That culture of safety is the single most important thing a gym can have. No amount of skilled instructors, world champion athletes, or any other benefit matters to me The Hobbyist if I go into class wondering if I'm going to have full use of my body when I leave. Or in the same vein, no woman is going to want to train at a gym that allows creepers and predators to do their thing unhindered. There's no place for unsafe people in a good gym.

Spot on advice. Your red lines should be a) anyone can decline a roll with anyone b) your coaches put safety above everything else especially for lower belts. Ripping on submissions (especially ones that are illegal at white belt) isn't training hard, it's training stupid, and your career won't be very long.
It's very likely that the brown belt has been training there for years and is representative of that gym's culture in which case they suck and you should leave and find a better one. You'll know once you speak to a coach about it, he'll either put basic safety or his brown belt first.

At my gym years ago there were 4-5 blue belts and one purple belt that decided to only train no gi all the time and focus on leg locks. They would just instruct themselves in a corner while the rest of the class trained under the instructor usually in gi more often than not. No idea why they were allowed to do this but I guess they were paying full fees just to rent a single square to themselves. They joined the rolls but did not participate in the group warmup or class. In gi this purple belt ripped a toe hold on my half guard as blue belt. My knee and ankle popped. I knew I would not roll with him again but that wasn’t sufficient. I confronted him in the changing room after we changed into our normal clothes intentionally doing so after he disrobed and put on civilian clothes. The little difference between colors means little in that context. I looked him directly in the eyes square face to face and told him he hurt me when he ripped that toe hold in gi. I told him I didn’t think that was appropriate as a submission despite what he and his buddies were incessantly drilling. I told him he made it hard to walk off the mat that day and I wouldn’t have done the same to him just for the sake of winning the roll. I told him I have to work in a hospital as a physician and he made it harder to do that based on his decision to rip that particular submission. Then I waited for him to respond…. He sort of panicked a little and gave me some word salad response which included, “bro, we don’t have any secrets here, I’ll teach you the submission, there are no secrets here man.” I looked him in the eyes the whole time and I told him that wasn’t the point. I don’t want you to teach me how to do an illegal move in gi. I want you to not injure the next person. I stared him down. And he went sideways broke eye contact constantly and gave me more word salad. He may have apologized but I don’t remember hearing it.
I also told the instructor what he did the next day and he was taken aside and another talk was had.
He never approached me to roll again which is exactly the outcome I wanted. I guess my point is, there are other ways to make people submit.

Brown belt here. Recently my academy had to let a guy know that his disregard for other people’s safety was causing problems, the cranking, the reaping, etc. However I’ve told one of my coaches recently that he still may not be getting the hint and for this reckless purple belt’s safety I will not roll with him especially if we’re starting from the feet because I cannot guarantee he will leave the mat in the same condition he stepped on it. They’re going to have one more talk with him, so we will see how it goes.

In 8 years of training I’ve met two - three high ranked individuals that I would consider “mean” or who rolled in training with no regard for their partner. I was comfortable with them, but I realize going in, that any close submission they may have is an audible tap from me. To do this to a newer grappler is insane, most likely ego issues.
Additionally, over the years I’ve met more white belts (mostly with wrestling backgrounds) who I would consider hot heads or unsafe. They usually don’t last long; they can not stand losing. As an upper belt you can & should be able to handle these situations with relative ease (slow down the roll, flow from submissions rather than continuing until they tap).

I've had been at this gym for a few months already and rolled against a 200lb+ purple belt that was like over 45+ yrs old and i'm 150lb. 1st roll against him went like any other roll. The 2nd time I rolled against him, He starts off the roll saying, "let's take it easy" and proceeds to start going hard and kneed me 3 times on my head. After the 3rd knee to the head, I said, "we're done here, you already kneed me 3 times in the head." Didn't roll with him again for like almost a year.

