After all the jerking around Kate did with him because she's too afraid to be vulnerable and be real with her emotions, she KNEW at this point Castle was head over heals for her, so does she just put it out there and share her true feelings for him? Nope she just backs off and chickens out and instead reaches out to a guy she just met. It's a good thing this stand off only lasted a few more episodes or that would have been it for this show. It's always tough to let go of the sexual tension in a series, because few shows can survive after that, but at some point you risk doing more damage to the characters by coming up with stupid reasons to cool it off after bringing them to the edge too many times.
True but this scene also showed the truth of most people afraid of feeling too much. They know they are hurting the other but they are too afraid or have too much insecurity to just go for it. Even being smart, they will still choose the less emotional option because it's "safe".

Season 4 highlights two things, beckett's self esteem and value she placed on herself in s2 and s3 is not there anymore, Beckett rejected castle in s2 because he slept with Ellie Monroe and she was right to reject him, castle is an idiot before that , but her treatment of him was uncalled for, in s4 her self esteem and value is not there anymore, which means josh broke up with her , the fact that castle still slept with other women and still slept with Beckett at the end of s4 clearly indicates that the self value she placed on herself in previous seasons is no longer there . Hence castle slept with other women and still managed to sleep with Beckett too

Sometimes the writers can get too cute for their own good. CB told that suspect she remembered e-v-e-r-y-t-h-i-n-g about her shooting, not knowing RC was on the other side of the glass, as he was not yet in the office when she went into the interrogation room. That`s when he found out she did hear him say `I love you`. What else was RC to think? After all this time he figured she didn`t feel the same way. That would have been any guys cue to leave that situation altogether. At that point it seems as if their relationship was nothing more than toying with each other`s feelings.....
As Castle said though. He didnt stay because of her after. He liked doing his job. Not simply writing but actually helping people and he felt that it was worth sticking around a while longer. In the end he decided (in ep. 22) that he was gonna leave but then he changed his mind when Beckett basicly told him (although a bit cryptic but Castle understood anyway) that she had lied because of personal issues that she "had" to work through before anything could happend.
I do not blame Castle with his deciding not to pursue/show interest in Beckett anymore especially when he finds out that she actually remembers everything. It also doesn't help the fact that Beckett has lied to Castle every single day/night since season 1 episode 1 to season 8 series finale.
