  • Saddle the unicorns because I’m examining Red Moon and Black Mountain by Joy Chant.
A high fantasy novel from the early 1970s, Red Moon and Black Mountain exists in a middle ground between J. R. R. Tolkien’s The Lord of the Rings, Lloyd Alexander’s Chronicles of Prydain, and the Chronicles of Narnia by C. S. Lewis.

Great covers on those books PN. Love the first one from Raymond and I've never seen that Frazetta before on Red Moon. Good reviews PN! I have to admit I've not read either of these books though.

There is certainly some wild cover art for the various editions of Red Moon and Black Mountain. I think Joy Chant is one of those fantasy writers that has been mostly forgotten in the last few decades despite having been popular and achieving critical success back in the 70s and 80s. If nothing else, I think her situation as a writer might prove instructive for contemporary fantasy readers about the changeability and trends in the genre.

I've been liking this series so far of yours so far. I've been wanting to look more into fantasy from the 70s and earlier. I grew up reading stuff from the 80s to 00s, and am not strongly interested in the fairytale retellings and fae stuff that have dominated the last decade or so. Even if I don't pick up the books you talk about, its still interesting to hear about them, especially if they were popular in their time. Its fun to see how tastes and interests change.

I'm glad you're finding the series interesting. One of the reasons I started it was to fill in gaps of my own when it comes to fantasy and science-fiction and, with any luck, be able to share any works I can rediscover with a new audience.

Interesting. And interesting to see other frazetta cover other than the Howard books.
Congratulations on 100 subscribers by the way.

There are 3 fantasy novels that stand above every other fantasy novel I have read. One of these 3 favorites is Re Moon and Black Mountain. The others are The Great Divorce by C.S. Lewis and Legend by David Gemmell.

I am glad the book sits so high in your esteem. I can certainly understand why Red Moon and Black Mountain has a strong following among its readers.

I'd go broke watching PSA videos of children teleoported to fantasy worlds. Especially if they got Michael Caine and Ken Watanabe to do them.

I don't know if that would help end the scourge of if it would encourage more young people to try and find these portals.

This was fascinating. I read up a bit on the author and I'm definitely intrigued. Looking forward to hearing your take on her next novel in your box and how it compares to this one.
