman actually works at the hotel, and drives his old Andy Griffith Police car to work. Those cars are actually still operating as the town's official Police cars! It's such a fun step back in time. (Just as I have found living in the state of NC to be). It's truly like going back in time 60yrs. I moved here 30yrs ago and haven't regretted it one bit. A fabulous place to raise children & I've never had to even lock my doors!!! Grant it, every place has it's "bad side", but they've recently just named NC "No.#1 in the Nation"... for jobs, & many other things!!! It's just like Mayberry in most of our small towns, still today. But I digress... Still though, if you go to Mt. Airy's Main Street, you'll find it is a great little time capsule, with loverly little old tyme shops,... and it's all nestled in, right at the beginnings of the NC mountain range. Right at the point to which the mountains of NC just begin, & where they really start to show off their incredible beauty...esp in Spring & Fall!!! They're close to the Blue Ridge Pkwy & another fun town, ...Asheville, NC. I have visited Mt. Airy many times, enjoying myself tremendously, each & every time that I have gone. I hope you are able to visit that area at some point. It's a hoot, seeing those names on active store fronts, and of course, ...the cars!!! Also, Andy Griffith filmed his Matlock show here in Eastern NC's town of Wilmington, at Screen Gems Studio's. It is a great place to visit also and you can even be an extra in many of the shows/movies that they film there today.
B2_ Froze I heard that Andy would get so tickled with Don during a show he would just run off laughing. I still watch the shows especially Aunt Bees pickles. The last of that one shows she had made marmalade and Barney ask if they had been painting. Only saw it a couple of times. So funny good clean fun. Not like now.
Of course I think I've seen every show a handful of times already, I'm currently watching them all (several a day) on Netflix. I believe they've uploaded every season. This show never gets old, and I doubt it ever will. Great family entertainment.

The opening sequence of The Andy Griffith Show was filmed at the Franklin Canyon Reservoir. It is located just north of Beverly Hills. Franklin Canyon Reservoir also doubled as Myers Lake in some of the episodes...The area is a park and it is virtually unchanged since the show was filmed there. You can go and walk the same trail that Opie and Andy walked in the opening sequence of the show.

This is tremendous stuff, if you are of a certain age, and know a bit of Los Angeles, it's a primary historical document. Factually 100% correct, it's the best I have seen. Well done sir.

Thanks for posting. I'm in my 40's but have always loved this show. I wish more shows today were like this. If you haven't picked up the book about Don Knotts and Andy's friendship, you should. Its a great read. I think its written by Don's brother in law.
+BoosterG I got the book from Amazon soon as it was made available, very interesting up close and personal. I enjoyed reading it, I have to admit there are some things in there that were a little disappointing, but one has to realize these guys were human and they were actors, it can be hard sometimes for a fan to realize sometimes that the characters they portray normally do not reflect the actor in personal life. This by far my most favorite book on Andy and Barney as it tells it all the good and the bad, gives the reader an honest look in the their lives and their involvement in show business
I really enjoyed watching this, Great job! I'm heading to Mt Airy NC next month to visit and tour all the attractions including the Andy Griffith museum and Snappy Lunch. Whether it's full episodes or TH-cam clips I'm always watching the Andy Griffith show. It's just the greatest ever!!

I know this is an Andy story but I might add a bit. Folks in Jamestown NY to this day refer to their back yards as “the back 40”. So many folks still have connections with Lucy’s family and the folks families who remained close. The house in Celoron she grew up in now sports a wonderful crooked barbecue as an exact copy tribute to the one she and Ethel built in one episode. Pretty amazing to think a cute little dancer from a small western New York town would touch so many lives. She and desi took us to magical places from the peaceful life in Mayberry to the uncertainty of our intergalactic future
steve burgamy Yes the shows today the entire family can't watch. Language etc. I go back in time to a safer place and watch Andy Barney and the town of Mayberry. What a great time it was.
Steve I do agree with you today's comedy is too sanitized and PC that to me its not funny at all. I don,t even go to movies anymore. The comedy sitcoms today are not that funny. I don,t even watch them.

