The Wreck of I-14 - Japan's Forgotten Super Submarine

- If you ask someone to name a 'Japanese super submarine' you'll probably get I-400. Those boats are the most famous. And with good reason.
But, they were preceded by I-13 and I-14. And the latter of those two is the topic of today's video. The fourth major Japanese submarine wreck off Hawaii that we've looked at. And, as it turns out, the final one. I-14 is the least surveyed of the bunch.
Even so, there are interesting bits to this wreck. Namely the overall preservation and the unique features of the design.

Belatedly put the link to the old video in the description. I blame being literally sick and tired for forgetting that.
I have a question sir, when the USS HARDER was found is there ANY footage or was it just a few still shots released last May 2024?
That is so interesting to see ships and subs that i have heard little to nothing about before. That be a rough way to spend your days assigned to a sub.
Thank you for bringing all these boats to our attention
Wouldn't catch me on a grey funnel line target
Another great video. Thank you!
Brilliant video thank you , very interesting 👍🇬🇧
Another great video. The hard work on you put into your videos is very much appreciated. I didn't notice anything wrong with your voice.

Thank you !! Good day, God bless ! Hope ya voice feels better lol
My grandfather was on the prize crew. He always claimed it was a sketchy vessel and they didn't wanna dive it. I also recall him saying the radio was pretty rudimentary.
There are about 20 UBoats sitting at the bottom of Portsmouth, NH.
I've always found it hard to wrap my head around, despite being around Japanese pronunciations frequently, is that "I-14" is pronounced "E"-14, not "eye"-14.
How deep it lays down?
Odd thing. It never struck me that subs had anchors!
I'm pretty sure that the new ones don't have them! I was in a drydock with my ship and a nuclear sub and I never seen one!!!
One of the pictures taken at the wreck of the USS Thresher (SSN 593) show one of the boat's mushroom anchors, so they existed into the era of the early nukes.
voice tube on a submarine how did that work
I wonder if it's just like using a faucet, opening a valve to speak but closing it if you are going to dive.
All submarines have voice pipes directly connected to the helmsman the Voice pipe is sealed via a voice pipe cock on the bridge and also has a levered cock inside the pressure hull above the helmsman we would have to have a bucket over the lower end when the surfacing officer of the watch would open the upper cock. as sometimes the system leaked and the whole tube would be full up with water resulting in a wet helmsman and water going over the one man control system
@@XOsubmariner ok thanks for that info i was on a gearing class DD
@waynekoepke8128 no bother shipmate ,👍 had a few of those gearing classes in the crosshairs of our periscopes
@@XOsubmariner look out for the ASROC looking for you dont worry about the DASH they crashed or flue away
If it was scuttled why did it break in 2 ?
It likely took a torpedo somewhere aft of the conning tower which compromised its structural integrity and broke apart on the way down. Most, if not all of the captured subs sunk in the area were torpedoed to sink them
You arrow is on the third tube…
Any chance the missing propellers were good enough that the U.S. wanted to study them further?
Made from brass.
Removed because of scrap valve
gaping maw
