Thank you for reacting to TVXQ, the true legends of kpop!!! They are so underrated nowadays and its a massive, massive shame. They have far too much talent to be overlooked.

@m-chan4311 thank you for watching! I didn't get to see/know them in their heyday but they really are quite amazing. It's a shame they're so underrated these days. Glad I got a chance to listen to them through this channel!

Not only is TVXQ an SM group, so amazing vocals are a given, but they were originally supposed to be an acapella group, so they are known for having superior harmonies and vocals. (In the early days -- 2003-09 when they were a 5-member group -- they actually had a lot of acapella performances that really showed off their vocal abilities.) Also, any of those songs that were released before 2010 were originally with all 5 members, so, for example, just wait until you see and hear "Tonight", "Purple Line" and "Love In The Ice" sang live with all 5 members in the song. :D (They have been a duo for 14 years now, way longer than they ever were a 5 member group.)
"Down" is their pre-release MV and "Rebel" is their lead MV from their 9th full-length Korean album, 20&2 -- 20 years and still 2 members strong -- which is a celebration of their 20th anniversary on Dec. 26, 2023. "Rebel" was the whole reason why they were on Killing Voice in order to promote their comeback and their 20th anniversary.
Although their debut song "Hug" was released at the beginning of 2004, they officially debuted the day after Christmas in 2003, so that is why their most recent comeback was in celebration of their 20th anniversary. (Changmin, the youngest member, was only 15 in this MV and U-know was 17.)
They're "Rising Gods of the East" for a reason. Even after more than 20 years they are still continuing to break new ground and demonstrate why they are the leaders in the industry.
If you haven't yet, check out their 2023 MAMA performance where they showcased "Down" even before the MV was released. They also had an epic collaboration stage with SM's newest boy group RIIZE, where they performed "Rising Sun."
"Rising Sun" is a classic and a lot of artist and groups have covered the song over the years. Plus, it's used in a lot of things, so you'll probably start to notice it being used in things you watch. And it's one of those songs that defines who TVXQ are so, when you talk about them or they perform anywhere they usually play this song. "Rising Sun" came out in 2005 about a month before Super Junior debuted with their song "Twins (Knock Out)", the hard rock, grunge vibe was just the style of music that SM and the Kpop industry was playing around with back then. The whole song, MV and members' style was very on trend. Therefore, it has a sound and feel to it like a lot of songs that were released around this time.
And yes, those are 100% the real lyrics in "Purple Line." If I remember correctly, Changmin wasn't the original member to sing "I really want to touch myself," put those are just some of the iconic English lines you got in Kpop songs back then. I think the line was originally supposed to be something like "I really want to get in touch with myself," but when SM recorded it, they thought it sounded better the way you heard it, even though everyone questioned leaving it that way when they first read the lyrics. It sounds more scandalous in English than I think the Korean public views it. It's one of those English lines in older Kpop songs that sort of gets lost in translation and is more about the way it sounds in the song than what it really means.
"Chance of Love" in 2018 not only was a big deal because it was celebrating their 15th anniversary, but it also was their first comeback after being discharged from the military, so the Kpop industry was ready and waiting for them to release a new album.
"Love Line," is also part of their Chapter No. 1: The Chance of Love album, and "Truth," is part of their follow up/repackaged album Chapter No. 2: The Truth of Love, which both also have MVs.
As you saw, "Keep Your Head Down" was released at the beginning of 2011. It was their first comeback after splitting with the other members, and it's the performance that solidified them as two of the top artists in the industry. This song showed everyone just how capable they were as artists -- that they could continue as just the two of them and never miss a beat. "Keep Your Head Down" is talking about being able to back up everything they say and do with their talent -- i.e. "keep your head down" and don't show off unless you have the talent and ability to back it up, etc.
What you saw U-Know doing at the beginning of "Catch Me" was not "his running motion," but it was an iconic part of the choreography for the song. Almost all of these songs have epic dances that go along with them, so you see them mimicking the choreography. (TVXQ are known for their dancing, so they rarely perform these songs without the choreography that goes with the song. Therefore, it comes natural to them, especially U-Know, to want to dance while they sing.)
"Something" is all big band based, and it becomes even more prominent when you see the MV. This was their comeback in celebration of their 10th anniversary. Their live choreography for this song is really impressive as well.
"Mirotic" (pronounced like the words mirror and errotic = mir-otic -- it's derived from a play on words Miro + tic -- "Miro," (Milo) in Korean means Maze, but they thought the word sounded cooler if you added tic to the end of the word.) is literally one of their most popular and iconic songs, and it's one of those songs that EVERY trainee learns and all rookie groups perform at least once in their career.
If you want to hear the full song of any of these songs all you have to do is look them up, TVXQ has been holding concerts for almost 20 years, so they have sang all these songs live multiple times. Plus, most of these songs have MVs that go with them.
Here is some background to help you understand the dynamics of TVXQ better. TVXQ (English and Chinese)/DBSK (Korean)/ Tohoshinki (Japanese), which each are the abbreviations/acronyms of the words in each language that translates to mean "Rising Gods of the East," debuted as part of second generation with 5 member. But, in 2010 three of their members left SM Entertainment and the group and formed a new group called JYJ -- the initials of the members: Junsu, Yoochun and Jaejoong. (Up until recently, JYJ was still a group and they still produced music, but because they left SM Entertainment -- one of the most powerful and influential companies in the industry -- on less than ideal terms, it has made it more difficult for them to promote themselves and their music. So the members of JYJ are more known as actors and producers than they are as singers now.)
However, Max/Changmin and U-Know/Yunho continued as TVXQ as a duo. As you can see, even now with only two of them, they are so talented that they have the vocal range to cover all the parts of a song, including rap.
Although they are one of the senior Kpop groups, Changmin is currently only 36 and U-Know is 38. TVXQ is SM's most senior group that is still active, but U-Know and Changmin are still younger than, or the same age as, many of the members of the legendary groups who came after them within their generation.
As you heard, Changmin is known for his powerful high notes -- even more powerful than Onew or Jonghyun from SHINee or Chen and Baekhyun from EXO, all top vocalists -- he literally has one of the widest note ranges of almost any Kpop artist. In a high note battle he always wins.
It wouldn't be a TVXQ/Changmin song if we didn't get to hear at least one unbelievable high note from him. (Fun fact: Changmin got married in 2020 and he became a father to a boy in 2022.)
U-Know is the main rapper and a vocalist of the group, and he is known for his passion and intensity. There is almost no one in the Kpop industry that is more passionate than him when it comes to singing and dancing, and believe it or not, he rachetes it up even more when he is performing live. Just like SHINee's Minho is nicknamed "Flaming Charisma" because of his passion for sports and games and life in general -- well it's a running joke in the Kpop industry that Minho, U-Know and Siwon from Super Junior make up the holy trinity of passion within SM -- they are so convicted and intense that if they hang out together no one can compete with them. LOL ;)
Also U-Know was/is the main dancer of TVXQ and he is known for his dancing. He is considered one of the top dancers in Kpop, so dance breaks are his thing, which is why his parts are often so dance-centric. The more you get into TVXQ and U-know, you will see that intense, powerful dance moves are what he does. If a normal dancer puts 110% into a dance move, U-know uses 200%.
Just wait until you see the choreography for these songs, they can do all this while dancing and singing live.
Tohoshinki (TVXQ) are one of the most famous singers in Japan as well, even among Japanese artists. Over the years, I think they have probably spent more time promoting and touring in Japan than they have in Korea, so they are megastars in Japan. And like SHINee and BoA, etc., they are so popular in Japan that they are considered part of the mainstream music scene and they are fluent in Japanese. TVXQ has one of the biggest worldwide fan bases and they sell out some of the largest concert venues in the world. They are one of SM Entertainment's top selling groups, easily selling out concert tours around the world.
TVXQ's fandom is Cassiopeia and their fan color is pearl red -- which is why you will see one of the primary colors in most of TVXQ's MVs is red -- and when you attend a TVXQ concert you will see an ocean of red. Welcome to the Cassiopeia fandom. (Their fandom is named after the 5-starred constellation, Cassiopeia, because they originally were 5 members who were supposed to be gods who came from the stars.) If you like TVXQ then you are a Cassi. (In Japan their fans are called BigEast because Tohoshinki are Gods of the East and they have one of the largest fandoms.)