+sthpac69 Thank you, I enjoyed visiting there, although it has changed hands and operations since Desilu, it still looks much the same. They will not allow you to go inside unless you have business there, so I had to shoot everything from the street, but still was fun.
+SandhillDigger How come you did not film the actual house at 830 Lillian Way? If Lillian Way is just a public street, not associated with or owned by RED Studios) as you said it wasn't in the Desilu era), you would have been within your rights to have filmed the house from the sidewalk or street. Also, do you happen to know which houses were used for the exterior shots of "Andy Taylor's" and "Helen Crump's" houses? Were they from houses on the "Forty Acres" backlot? Or was 830 Lillian used for those too?
+SandhillDigger I also wonder what property was used for exterior shots of the original "Steve Douglas" house (in "Bryant Park") in the first five seasons (on ABC) of "My Three Sons?" That series was also shot at Desilu, even though it was a Don Fedderson Production. In fact, the late Don Grady once told me "M3S" shot right next door to "The Lucy Show," and that William "Bub" Frawley would ask the boys (Don "Robbie" Grady himself, as well Stan "Chip" Livingston and Tim "Mike" Considine) to toss a Frisbee with which they had been playing in Vivian Vance's direction, just to bug her. It is almost legend at this point there was no love lost between Frawley and Vance, who portrayed what were perhaps television's most well-known neighbors, "Fred & Ethel Mertz," in "I Love Lucy." And Vance herself is also probably TV's most popular second banana, in a close competition with Art Carney ( "Ed Norton" in "The Honeymooners"), Don Knotts ("Barney Fife" in "The Andy Griffith Show"), Mary Tyler Moore ("Laura Petrie" in "The Dick Van Dyke Show"), and Jean Stapleton ("Edith Bunker" in"All in the Family"). Although, perhaps Moore and Stapleton don't really qualify as "second bananas," since each was really almost equal to her respective TV spouse, Van Dyke's "Rob Petrie" and Carroll O'Connor's "Archie Bunker." But I really think one has to give it to Vance, since she co-starred in two of Lucille Ball's series'. I realize Knotts made some cameos in Griffith's "Matlock" series, and that Carney portrayed his "Norton" character in both "The Honeymooners" and "The Jackie Gleason Show." But in terms of total screen time, Vance filmed many more episodes with Lucy than either of the other two actors did in their respective series'.
+gymnastix the homes across the street on Lillian away we're torn down long ago. Look at the address on Google Maps, Streetview, and you can see. And yes, Andy and Helens houses were filmed at 40 Acres. Also, the episode Goober Takes A Car Apart, appears to have been filmed on Lilian Way also. The scene where Gilly stops to pick up Goober.
+gymnastix The houses on Lillian Way were all torn down years ago to build a parking lot for the studio. Check out 1:43 on the video. This old sign left over from Ren-mar Studio is on the fence which houses the parking lot, which is where the houses were located before they were razed. The sign is also a witness that this was done at the time the studio belonged to Ren-mar. Andy's and Helen's house exteriors were on the "Forty Acres" back lot. All of that was razed in 1976 and became an industrial park.

SandhillDigger, if I am not mistaken the entrance to the studio was also used in the episode where Gomer goes into the Marine Corp, the scene where Gomer & Andy show Gomer's paperwork to the Marine Guard and he points in the direction they need to go.
+704 BUGMAN That is correct ! This was the film location for the buildings at Camp Henderson. It was at the gate of the studio where they checked in with the MP. Also in the scene where Gomer is coming out of the warehouse with his gear with Sgt Carter is yelling at him, that is one of the elephant doors to Soundstage #8, you can see the number 8 on the wall. There is also another episode where Gomer is walking in front the brick building on the side walk. That brick building on the side walk is the Boys and Girls Club if I remember correctly from my visit there.

+Kevin Doran Yep, the famous take off scene was filmed in the alley next to the theater, in one episode Clark Kent is driving up a dirt road on a mountain after a school bus, that is Baldwin Hills, in the scene you can see the 40 acres back lot in the background as well as what was left as Tara in Gone With The Wind. The road up on the mountain is still there but now it is paved.

Lived next to Desilu in Culver City. . use to sneak in the back lot all the time in the 70s.. Hogans Hero's and Gomer Pile was still filming, No one mentioned the artificial lake across La Ballona creek. . all gone :(
The Tarzan Lagoon....it was also used in The Andy Griffith Show. Would have loved to had been able to see it all when it was in its prime, I just saw where Amazon has completey redone the Desilu Culver, all of the old soundstages gone now, but I think they may have saved the bungalows and especially the iconic administration building

The 40 acre lot that was home to Mayberry (outside) was also used in several Star Trek episodes like "Miri" and "City on the Edge of Forever". In fact, in the case of the later episode, there is a scene where William Shatner is walking with Joan Collins down the street and they walk right past Floyd's Barber shop which is still marked "Floyd's Barber Shop". Cool video - thx.

