One of my most memorable arcade experiences is walking by the machine and seeing Cyclops shaking hands with Ryu and it blowing my mind that they were in a game together.
Can I just share? 😊 Year is 1994 in the Philippines, I have P50 ($1 now). I walk 30 minutes to the mall from our house and go straight to the arcades to buy token and play Marvel vs Street fighter. After playing, I buy chips and zunkist (orange tetra pak) and sit on the stairs and eat. These are one of the best moments in my life. Man the 90s are just something else. Have a nice day ahead and thanks for reading 😊
The year has to be 1997-1998 that is the year Marvel super heroes vs street fighter came out. I remember being there when it got unloaded and set up at the arcade, was cool!
It's hard just to get a few people to all agree to play the same game nowadays. People have become so close minded they only want to play their personal little niche ad nauseum.
The idea that arcades had "real" friends while online friends aren't real doesn't really make sense to me. Online games are about connecting people and having fun, just like arcades used to be. The shift from arcade or couch co-op to online gaming is more about how the gaming industry has changed, not about younger generations not valuing real friendships. Today, games are more immersive and detailed than ever. More kids are playing games now than back then, when they were often considered nerds or geeks. Gaming culture has become more accepted, and online gaming has broken down the stigma of who plays and who you can play with. Just like random people in arcades would approach you to chat or play, online games have made that easier. Yes, the focus has been on online games for a while, but that’s already shifting back to single-player experiences as online games have become oversaturated. Couch coop games do still exist, but they are mostly in the form of Nintendo games (old and new). I even know people who made lifelong friends through online gaming and later met up in person. As cringey as that might sound, those connections are just as real and meaningful as playing with friends at an arcade. Also, I am happy that as a kid, I was able to play games with friends for extended periods of time without my parents knowing, and I got to do that thanks to online games. That's how you make friends as a gamer-- you asked if someone owns a console and what their gamertag is! Btw I'm in my mid-twenties

Those drawbacks don't make sense. You're playing these games because you're a fan of the characters and want to play them, how dated any of the games is doesn't matter because each game is the only place to get that specific experience of those heroes fighting those enemies. Technical differences don't matter if the games are also thematically different. Nobody is grabbing this collection purely because they want a competent retro fighter, they're grabbing it because they're a fan of at least 3-4 of the included games if not even all of them.

8 is for very good games, ones that set out to do something specific and manage to more or less achieve their goals. They might have issues, but usually they are minor and do not effect your enjoyment of the game. All in all it's a safe bet you'll enjoy the game if you enjoy other games like it, but it won't necessary interest you if you dislike the genre. 9 is for games that go beyond the established standards and achieve more than expected.
