The historical inaccuracies are immersion-breaking. It's a nothing-burger for the ignorant of Japanese culture and history, though, since everything else in it is great.
The way they've adapted such a massive source is fantastic. It's not scene of scene of the book, but they've taken the important beats and weaved that into a compelling TV show. This is how huge books should be adapted.

"Unless I win " .. came after a much deeper conversation where Toranaga says.. something like.. " You openly rebeled and defied against your legal rulers ? There is no circumstance where that situation can be accepted ( paraphrasing .. sorta like that ).... and Blackthorn ( Anjin ) says.. " unless I WIN. " .. Toranaga pauses.. thinks for a few moments.. the room is tense.. and Toranaga laughs... and says.. you're right Anjin.. THAT is the only situation at which that kind of defiance may be deemed acceptable... . If you WIN ! but I agree with many sentiments here.. this show captured the sillohuette of this story and filled it with appropriate substance , in my humble opinion... faithfully.
As a Japanese speaker myself, I'm watching it with the subtitles because they are speaking an archaic form of the language that no modern Japanese people use. That's how hardcore they went for authenticity, except the Portuguese/English part: ironically, while the modern Japanese-speaking audience would struggle understanding what the Japanese characters are saying, the English-speaking audience would have no problem understanding what the non-English characters are supposed to be saying in Portuguese because the language is replaced with modern English.

I've seen the 2 episodes of shogūn and it's so so damn good. Having a story of a period I've never seen shows or movies fully delve into, and the dynamic of a British pirate almost being killed time after time because of poor translation or false translation is such a unique angle. The characters are fleshed out so well, the sets are beautiful and the storytelling is amazing. Every focused character is unique and interesting. God tier show just from the first 2 episodes.

Because of the state of the English navy during this time period, the English Crown employed a lot of privateers which they welcome in their ports as merchants even though they committed piracy against the Spanish and Portuguese.
I thot shogun was too good to be true and thot it would be a let down. But after watching the first two episodes, it’s legit one of the best pilots I’ve ever seen

I’m not sure if I am going to watch more, because I have a lot of trouble with a show that’s in a different language, my ADHD makes it difficult for me to pay attention, and I usually need to hear english and read the English subtitles at the same time. So when watching the first episode I needed to rewind a lot after missing something. But I wish I could.
I think it’s so impactful because we’ve been accustomed to incredible IP’s being repurposed as identity politics/DEI propaganda ever since the cultural hysterics of 2020 basically solidified Hollywood into a cult of wokeness. Shogun is trying to recreate a novel set 100s of years ago and transport you into that time, full stop. It’s not a “here’s a rebranded version of the story for sensitive babies on twitter in 2024” show. It’s a breath of fresh air and hopefully a sign of letting talented people not be held back by PR vultures and respecting the audience enough to not constantly pander to them.
PLEASE WATCH BLUE EYED SAMURAI. Shogun is very popular and getting crazy viewership but blue eyed samurai hasn’t gotten the recognition it deserves. I find Japanese history as well. This country's long history is encapsulated in George Sansom s trilogy of tomes, a history of Japan, originally printed in 1958. From early on to 1868. I'm old enough to remember the original miniseries starring Toshiro mifune and Richard Chamberlin. Spot on great.
What I appreciated in this show was the fact that each character spoke their native language and had to be teaches how to speak other languages. It made it feel much more believable.
There's only 2 episodes available right now, so that's probably why it's not on some people's radar. Warrior on Netflix is also incredible & there's 3 seasons.

If HBO had pushed Warrior as much as FX is pushing Shogun it wouldn't have gotten cancelled.