The sheriff and deputy outfits that Andy Griffith and Don Knotts are owned by James Conisar, President and Founder of the Museum of Television. Other things in his collection include Buffalo Bob and Howdy Doody shirts, Johnny Carson's Tonight Show set, and Pamela Anderson's Baywatch outfit.
Recently toured the museum March 2017 and saw the uniform. There is a lifelike statue of Andy and Opie there that is worth seeing if you are close to Mount Airy.

that just makes me sad. why didnt they save anything from the show my gawd ? so really nothing is left. any reunion we saw was sets rebuilt to look like the courthouse and other parts of 'Mayberry'. such an iconic show and cast esp. Andy , love him great actor, wish i couldve met him

Do you happen to know what those boxes were that were at the bottom of the windows in the courthouse? They look like flower pots/planters that people put under their windows, but, being indoors, I never could understand what these might be.
I have often wandered myself. I don't think they are there in the early episodes, it if my believe they were just added for cosmetic purpose, i.e. just dressing up the bottom of the window. It is important to know also that all of the walls were individual panels that are put together to make the set. The wall behind Andy's desk it probably not there most of the time, it is only there when the camera is shooting in that direction. Otherwise, the camera are set up where that wall is to film the interior shots of the courthouse. This was done on a sound stage at Desilu (Cahuenga Blvd.) in Hollywood. The courthouse exterior filmed at 40 acres had no interior, just a facade.
here odd fact about the old sets never know that the shop window were tilt on so not to reflect image of the film crew. watch the TV show and see if you tell?

I know the Adventures of Superman '52-'53 season used 40 Acres Backlot for many of its exterior scenes. Yesterday on METV I was watching the episode titled The Deserted Village, and took note of the Mayberry Courthouse (eight years prior). But there was one scene where it appeared you could see what appeared to be railroad tracks directly behind a house that one of the characters of the show lived in. These tracks were on 40 acres (not some distant shot outside the backlot) and maybe less than 10 feet from the house. The only reason I mention it was that the tracks seem very out of place (by a residential supposedly close to the sea shore) and I was wondering if in fact that scene was filmed on 40 Acres, and if so, just where at. Growing up during all of the 1950s, I enjoy almost everything about the 40 Acres back lot and the shows and movies filmed there, and all the trivia that goes with it. It's sad to me to know it's all gone now.
+1royalpalm At the 40 acres backlot, there were some tracks on the lot, in fact, in TAGs you can see what was the train station past the theater in the background that was used in filming Gone With The Wind
1royalpalm .. in the 1960s there was railroad running parallel on National Blvd north side of the back lot.. now it's part of LA transportation system. .
Jason, in the last episode of The Andy Griffith Show, Andy is at a train station Union Pacific Railroad, do you think this was where they filmed that sequence, it would make sense as it was close to the backlot. There are a couple of other episodes that show tracks in the show
Odd, your posting didn't immediately show up in this thread when I got notification of it. I alluded to it in my last posting where I said you could see the train tracks next to a house in the Deserted Village.
SandhillDigger ... according to the 40 acres layout there was a railroad station on the lot I've never recall seeing it, the carpenters change the sets so quickly accordingly to the director's instructions... when the shot is done they leave...
Nice video. A trick to get into a studio is to call ahead and tell them you're shooting an indy film and want to rent props or wardrobe. Give them your name over the phone for the guard at the gate. You'll pull up to the gate, show your I.D, and you get buzzed in as easy as that. Go on your own tour without a guide. Not that I'd ever do something like that I'm just saying you could.. 😜
Your friend is not alone. There are many who still believe that probably because of the publicity from Mt Airy, NC, Andy's home town. It is where the fans meet every year to celebrate the show, great event....and by the way, they did such a great job of making The Andy Griffith Show, it makes it believable that Mayberry is actually in North Carolina.
When walking down Mayberry in the evening ( as kids we snuck in late.. lol ) it was like the real town, hard to imagine it was only 150ft from the surrounding back lot fence...
I would have loved to been there to sneak in to the lot back in those days! I'll bet it looked a lot smaller in person. You can tell watching the DVD's how the sets were worn pretty badly, I have seen a few photos of the back of the courthouse, awesome view, Last year I was attending a show by Karen Knotts, daughter of Don Knotts and she gave a short description of how the lot looked when she was a kid, noting that it was all mostly facades, etc.
It was quite a large era, since I never hada formal tour the set's kinda blended together.. We liked the western town street it was ⅞ original size and I was taking a photography class at high school. .. The only permanent building as I recall was the large church, they stored lots of props from past filmings there, once in a while we would see some storefront setup for some filmings ... The only shootings at that time ( early 70s ) was Gomer Pyle and Hogans Heroes...