Thank you so much for watching! Wow that's a lot of really cool info :D I had no idea they were originally supposed to be an acapella group; that's awesome and I can totally see it!
If Rising Sun is in a lot of things I will have to take a listen to that so I can point it out in the future for sure!
ROFL those are the real lyrics?! HAHAHA. Yea the "get in touch with myself" would have been better but who knows...maybe they knew how freaky the internet would get in the future and were just making a song that could cross time and space to fit with people these days XD
I had no idea they had other names based on the language that is talking about them. I mean I guess it makes sense but I never would have expected that. I figured a group just has their name and the language accommodates it. Pretty cool.
Yea Changmin's range is crazy! Congrats to him on the new family too :D

TVXQ used to be five memebers group, they debut as acapella dance group,December last year was their debut 20th anniversary.
The person on the left is Changmin and the other one is Yunho,TVXQ was split in 2009,the three members who left group were Jaejoong,Yuchun and Junsu, they form a group call JYJ,JYJ members are all active as soloist right now.
Mirotic is TVXQ's most popular song and one of most iconic songs in Kpop,Mirotic probably the most covered song in Kpop as well.
Rebel is title track of their debut 20th anniversary album.

Yunho (black jacket) is the one who sang the bass parts when they were 5 members. He had to upgrade his vocal skills when they became 2 members because his greatest strength was his dancing (he was/is considered one the best dancers in South Korea). Likewise, Changmin really had to improve his dancing skills because he was mostly known for his incredibly powerful high notes (for real, Changmin is just chilling in this Killing Voice; he's not really pushing himself at all). Oh and btw, if you're interested in a group that does have that wide vocal range, from bass to high tenor, then maybe check out SB19 from the Philippines. They do the hype rapping/dance song thing, but also do ballads with full 5-part harmonies.

    • @JeffReacts12

Oh wow, that makes sense though that they'd have their specialties but have to improve in other areas to make up for the losses. I have a couple requests in now for them when they were 5 members so I'll be curious to see just how much different they sounded! Thanks for watching and for the info!

If I may suggest some songs, I would like to recommend you check out the MVs for Tonight (a freaking vocal showcase between the five members), Mirotic, Hug, Rising Sun, Keep Your Head Down and Down.
