    The application of 3D scanning to the market really spoke to me, excited to see where that goes in the near future. Can't go unsaid, the quality of bespoke and the beauty in the design is second to none...one day I'll have a few pairs myself

      Given the wider spread abbility to Lidar scan with phones (for example with polycam), this idea has the potential to go very far given how high the fidelity has become with homemade scans.

    I've just started watching but I love the old school mic style, Kirby, as always, sharply dressed, looking like a boxing announcer. Audio is a bit all over the place but I feel like it adds to the experience of it being a competition not a scheduled video.

    Its insane how i went to website of Vilalta, looked at all shoes, and chelsea boots were the wow factor, then i started to listen to interview, and he said its his most favorite shoe. I guess him and me is match made in heaven. I do not have means to afford 1100 euro shoes, let alone bespoke, but if i ever get my money right, for the more extravagant boots, i will get Vilalta chelsea in orion handmade patina, the blue/black ones or chocolate brown.

    Why does the likes of John Lobb London, gaziano and Girling and George Cleverly not join the competition Kirby?

    • @kirbyallison
      @kirbyallison  2 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      The shoemaking competition is geared towards independent craftspeople and not shoemaking firms. I'm sure there are some outworkers for these firms that entered! I know there has been in the past!

    • @shoegazingblog
      @shoegazingblog 2 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      As Kirby says, mainly independent makers that enters, or makers at firms doing it under their own names. But for example, during the three editions we've had entries from Berluti with Anthony Delos and Athanase Sephocle, from G&G Daniel Wegan (before he left for Catella), Andreas Reijers and Louis Lampertsdorfer, we've had Philippe Atienza (previously both John Lobb Paris and Massaro, and so on, so certainly big brands has been represented. And in jury we've had people from for example John Lobb Paris, Berluti and Cleverley plus people doing outwork for John Lobb Ltd, Fosters etc.

    Wasn't expecting this, I was thinking that traditional fashion was fading out but not so. The vulgar and common street fashions aren't going to dominate everywhere. Not in international cities like London, Paris, Milan, etc. As usual Kirby shows us the cream of the cream in men's fashion.

    Now we understand why bespoke shoemakers reject 3-D scanning and addition constructed lasts. Too damn hard to do, more than anyone expected. Really opened the door to techy types entering the market of shoemaking. And guess what, there are now machines to groove and sew holdfasts to welts. This is an amazing time. And here I thought coronary stents were the best thing ever invented.

    • @jkranites
      @jkranites 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Interesting enough. Because the bespoke makers rejected the scanning ideas. They opened up a new door for technology, and still in some way keep the customization process. Personally if I could invent a 3-D scanning tech and software and i have a near 90 something % Thumbs up. I'd sell it.

    KIRBY ALLISON: You like Huey Lewis and the News?
    ALLEN: Um, they're okay.
    KIRBY ALLISON: Their early work was a little too new wave for my taste. But when Sports came out in '83, I think they really came into their own, commercially and artistically. The whole album has a clear, crisp sound, and a new sheen of consummate professionalism that really gives the songs a big boost. He's been compared to Elvis Costello, but I think Huey has a far more bitter, cynical sense of humor.
    ALLEN: Hey, Halberstram?
    KIRBY ALLISON: Yes, Allen?
    ALLEN: Why are there copies of the Style section all over the place? Do you... Do you have a dog? A little chow or something?
    KIRBY ALLISON: No, Allen.
    ALLEN: Is that a raincoat?
    KIRBY ALLISON: Yes, it is. In '87, Huey released this; Fore!, their most accomplished album. I think their undisputed masterpiece is "Hip To Be Square". A song so catchy, most people probably don't listen to the lyrics. But they should, because it's not just about the pleasures of conformity and the importance of trends. It's also a personal statement about the band itself. Hey, Paul!

    Kirby, how long have you been coming to England? Derby is pronounced DARBY.

    • @austinhalvorson2041
      @austinhalvorson2041 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      It is pronounced Darby if you’re a Brit, but your more sophisticated cousins to the west of the Atlantic have chosen the “dur” sound. In english, typically one vowel is emphasized and the rest are pronounced with a soft “u” sound. But you say tomahto I say tomater, the world keeps spinning. Cheers!

    The fact some of those shoes are so impractical to wear annoys me no end. I think shoes and hand made/bespoke attire should be firstly practical and then design not the other way around and why people roll their eyes at bespoke compared to ready to wear

    • @kirbyallison
      @kirbyallison  2 ปีที่แล้ว +9

      This is certainly a frequent observation. However, it's important to not that these shoes are for exhibition only, which is what allows the shoe makers to be so aggressive in their design and construction techniques. The best analogies are haute couture runway garments vs. what is actually sold in the stores or car show concept vehicles vs. what is available in the dealership. In each case, the former is meant to really push the boundaries, and the only way to do that is to remove the constraints of practical application.