+Jason Kramer I do know that the mansion used in the show at one time could be seen from the gate, but now you can see into the property and there has been extensive renovations, etc. It does not look anything like it did in the 1960's. As far as I know, there is nothing to see of the old sets or sound stages used to film the show.

***** I know for a lot of people this kind of video may not mean much, but for us fans, it is all we have left as we look at these old studios from outside the fence and just think about all of our favorite tv shows that we grew up with knowing --- this is where they were made
SandhillDigger This video you made sure means a lot to me. I grew up with them. In fact I had an absent dad growing up and was taught a lot from Andy. He was a dad to many. I met Ronnie Howard back in the 70s and it was pretty cool. That show was an amazing teaching tool for a young kid like myself. I think of the episodes in many life situations. It is sad that they did not preserve the locations. Would have loved to walk into the Sheriffs office or into Andys house. Thanks again for sharing this with all of us. It meant a lot! :)
So none of the show was filmed in Mt Pilot N C ? Where was the lake with the pine trees surrounding it filmed at,? many scenes by that lake, including the intro?

I was under the impression that the 40 acres was right next to the Sony studios in culver city. And that Sony use to be MGM studios and before that desilu. Am I way off?
It get kind of confusing to try to trace the studios sometimes. The exterior shots for TAGS was filmed at the 40 Acres backlot however the soundstages that were used were #1 & #2 at the Desilu Studios at Cahuenga. Franklin Canyon was also used a good deal for the woodsy scenes at"Lake Myers". At the time Desilu owned the properties they also had studios at Gower which is now Paramount and in Culver City. You would think that the interiors would have been shot at Culver City, but I guess the Cahuenga studios were better set up of tv shows at the time, the sets for TAGs were in place there for eight years. It is an interesting story altogether, you can see some pretty good information on the timelines on the studio websites for Sony, Paramount, etc.

On Star Trek, the original Series, the episode, City on the Edge of Forever, the scene when Kirk had to let Edith Keeler get run over by a vehicle, in the background is Floyd's Fix It shop store front.
After Desilu, it was Renmar. I don't know them all but Monk was one of them. Thank you and I apologize for the delayed response. Those were located on the backlot in Culver City, called the 40 Acres Back Lot, but it is all gone since 1976 when the property was sold and bulldozed. On the floor plan of Red Studios, it looks like studio 5 is where you were talking about stage 9. Did they change the numbers on the studios? www.redstudio.com/images/lotmap/Studio%20Lot%20Map%202012.pdf
+Don Brown Yes they did renumber the stages. I believe back in the Desilu era, they had 30 something stages in their holdings, I am pretty sure that was how the original numbers were given at that time. I read once that since that location did not have a backlot, it was perfect for filming sitcomes where they could add live audiences, however, we know for a fact that Andy Griffith Show never used live audiences, they used a single camera to film the episodes, just like making a movie as it was done during that time.

