This is why blind tests are a must. Too many people are influenced by knowing what the house/designer is. Strip that away and they give their honest opinions.
A lot of niche fragrances are rated "great" simply off the reputation of the house or how expensive they are. Experts are always hesitant to speak negatively of them. A layman will be honest.
