    Guitar physics correction: You aren’t creating a node when you place your finger there. There are always nodes along the string’s length, but the fundamental is much louder and it’s the only one we usually perceive. Placing your finger lightly over various points along the string blocks the fundamental and other wavelengths while allowing one of the nodes to continue vibrating relatively undisturbed. The sound of all those different overtone notes together combine into the sound we normally hear when we pluck a string. Read up on the harmonic or overtone series for more. It gets super interesting! Especially when you find out about how blurry the line between rhythm and pitch/polyrhythm and harmony actually gets. Source: Have long hair. Am dead guitar TH-camr.

      no, not Office Hours. A brand new series called String Theory. It could be like his twitch gaming series where he jams as he talks about related science stuff that appears in what he's playing (his jams could be informal cover performances or perhaps they're presentations done during practice sessions as he works on a proper performance video), or it could be some practical-science demonstration stuff that uses music or music-making phenomena.
      Another option could be similar to Neil and Chuck's StarTalk format where Kyle invites an expert with musical interest to talk about something sciency interspersed with little performances. Kyle could even play gameshow host like Tom Scott where various sci-coms have to compete/perform in some way...like, I dunno, sing a song about Bernoulli's Principle or compose an arrangement using science experiments as your musical instruments.

    Hello, RF engineer here. I have a pretty HUGE point of contention. In your equation at 9:10, you (and i guess the folks who wrote that paper) completely dropped the relative dielectric of the medium the wave is traveling. The real equation is Lambda = C / (Sqrt(er) * f). As you say, water is a pretty strong dielectric due to its H bonding. Naïve google search puts the er of water at 78. Google is also pretty good at preserving units, try searching: (speed of light / ( sqrt(78) * 315 MHz))/2 to meters. So whatever is acting as the antenna in your body, is some multiple of that length. The wavelength you have at 9:10 is for a wave traveling in air.
    Caveat, to all that. That assumes the wave (more precisely the E and H fields) are 100% contained in the body. If whatever mechanism is creating the antenna allows the fields to exist in both the body and air simultaneously, the effective dielectric will be somewhat less than 78 but still pretty large in comparison to common dielectric materials used for antenna design. All that being said, love your work, always leaning something new, subbed long ago.

    • @Daggeira
      @Daggeira 3 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      @@2012TH-camWasBetter Yes, it was shitty, but that isn't an explanation. If it were standard glitchiness as shitty hardware tends to produce, it would not have behaved the same way every day for an entire year. It's not like I was pushing it back into place with my leg, I had opened the case several times and KNOW the card was secure because _I_ was the one who had fastened it. Also, in the case of this model, the wifi card mounted* horizontally, so pressing on it with my leg wouldn't affect the connection whatsoever. The only reasonable explanation in that something was amplifying the singal, and circumstantially, that something would have to be my leg. It didn't work at all if it wasn't in that particular spot; I'd have to go to a completely different room if I got sick of holding it that way (which I did often, as it was heavy).
      If you have a better explanation, feel free to profer it, but simply saying it doesn't work that way isn't sufficient to change my mind. Wi-fi uses radio waves, and I know beyond a shadow of a doubt that I can amplify radio signals as I've tested the shit out of it over the course of my life, particularly in my "listening to the radio on an alarm clock" period. I also know beyond a shadow of a doubt that I specifically _interfere_ with Bluetooth frequencies, but that's only relevant in regards to the fact that my bio-mass interacts with all sorts of shit.

    • @MrDJAK777
      @MrDJAK777 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Think he dismissed it as being caused by the same effect because the keyfobs work due to their operating frequency and the whole body matching that and working as a resonating cavity thing. Wifi runs at much higher frequencies, 99% of the time either 2.4ghz or 5ghz so has much smaller waves of 12cm and 6cm. Besides that 2.4ghz is also readily absorbed by water and so would not get reflected around your skull and amplified in the same manner for that reason as well.