A few years back I as well ask the guard if I could take a peak at the sound stage....his answer was "Absolutely Not",,,,, Andy Griffith stated that during some lean years that this soundstage became a warehouse for furniture and a indoor tennis court for a while.
Thanks for watching, hope you will subscribe if you have not already, recent content as been added to channel and more on the way ! Sorry for the long delay to respond, I kind of got away from checking for the comments for a while, did not realize I had so many responses. Thank you!
Roger Steinbrink Had to go back to the edit, did not know the name of the music, but anyway it is "Wake Up Lisa" by Mary Greig.....it is a soundtrack furnished by TH-cam. I just picked it out cause I liked the sound of it myself, was not really paying attention to the name of it, etc. Glad you like it, Thanks for the comment
+Jason Kramer I am not 100 per cent sure, but I then to think this might have been filmed either on Higerua St or W Jefferson Blvd right outside the 40 acres back lot
This was a really cool video, thanks for sharing. I love The Andy Griffith Show too. Anyway, when you mentioned Who Framed Roger Rabbit, I just watched that movie about a month ago, pretty good movie and when you were showing Red Studios, I thought it looked awfully familiar. Now, I know. Wasn't that studio called ACME Studios for the movie? I think they even shot the inside parts of Who Framed Roger Rabbit in there, like when the detectives were investigating the crime scene and when Judge Doom captured Jessica and the detective, I forget his name already. The one that was protecting Roger. I laughed so hard seeing Christopher Lloyd as the bad guy, when i think of him, I think of Jim on Taxi, Doc in Back to the Future and Al in Angels In the Outfield, all good guys. Plus Red Studios would have been the place where they shot I Love Lucy and many other shows.
Star Trek sound stages were located ovet at Desilu at Gower. That is not part of Paramount. When you go on the studio tours they usually mention the filming of Star Trek on the lot. There was however, at least one episode of Star Trek, maybe two that were filmed on the 40 acres back lot, somewhere in these threads someone has named the episodes
Wow I always thought Andy Griffith show was filmed down the street where I lived in Culver City at Culver City Studios. It used to be RKO and then Desi Lu. There’s a mural of Lucy an Desi on one of the buildings there in Culver City. Maybe they filmed some scenes there. I know they filmed a Star Trek show there. Lucy owned some of those shows.
Desilu had three locations, Desilu Gower in Hollywood, Desilu Cahuenga in Hollywood, and Desilu Culver. The old 40 acres back lot in Culver City is where the exteriors were filmed. At Cahuenga, duplicate sets of court house etc. were built for interiors shots.
all of the bungalow houses on Lillian Way are gone now, a parking lot took their place. Thank you , and sorry for the long delay in getting my response posted, kind of got of the wagon for a while , but now I am trying to catch up and just wanted you to know, new content is being added to the channel. Thank you, and hope you will subscribe if you have not already.
Thanks for watching, hope you will subscribe if you have not already, recent content as been added to channel and more on the way ! Sorry for the long delay to respond, I kind of got away from checking for the comments for a while, did not realize I had so many responses. Thank you!
What happened to all the (interior) sets? Did they end up in some desert landfill or are they collecting dust somewhere in an old warehouse? Thanks for a great video.
The only things that I know of that survived for sure are some items that Andy Griffith himself kept such as a set of the signs from the court house door {Sheriff and Justice of the Peace} his desk and some of the stuff that was on it such as the Eagle and the pen set, the small mallet, etc. He gave them all to a very close friend named Emmet Forrest and fortunately Emmette gave everything to the Andy Griffith Museum in Mt Airey, NC www.andygriffithmuseum.com/ . It is a wonderful place to visit and see a small collection of things there from the show! I am pretty sure the old sets such as the jail an all of the interior sets are long gone to the landfill or recycled.
in 1975 as a kid we would jump the studio fence and walk around on the outside grounds. I Saw were they filmed TV shows, Batman, were the batmobile drove down, saw Gomer Pyle Quonset huts, Combat TV show filming area and saw Hogan hero's show area too It was neat I saw the original tree stump were Hogan's men would come out of from the prison camp. My last time jumping the fence into the studio back lot I decided to go pull out that tree stump as a souvenir but I was too late someone else took it before me, Bummer. I got the see the demo crew sadly, they bulldozed down that back lot flat. The lot was replace by condo homes on that site in Culver city California.. Very sad indeed. They should have saved the studio lot as a historical lot or should have taken the props and sold them to the public instead of smashing them all up.
+JokeyPismo The Clown Thank you for sharing this Joey. It is exciting to hear personal experiences like this. Did you get any photos taken on your excursions on the lot? If so, I would love see them !
+old64goat some of the real early years of Gunsmoke were filmed on Gene Autry's Lot at Melody Ranch. The later years were filmed on a sound stage. You can tell the outdoor locations easy enough by the daylight and back gounds.
Thank you for bringing back some wonderful memories from childhood. I was curious about a location in Season 8 (Aunt Bee's Big Moment) in which she takes flying lessons. I was wondering if the airport used in the shooting of the episode was Van Nuys or another small airport in LA or the San Fernando Valley. Thanks for any information about this episode's location.
Aunt Bee's plane was flown at Whiteman Airport ( www.google.com/maps/place/Whiteman+Airport/@34.2598054,-118.4119289,15z/data=!4m5!3m4!1s0x0:0x13154eabf70b4b93!8m2!3d34.2598054!4d-118.4119289) it was a rental airplane at the time. It still exist and in privately owned. Thanks for watching, hope you will subscribe if you have not already, recent content as been added to channel and more on the way ! Sorry for the long delay to respond, I kind of got away from checking for the comments for a while, did not realize I had so many responses. Thank you!
