Mi Familia is another good Chicano movie
fun fact about this movie : everything filmed inside San Quinten prison, the people in the background...all real inmates. As its explained in the making of-docu, there are only 7-8 actors on set at most, rest are all real inmates.
Wonder who were the real inmates outside of miklo and Danny Trejo and Billy bob thorton. Also the leader of the BGA

Fun fact: the artist who painted all the artwork used in the film was Adan Hernández.(He's makes a cameo as the guy near the car at Cruz's art opening) He passed away a couple years ago. He was based out of my hometown San Antonio Texas, like Jesse Borrego (Cruz)... the mural at the end of the film was a huge prop. Painted on canvas & made to look like it was painted on the wall. It had to be cut into sections to transport it back to San Antonio...a few years ago, I was working for a cultural arts organization here in SA & I stumbled upon the mural in one of their storage properties. I didn't hesitate take a pic of my daughter's in front of it...the movie & the art are iconic.

I got it from A movie that came out years ago called The Pool Boy. Its so funny
The directers cut and original is just a couple scenes difference. The original movie was 5 hours and they cut it down to 3. To this day no one has seen the 5hr cut, Disney owns the right to this movie, so ppl doubt it will be fully released. When you purchase the original dvd, on the back of the cover you can see a picture of paco and his wife. A scene that wasnt in the movie. Ppl have petitioned for the 5hr cut but nothing has come out of it. When this movie came out, it was a flop. Thats the reason there wasnt a sequel or any spin offs. The writer of the movie is Montanas right hand man. He has confirmed that he has finished written the sequel in which Miklo and Cruz have agreed to it. But nothing has come out of it. Theres a movie called Vatos Locos starring Miklo, but it has nothing to do with blood in blood out, so dont get tricked into watching, its really bad. This movie is called blood in blood out, but the title was to much for theaters and was changed to Bound by Honor. Once it hit dvds it went back to blood in blood out. This movie eventually went to become a cult classic and is celebrated to this day. Miklo, Magic, Cruz and Popeye go on tour across america doing meet n greets. I got to meet all of them, most recently miklo a few months back.

I love this movie but I never noticed how stacked this movie actually was. I just noticed Billy Bob Thornton as Lighting. This movie is 100% an American classic and will most likely always be my favorite movie.
Wow! Awesome review, one of if not, THE best review I've seen for this movie! You were really into it and understood it. I watch this movie at least once a year. One thing I have to point out is the soap mold scene. Its a mold of Bonafides hair pick. It was Miklo and Magic that replicated the pick and sent to Wallis in Delano, it was Miklo and Magic who had Montana killed.
Yes, I rewatched it and my brain clicked ! How the heck is there not a sequel. A truly missed opportunity in cinema.

It came out during the LA riots. there are also many other reasons but. Can't expect HOLLYWOOD to do something if they ain't making money
Besides the actors. Every other person was an actual inmate in the san quinton scenes. Crazy. And i believe that was the actual warden of the prison also. Great video boss!!

Watch it again with subtitles cause you get more nuance when you know all the Spanish & slang they speak in the film.
Me, growing in north of México's hoods, knowing a lot of chicanos from south USA hoods, that's a great depiction of street gangs, the hood (el barrio) and poor families, I´ve never been on a USA jail so can´t say much about that. This movie is the kind of OG cholos see at least once a year for nostalgia and, well, that's a master piece
It was supposed to have a part 2, but everything got canceled because of the Rodney King riots of 1991, Disney thought this movie was too explicit.

So one reason the movie was not promoted much at the time it was released is, American me had just been released and done well for a gang movie but then the LA riots happened. So gang violence was looked upon more specially for LA which is where the movie is based in so they didn't promote it as much but as you see still an amazing film.

another fun fact of this movie the man walking to the death door bald headed white man with tattoos on head is a real inmate walking to execution 2nd fun fact the water hydrant the cruzito is dropped on moves when he is dropped on it if you look closely its a prop water hydrant anothe movie you should if havent reacted to Mi Famila/My Family

Always knew this movie as “Sangre por sangre”. blood in blood out is a great movie.

If you look at the trailer for it it shows clips of rhe movie that are not shown in rhe released version, including paco dancing with his wife/girlfriend. There was talk that they wanted to release the unedited 5 hour long movie but since it belongs to Disney and because of the optics they believe it will never be released. I for one would have no problem sitting down 5 hours and watching it!!!
The mold that magic presented to miklo was the mold to the comb they created. Miklo and magic orchestrated the hit on Montana to be killed because he was become soft and wanted peace with the rest of. They had to take him out to make la onda strong.

There has been a follow up podcast this past year where most of the actors come on and talk about it. We all agree that it needed more, they said they honestly had about 6 hours of film time they wanted to add but you can’t have a 6 hour movie. So much had to be taken out.
I could be wrong, but if memory serves trejo was in prison when filming came to the Q. This was his first role as background and obv transitioned upon release to bigger and better things
You should do “American Me”…it came out around the same time and both are loosely based on the founders of the Mexican mafia prison gang. American Me is presented more like a biography film than “blood in blood out.”