  • @peterepeatepete2845

    Playing on the “nodes” you mentioned is called “harmonics” in guitar terms and if you Pluck two neighboring harmonic notes on a guitar that is slightly out of tune, the disruptive effect the two notes have in each other is greatly increased and you can hear it very clearly. This therefore becomes a very good way to tune the guitar if you know one of the strings IS in perfect tune, you play one of the harmonics on that string and then the harmonic on the “off” string. The disruptive effect is VERY obvious,, you can hear it clear as day in the vibrato, it sounds like two entirely different vibrations smacking into each other. You then tune the off string until you can hear the disruption change from clashing with itself into a smooth blending of the tones.
    It’s a cool effect, you don’t simply hear the two notes start to sound the same, you hear the two vibrations meld to be perfectly in sync.

    As a cellist, I’d like to point out some other neat things you can do with those resonance points. While pressing on them and playing does give you those nice overtones like you showed, you can also get other notes to play. By placing your finger on the point but not pressing it down, you can get the harmonic to play instead of what you’d normally get by pressing on it. Not sure if it works on guitars, but you should definitely check out these harmonics and how they work.

    • @DarkWolfseternalfire

    • @coreysullivan2171
      @coreysullivan2171 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Nah a pinch harmonic is where you actually fret the string but use a different pick technique to create a more present harmonic sound. Lightly touching the strings when you pick but not fully fretting in the right spots creates a natural harmonic, which is what kyle was doing and is exactly the same concept as on cello. Its a much more gentle sound than pinch harmonics

    This video makes me feel a little less crazy. In high school, there was a local student ran radio station that I liked to listen to while cleaning the house, but it didn't come in very well. However, I found that if I stood in one spot in my living room, the signal was crystal clear. Any other place in the room, and I would get static interference. I could only assume at the time that my body was somehow enhancing the signal to the radio. Probably not the same phenomena that's happening in the video, but I was still reminded and reassured a bit.
    Edit: did some math, and actually it might be the same thing, just weird that it was that one spot. The broadcast frequency was 88.1 MHz, which would give it a wavelength of 3.4m or about 11' 2". I was about 5' 6-8" at the time.

The side of the head (temple) worked better than under the chin. However, the improvement was minimal, a gain of about 10 feet of head over hand. Blame it on an old car, old fob, low battery, but it did work. And now I have a headache...

  • @Traados

    This is super fascinating, as I've often wondered if we (as individuals) are like wavelengths of energy that our particular bodies pick up on, as if one were a "meat antenna". Or, if all life is the same wavelength and that individuality comes from what divergent experiences we all end up having. Though I don't like what the latter theory implies.

    • @JarieSuicune
      @JarieSuicune 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      That sounds weirdly similar to the idea of a living spirit that is bound to a meat body, but in a very confused way since, if you think about it, wavelengths of energy don't just stop in random bodies of matter and hang around in it until that vessel just stops functioning and no sooner, as well as the point that energy itself doesn't equal intelligence.
      "Intelligence" itself isn't even defined to begin with, since barring spirits/religion (ie: intelligence comes from the spirit being that is temporarily bound to a meat body for a limited experience on Earth for the purpose of education and the Big Test), literally no explanation has actually managed to be shown as "true" (And there is no "close to proven", because you would have to know the answer as a fact to judge if it is close or not), though a number of theories have been shown to be increasingly unlikely or straight up wrong.
      Also weird since that would imply there is a freaky "intelligence energy wave" that propagates through the universe yet apparently only works on humans, has only unique, never-repeating waveforms, and is apparently impossible to detect, analyze, or generate (which would make artificial intelligence the easiest thing ever).

    Haha, Kyle being American is really showing this episode (nothing wrong with that).
    I live in a Swedish city. I can literally walk, ride a bicykle, or use cheap public transport to get wherever I need to go (even between cities), as the city and surrounding areas and municipalities are made to accomodate bicykles and pedestrians over cars.
    In my adult life (so the past 18 years) I've needed a car 5 times. Three of them was because I moved from one city to another, one for moving a couch and once to quickly get to and back from a little town halfway across the country in the same day.
    I literally cannot justify the cost of owning a car, thus I just rent or borrow one if I need one.
    In the USA, it is my understanding that you basically need a car in most of the country. But here, you do just fine without one as long as you live in a city and don't need to wrangle children. 😄