You showed the studio where "Gomer Pyle" was filmed but it seems like a lot of that show was filmed outside around marine huts. Where was that location? It was obviously outdoors.
The exteriors were filmed at 40 acres backlot which was Desilu at the time. Before that it was Pathe, RKO, etc. I do remember one episode were Gomer is walking down the sidewalk outside of the studio where the Boys Club is located
Thank you so much. What are they shooting there now? I was at 40 acres and the Burbank studios ( where RFD was filmed in its last year). I loved back lots so very much. I can tell you about it. It was run down.
I can only imagine...I have seen photos of the last days and it did look pretty much trashed, especially after the last couple of productions. The day I was there to shoot this video, there was some production going on in one of the new sound stages, I think the guard told me it was a Showtime production, but I can't remember what it was. I think he also said they had or were also doing Hell's Kitchen.
40 acres- very old...run down...plywood flats...black cloths stapled over windows ripped blowing in the wind...stone face, brick face, chucks broken off laying around...streets all dirt...some broken cement near side walks, slabs...small area, not very big at all...behind streets overgrown weeds all over....one long dirt/gravel road runs along side...at end is the are of hogans heroes, gomer pile USMC. very small beat huts...one old one larger...some small buildings...who would have known that this was where part of Gone With The Wind, Real McCoys, Superman was filmed? The other side of the streets in Mayberry were more store fronts painted mostly brown, cheap enamel paint, some tan...not too good... lots of rot to wood and wood trim....
Don Diego Vega Hey Don, did you ever explore behind the facades? I know the facades were basically exteriors, but it appears that at least a couple of the buildings might have had a room built in a box behind the main doors? Such as the courthouse...there was at least one episode of Andy Griffith where Andy looked out of the window with the camera to his back and you could tell this was a shot from the 40 acres location and one other where their was a view from the inside of the set used for the diner where you could actually see the street people walking by outside the window. Oh yeah in one historical view showing the sets, you can see a large boat sitting right behind the courthouse facade...any idea what that old boat was used in? Do you happen to have any photos personally taken by your self on the old 40?
No photos....yes, I have seen those shots...but my basic memory was that the place was like 60 years old at the time and was a mess. I saw Warner's and others...This was in the 70s. But that poor place was like it hadn't been cared for at all. Lots of tall grass and weeds.... I don't know about a boat. I know that the fronts were made of what looked like plywood and some just had sides which were maybe, 8 feetwide...no interior.... the building areas were very small...they look large on film. But MGMs were made the best and were the least useful. They made them like real streets. It's the angles and different fronts that make them work well in film. I liked warners the best. It was called the Burbank Studios at that time.
+SandhillDigger in the episode, Goober Takes A Car Apart, there appears to be a scene that was filmed outside on Lillian also. It's the scene where Gilly stops to pick up Goober, and has a short conversation with him. Also notice in the scene it's shot with the houses in the background behind both Gilly and Goober. Because if they shot from both angles, the studio would have been seen in the background. So it appears they had the actors filmed in front of the homes separately. What do you think?
+chuckfan1 Look the video at 1:50, this is a screen shot of what your are talking about. I have labeled the house on the right 830 Lillian Way, that was the exterior for Thelma Lou's house..at 1:44 you see the black sign left from Renmar Studios, that is the parking lot where the houses once stood. If you are looking at this sign in person, the studio is directly behind you with the rear entrance. A few weeks ago I met Clint Howard and Bruce Bilson. Bruce was an assistant director on the show for a few years. He said the Howards lived in a house right next to the studio during the days TAGS was being filmed and that he could send for Ronnie at anytime when he was needed to come over for a filming session. That house is still there , but is now being used as a commercial building in the film industry. To answer your last question, if the cameras had be located on the other side of the street filming Goober and Gilly, you would have definitely seen the studio behind hem.
+SandhillDigger yes of course, in the video there is the scene. If you watch the episode again, that scene, the same houses are behind both Gilly and Goober throughout the scene. You can match them up. Right when the scene starts Goober is walking. The porch, windows, and plants are the same. So since Gilly was out in the street, that means his scenes were actually shot across the street, right outside the doors of the studio, at the curb. Meaning as the camera is facing Gilly, and Gilly is talking, if the camera were to swing around, it would literally be a couple feet from the studio. And when the camera is facing Goober, if the camera were to swing around, it would be looking across the street at the studio, the same spot,
I loved AG show wonderful actors to. I'am 66 yrs old and I'am happy I was a baby watching AG back in the day I remember AG on TV I was 6 yrs old. I remember the man whistling on the intro and my dog would howl. so funny. but I know AG show started in 1960 I think but I was to young to remember much at that age I was 3 yrs old but by the time I was 4 or 5 I remember the show then. but thankyou for this tour of the sets.
thanks for watching and leaving a comment.
I still watch the Andy Griffith Show every day. This show is precious ......I love how GOD is honored and families looked out for each other. My favorite girlfriend for Andy was Peggy. They should have signed her ......she added beauty and great personality .........she was perfect for Andy. And she sang like an angel.
thanks for watching, please like and subscribe
Thank you so much for doing this. I look back with fond memories to the 60's when I was a young boy, and how much I enjoyed watching the Andy Griffith show. I wish they would produce good wholesome shows today like they did then. Thank you.

