    This is by far probably one of the most underrated classic movies. At first i saw so many similarities to the Godfather, but it really is its own masterpiece. It never feels like the 3 hour long movie it is. When my kid gets older, i cant wait to watch it with them

      exactly. I watch this movie maybe every other year. so powerful, the twists and turns, the small comedic relief moments all work out together. I can watch this one, Colors, Godfather, Goodfellas, and Menace II Society over and over.

    the reason why the prison scenes seem so real is because, well they actually were. the story is inspired by the poems that jimmy baca, who plays one of the council members in la onda, wrote during his time in san quinten prison. and because they actually went to the san quinten prison to film, those prisoners are real prisoners (except for the actors), the crew had to sign papers saying that they are there at their own risk

Billy Bob Thorton from Slingblade, Ving Rhames from Pulp Fiction, Danny Trejo from Machete, Raymond Cruz from Breaking Bad, Delroy Lindo from Romeo Must Die, and others, aside from real inmates. A true cult classic! As a true crime fan, this movie never gets old! You're right this definitely shows prison hierarchy and incarceration. Also yes that was Danny Trejo, he actually served hard time in San Quentin State Prison where this movie was filmed, he was an actor on the set, not an inmate. He has truly turned his life around and is a success story of second chances and redemption, so proud of him, love his tacos too! I hope to meet him one day! 😊 I'm trying to get my local indie theater to show this movie on the big screen since 2023 is the 30th Anniversary of this masterpiece! Love your reactions. 😊

      @ganmu3970 29 วันที่ผ่านมา

      Well, did you watch the 3 hours version? Because the most commercial one it was a shorter version that the studio said 3 hours it was too long, but the director later released the 3 hours version to explain more parts of the story and there's a version which only the studio has and it's closer to 5 hours.

      That's as much footage the studio has from the movie, but it never was released, it's some minutes less than 5 hours, according to the actors, not more. They said that in a recent interview this year. It seems it has more scenes and dialogues from one of the actresses, couldn't catch the name, probably from Cruz' step-mom/Paco's mom.

    Definitely gotta watch American me next! Both films are based on the origins of LA Eme (Mexican Mafia). American Me is alot darker and more realistic feeling. The Mexican Mafia was not real happy about the movie, which was why they killed about 10 technical advisors on the movie, as well as a greenlit contract on Edward James Olmos😖😖 But a great movie tho..

    • @TheSReaction

      LA Eme killed folks who worked for the film???? My ex lives in an area where the Eme held sway and I grew up in the neighborhood where they recruited a lot of folks on the Stateside here in San Diego, but he never told me about that and he was in "the life" a looooooong time ago. That's probably one of the things he just doesn't want to talk about but daaaaaaamn!

    Sir, you should watch ''American Me'' (1992) by Edward James Olmos, that movie is imo way better than this movie (which I saw probably in 1993 on video, a year before the 1992 movie). I'm not sure, but both movies feels like it was based on the same true story (although, ''American Me'' says it was Inspired by a true story and ''Blood in Blood out'' was actually based on a true story).

    Well, the ethnic division and fixation on skin, it's a US thing for the most part, different countries have their own social issues in those aspects, like gangs are ethnic based in the US. If I remember well, in Colombia for example, prisons could have guerilla members divided by political ideology, if they meet there, bad things could arise. Latin American countries are diverse, effect of different migrations, but sharing a same culture, the Latin American culture, where as in the US, you just have to have 1 Latin American parent to be considered a Latino, while probably not even having the culture, again related to certain fixations and divisions.
    Where I live, there's no prison gangs, but there has been organized criminal groups also giving orders to the outside, nothing complex, I guess some may be still running, but in certain operations authorities managed to break them up.
    For the most part, Latin America has a problem of classism, but there's also the want-to-be people who watches too much US TV and also an effect of eurocentrism that Spanish and Portuguese left behind in what's now Latin America since colonial times, so they make it similar to what happens in the US in relation to division, in certain countries and social classes.
