As we gather in the chapel here in old Kilmainham Gaol I think about these past few weeks, oh, will they say we've failed? From our school days, they have told us we must yearn for liberty Yet, all I want in this dark place is to have you here with me Oh, Grace, just hold me in your arms and let this moment linger They'll take me out at dawn and I will die With all my love, I place this wedding ring upon your finger There won't be time to share our love for we must say goodbye Now, I know it's hard for you, my love, to ever understand The love I bear for these brave men, my love for this dear land But when Padraig called me to his side down in the G.P.O. I had to leave my own sick bed, to him I had to go Oh, Grace, just hold me in your arms and let this moment linger They'll take me out at dawn and I will die With all my love, I place this wedding ring upon your finger There won't be time to share our love for we must say goodbye Now, as the dawn is breaking, my heart is breaking, too On this May morn', as I walk out, my thoughts will be of you And I'll write some words upon the wall so everyone will know I loved so much that I could see his blood upon the rose Oh, Grace, just hold me in your arms and let this moment linger They'll take me out at dawn, now I must die With all my love, I'll place this wedding ring upon your finger There won't be time to share our love for we must say goodbye Ah, there won't be time to share our love so we must say goodbye
The evil who's creating the new world dont care about how much people love their countries it's just land to them the people at the top they use our empathy against us. May the people of Ireland stop what's happening to it at the min like they have for the last 900 years or its all been a waste of time and these brave people will have died in vain 🙏
Lets not forget also that very sadly Joseph Plunkett and his 13 comrades went to their graves believing that they were actually hated by the Irish people as Patrick Pearse confirmed in his last letter to his mother. Also, Grace's brother-in-law Thomas MacDonagh who was married to Graces sister Muriel, was also executed the day before Joseph Plunkett on 3rd May. So in fact Grace lost "2 men" in her life over that 24 hour period not just 1. Just to complete this tragic story, just 14 months later Muriel and Grace were invited for a short weekend break with other of the Easter rising Widows at Skerries, however Muriel refused to go because her son Donagh MacDonagh was in hospital at the time with a broken back. Grace persuaded Muriel to go and Muriel agreed telling her son that she would write to him everyday whilst she was away, which she did...until... Muriel was out swimming at Skerries with one of James Connolly's children and suffered a heart attack and sadly died leaving Grace without her sister, her husband and her bother-in-law and the children Barbara and Donagh left as orphans. Muriel's funeral procession went past Donagh's hospital window which was the last time he saw his mother.

I was very moved when I first heard Grace and Joseph's sad love story from the tour guide during my visit to Kilmanheim jail, Dublin 2013. RIP G and J.
The GPO mentioned in the lyrics is the Dublin General Post Office which was the headquarters of the Rising. This is where the proclamation of independence from Britain was signed. Joseph Plunkett being one of the seven signatories, all of whom were executed. I am old enough to remember the wide banners being held by marchers in the St. Patrick's Day parades saying "England Get Out Of Ireland" and Give It Back Thief", both references to the Northern Ireland 'Orange' counties that remained part of the UK when the rest of the island became the Republic of Ireland in 1949.
What is your evidence that the 1916 Proclamation was "signed" at or in the GPO prior to being printed at Liberty Hall as there were no signatures on the Proclamation just the 7 name's? True it was 'read" by Pearse outside the GPO, but signed? Please explain how that worked as I find your comment intresting.
The single most poignant love story for us Irish Republicans. So many lives destroyed but never was the love extinguished. "Let me say that the true revolutionary is guided by a great feeling of love. It's impossible to think of a true revolutionary lacking this quality" Ernesto Che' Guevara.

Thanks Jim. Absolute legend.. R.I.P.
Heart breaking FACTUAL history .They done horrific things to our country and our ancestors , we shoild never forget these men
Now our governments and SF are doing same thing. There all selling out eiRE to EU /UN flooding it wit forigners unvetted men
Imagine what they think of the rats running the country now
Those men are dead and we owe their children no hostility.