I still love Andy Griffith. The situations are timeless.
@@cn9630 this is great information! Know I want to visit it!

Of course I think I've seen every show a handful of times already, I'm currently watching them all (several a day) on Netflix. I believe they've uploaded every season. This show never gets old, and I doubt it ever will. Great family entertainment.

One thing that always strikes me about these old movie locations, is most are much smaller than I ever imagined.

They did an interview show with Opie and Andie at that location back in the late 80s, or early90s. Posted somewhere on here.
Thank you very much indeed.
You are very welcome. I appreciate you watching and leaving a comment. I hope you will consider subscribing to my channel and sharing my videos !

Can you tell me what the book is called?
Andy and Don
I really enjoyed watching this, Great job! I'm heading to Mt Airy NC next month to visit and tour all the attractions including the Andy Griffith museum and Snappy Lunch. Whether it's full episodes or TH-cam clips I'm always watching the Andy Griffith show. It's just the greatest ever!!

First class presentation, really good trivia and details. Well done!
+Steven Elief Thank You, glad you enjoyed it !
Thanks for watching
I watch 1 or 2 episodes most every night. So different than the stuff Hollywood puts out today.
steve burgamy
And its allot better too.
steve burgamy Yes the shows today the entire family can't watch. Language etc. I go back in time to a safer place and watch Andy Barney and the town of Mayberry. What a great time it was.
steve - me, too! It is great to watch before bedtime... leaves me with a good feeling. I often fall asleep to the show, streaming from Netflix.
Steve I do agree with you today's comedy is too sanitized and PC that to me its not funny at all. I don,t even go to movies anymore. The comedy sitcoms today are not that funny. I don,t even watch them.
A fine fine job sir...Thank You Kindly!...Jimmie~*~

This was wonderful and very informative, great video.
+SandhillDigger I also wonder what property was used for exterior shots of the original
"Steve Douglas" house (in "Bryant Park") in the first five seasons (on ABC) of "My Three Sons?" That series was also shot at Desilu, even though it was a Don Fedderson Production.
It is almost legend at this point there was no love lost between Frawley and Vance, who portrayed what were perhaps television's most well-known neighbors, "Fred & Ethel Mertz," in "I Love Lucy."
And Vance herself is also probably TV's most popular second banana, in a close competition with Art Carney ( "Ed Norton" in "The Honeymooners"), Don Knotts ("Barney Fife" in "The Andy Griffith Show"), Mary Tyler Moore ("Laura Petrie" in "The Dick Van Dyke Show"), and Jean Stapleton ("Edith Bunker" in"All in the Family"). Although, perhaps Moore and Stapleton don't really qualify as "second bananas," since each was really almost equal to her respective TV spouse, Van Dyke's "Rob Petrie" and Carroll O'Connor's "Archie Bunker."
But I really think one has to give it to Vance, since she co-starred in two of Lucille Ball's series'.
Interesting. Thanks for putting this on TH-cam.

More fun trivia. The Mayberry set was also the set for the old Superman series. They just kept the camera angles low to avoid seeing skyscrapers.
Amazing :)

Lived next to Desilu in Culver City. . use to sneak in the back lot all the time in the 70s.. Hogans Hero's and Gomer Pile was still filming,
No one mentioned the artificial lake across La Ballona creek. . all gone :(
Do you know what Stage Ben Casey was filmed? Thanks.
I grew up with these shows.

They have the real uniforms worn by Andy and Barney in the Andy Griffith museum in Mt. Airy NC.
Recently toured the museum March 2017 and saw the uniform. There is a lifelike statue of Andy and Opie there that is worth seeing if you are close to Mount Airy.

