    All the details are exquisitely engineered for optimal efficiency at the lowest cost. This young builder is impressive. Many quick-build shelter videos speak about the lack of affordable housing in the 3rd World but in Western countries there's a crying dearth of housing too. In France wher I live there's a permanent crisis in husing and if people knew how to build with cob or adobe the crisis would let up a bit.

      I have built with tires, earthstyle, and is more weatherproof for higher moisture areas. A good way to recycle tires.

      the biggest barriers to building like this is the requirements of building codes that make this type of building impossible to use for residential housing

    As primitive as this appears there is really a lot of engineering in this structure. A HUGE amount of thermal mass in the roof, absorbs heat through the day (slowing the penetration of the heat into the house during the day) and releases it throughout the night, the length-wise steps, or grooves, in the roof, give tooth to the cob. pretty neat stuff. Great video, thanks for sharing.

      I wonder if this cob style of roof is feasible in temperate climates with more rain

      @@godaboveall8344 I'm not sure if this applies to all similar building techniques but I was told by locals during a visit to Aswan, Nubia that their houses were severely damaged by unexpected rain a few years back so had to rebuild the houses with concrete to avoid this happening in the future.

      @@godaboveall8344 it's worth mentioning that this sort of architecture is common in the drier parts of Egypt but nonexistent in the rainy north. I'd imagine that's not a coincidence.

    Thanx 4 sharing. I am about to build my own earthen home, but I was worried about the roof. I really didnt want to use metal or wood, and I had never seen any videos that showed an earthen roof. This is a GREAT "how to" video, and I'm sure after a few viewings I can figure out how to do it myself.
    Again, THANX! :0)

    That would explain why they finished the roof they way they did.
    Their's is a more arid environment. In my environment, I'm afraid a roof like that would just dissolve down to the plastic water barrier. I'm amazed that they didn't build the vaulting on a temporary wooden form. Some amazing skill there. An inside shot of the ceiling would have been nice.

    Wow! such a huge amount of material on the roof. I wonder what would happen if they learned to make light weight materials and use insulation to keep the heat out? Perhaps a reflective white roof and outer walls too?

    • @ReevansElectro
      @ReevansElectro 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      Ale Ruiz I am well aware of the thermal mass concept in ancient buildings that delays heat transfer by the fact that they use so much material and high ceilings. In the modern world, we have developed the ability to construct homes that far exceed the temperature control achieved in old massive walled and ceilinged structures by using materials more judiciously. Insulation is the simple answer but geothermal pits can be used to supply the thermal mass to extract and store energy.

    • @brettknoss486
      @brettknoss486 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Robert Evans If the supply chain is avaliable, trusses filled with insulation is the best option.

    • @ReevansElectro

      brett knoss The clever use of local resources would allow them to make trusses or other support structures that would be insulated.

    • @chakiperdomo1372
      @chakiperdomo1372 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      How ease will be to find insulation in a remote place in a developing country the adobe and soil acts as a mas storage..keeping a uniform temperature inside the building.. have you ever been inside a cave in a hot summer day....

    • @ReevansElectro
      @ReevansElectro 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      You are talking about thermal inertia and thermal mass as a moderator of temperature. It takes a huge amount of material to do this sort of thing and a lot of human labour. The ideal is to use science and engineering to use the least amount of materials and labour to achieve the best results. This requires that people learn about and understand the concepts of heat transfer and material thermal transmission properties. In other words: learn about insulation and closing windows and doors.
      In my travels around the world, people in developing nations have a very child like attitude towards heating and cooling; if you stand in front of a fire, you get warm and if you stand in front of an air conditioner, you get cool. The concepts of heating and cooling an entire building are completely foreign to them and they often believe that you need a heating or cooling unit in every room or more. They can't imaging the concept of insulating to keep the heat out or keep it in.