I've trained at many traditional martial arts schools as well as an MMA school but never a pure BJJ gym, so there may be some cultural things specific to BJJ gyms that I simply have never been exposed to. I guess somewhat from "the outside looking in", one of the things that this made me wonder is whether or not part of the problem is a lack of supervision by assistant instructors/coaches if the head coach is unable to; I get that the head coach can't be everywhere and see everything but it just seems wrong that the only way that a head coach gets clued in that he has a problem child in his gym is if the students come to report it. We are talking about adults so yeah, I get that the students have a role to play but I still think by-and-large that the coach should generally be aware of what is going on on his mats.

Unfortunately, BJJ seems to have fallen away from the practice in many gyms or affiliations.

I trained in traditional martial arts from my early years through my teenage years. I eventually learned that I had been wasting my time in terms of acquiring practical skills, but I do miss the traditional focus on honor, respect, and character building.
It seems very common for us to throw out the baby with the bathwater. Started watching a video the other day of a no gi tournament, and guys in the background were lighting up and smoking marijuana.
If that’s something you like to do, I could care less, but it shouldn’t be happening at a martial arts school.
Another example of throwing out the baby with the bathwater is the fact that most Brazilian jiu-jitsu schools no longer teach or require the students to know the basic self-defense techniques.
How can you even call it a martial art and put “self-defense” on your window/website if your students never actually learn what to do when someone throws a punch at them?

Not good for a brown. I'm a blue belt, and when I'm rolling with white belts I try to roll with competition rules. Because I don't want any of my partners being dq'd for something they get put in all the time. If I do see it, I usually apply a slight pressure just for me to practice, but not enough to make them tap. If I do go for a tap, I'm usually joking or I point it out that it's illegal for competition in white.
Also I get upset if my partners are not aware that I going light on a submission, and trying to give them time to tap safely. I've had to say it stresses me out if I have to put too much pressure in a roll. This is not a competition match.

Imagine if we were in a normal gym, and some bloke on the machines was like that, we would immediately tell the gym manager wouldnt we. Same thing. He's the horrid coach from the karate kid! He might teach his own classes one day and that would be horrid. Also in dancing, i do lindy hop, the culture is to never say no to a dance. If you say no, people are aghast! Sorry, but if i danced with that lead who nearly disclocated my shoulder doing a turn i am not going to dance with him again. So i say no thank you. Or if the lead is a perv theres no way i'm dancing. I avoid eye contact and slide away to another part of the dance floor.

Is this normal? I got tapped out by a purple one time for 6 rolls straight. Nonstop. I almost quit. But did end up quitting 2 years later at 4 stripe white. Just sick of the culture.

Being tapped by purple belt 6 times in a row as white belt is normal and not a problem if he’s safe doing it. If he actually hurt you during that time by ripping submissions or doing other unsafe things that isn’t normal.

You were a 4stripe white belt and you didn't know a pb would tap someone silly all round?

@@richardgallagher4880I'm a 4 stripe white belt so I kinda feel this. However, unless this person was being dangerous someone has a fragile ego and quit because of it. Where I train we have a purple who will tap me all day and that's cool with me. I get to see new things and learn. This is the same guy who gave me one of my favorite kneebar setups. Gotta squash the ego to learn. Getting tapped by players with more mat time is part of the game. At a certain point you start getting legit subs on them and it feels good.

Dick move... we're adults... talk to coach and sit out a round if it's just you and him... most of us have to still go clock in to work the next day.

Mat bullying is foundational to keeping uppity white and blue belts in line. You can’t let the inmates run the prison.

Small joints are too easy to break. That's why small joint manipulation is usually not used in training.

Wristlocks are legit but they are also dangerous if not done properly, a black belt wristlocked me very fast and I didn't had time to tap, I needed wrist reconstruction surgery from torn tendons and ligaments, I haven't been able to train in 8 months as I'm still healing my wrist.

What a disgrace. If you can't do the submission controlled - don't do it.