Buster Keaton`s studio was at nearby 1025 Lillian Way.A lot of his classic movies from the 1920s` were filmed in that area.

that just makes me sad. why didnt they save anything from the show my gawd ? so really nothing is left. any reunion we saw was sets rebuilt to look like the courthouse and other parts of 'Mayberry'. such an iconic show and cast esp. Andy , love him great actor, wish i couldve met him
Thanks , we are fortunate that the series stills runs today and we have the DVD's a great show
Thanks! Very interesting.

Thanks for watching...Never thought of that, will keep this in mind for the future! :)
A friend of mine would not believe me when I told him the AG show was filmed in Hollywood. He believes it was filmed in North Carolina on location.
It was actually filmed in Hollywood....at DESILU studios. Just for the record.
Man, it sure is sad that there ain't no more AG sets

Thanks do you know where the beverly hills billies was filmed at iam going to L.A. in sept
+Jason Kramer I do know that the mansion used in the show at one time could be seen from the gate, but now you can see into the property and there has been extensive renovations, etc. It does not look anything like it did in the 1960's. As far as I know, there is nothing to see of the old sets or sound stages used to film the show.
We any of the streets in "Mayberry" paved? Seemed all cars and trucks in the town kicked up a bunch of dust when they drove the streets.

that was awesome!! thanks. so sad they didnt preserve it. I would have loved to see it.
All filmed in and around Hollywood Thank you , and sorry for the long delay in getting my response posted, kind of got of the wagon for a while , but now I am trying to catch up and just wanted you to know, new content is being added to the channel.
It is an interesting story altogether, you can see some pretty good information on the timelines on the studio websites for Sony, Paramount, etc.
well done

On Star Trek, the original Series, the episode, City on the Edge of Forever, the scene when Kirk had to let Edith Keeler get run over by a vehicle, in the background is Floyd's Fix It shop store front.
Randy Cable, Floyd's Barber Shop. After that character left to show it became Emmett's Fix It Shop.

Where's the Mayberry hotel, the post office and Wally's Service Station? The Church also?
+SandhillDigger It was still nice knowing the original locations that they were filmed in. I have enjoyed all of your videos.
very sad they got rid of all those settings it would of been great to go see that's when life was a lot better.

A few years back I as well ask the guard if I could take a peak at the sound stage....his answer was "Absolutely Not",,,,, Andy Griffith stated that during some lean years that this soundstage became a warehouse for furniture and a indoor tennis court for a while.
+Anthony Richard That is what I read too, also it even housed some indoor tennis courts at one time
Good one

The background music is great. Who is it?
I heard a riff from "Gasoline Alley", "Can't Find My Way Home", etc.
Yes, I enjoyed it immensely. Thanks.
interesting video but it was repetitive after 90 seconds. on a high note where can i get that killer sound track?
BD G The music is Wake Up Lisa/Mary Greig -
Doug Cox, picked it from TH-cam music in the editing
Where was check point chickie filmed one of my all time favorite sences
Also I Spy !
SandhillDigger What about I Spy? Shot the movie at this place or was Christopher Lloyd in it?
I Spy, the old TV series, not the movie
The old TV show I Spy - with Bill Cosby
SandhillDigger Oh, I see! I wasn't too sure, thanks!
Desilu also filmed the original Star Trek series, do you know if those episodes were filmed there in those buildings?
Awesome lived there played there. Almost died there.
mike Hughes .. same here.!

Were the Desilu Studios before that RKO?
RKO was earlier. I think Desilu came in the late 50's.
World Famous Only on TH-cam LM l
Thanks for the tour, I still watch reruns of theat dhow.
I have a question, was Dodge City Front St. of "Gunsmoke" filmed on that back lot?
+old64goat some of the real early years of Gunsmoke were filmed on Gene Autry's Lot at Melody Ranch. The later years were filmed on a sound stage. You can tell the outdoor locations easy enough by the daylight and back gounds.
Yes and I can tell by the voices, they sounded like they were inside.
Do you know if the Gunsmoke "set" is still around?
Don Diego Vega
Hey Don, did you ever explore behind the facades?
Thanks for sharing😊
+journalgirrl Thank you for viewing !
And when the camera is facing Goober, if the camera were to swing around, it would be looking across the street at the studio, the same spot,
you've got it
I could have sworn I read (somewhere) that Andy Griffith was filmed on location in Kingman Arizona... I guess not.
40 Acres in Culver City for exteriors, Desilu Cahuenga for interiors, Franklin Canyon Reservoir for Myery Lake....all in Los Angeles area
Thanks Sandhilldigger..your comment is much appreciated.
