I lived in Ipswich for years, and there are lots of stories that go around about the rampage of Matthew Hopkins. Aldeburgh's museum has some great stuff.

A sign of the times that Witch hunts are described here as misogynistic rather than understanding that witchcraft was simply associated with women. It's no more legitimate to claim it was misogyny than it is legitimate to claim that cats being considered familiars was anti-feline.
Cats were actually not seen as linked to Withes. While it is True that a Cat could be seen as a Witches Familiar, at the Tie any Animal could have been. Cats were not special or the most common, really. Linking Cats to Witchcraft is more of a 19th Century idea.

Despite excruciating geographical, historical, and pronunciation errors, and serious continuity problems - and I say this as an indigenous native of Suffolk - despite all this I am glad that it has been given an airing. Several books give a much better take on the story. The film is only good for its horror, actors, and beautiful scenery. Thank you for highlighting this horrific and much misunderstood period of English history.
Thoroughly enjoyed this account of a piece of history that is practically on my doorstep! I can reach both St. Osyth and Bury St. Edmunds within an hour. More local histories please!
Another English Civil War personality who would make for an interesting topic would be Anthony Payne, The Cornish Giant. Over seven feet tall, Manservant and Bodyguard to the Grenville family, there are some great stories about the man and he remains something of a local legend around the small Cornish village of Stratton to this day.

Cats were actually not seen as linked to Withes. While it is True that a Cat could be seen as a Witches Familiar, at the Tie any Animal could have been. Cats were not special or the most common, really. Linking Cats to Witchcraft is more of a 19th Century idea.

Puritan's were the worst, with how women were seen, and the belief in witchcraft! I'm a descendant of one of the victims in Salem, hung for being a "Witch"....She was an old widow, who owned a lot of property, and was very outspoken, which made her a perfect target.

Despite excruciating geographical, historical, and pronunciation errors, and serious continuity problems - and I say this as an indigenous native of Suffolk - despite all this I am glad that it has been given an airing. Several books give a much better take on the story. The film is only good for its horror, actors, and beautiful scenery. Thank you for highlighting this horrific and much misunderstood period of English history.

Over seven feet tall, Manservant and Bodyguard to the Grenville family, there are some great stories about the man and he remains something of a local legend around the small Cornish village of Stratton to this day.

Because we could also say people were acting like the good Christians they were when they founded the first hospitals, charities, and universities, or when they started the abolitionist movements to end slavery in the west, etc.
Think of the witch trial from Monty Pythons Holy Grail and you get an idea of the logic used in those dark days.
