    Oh Sally thank you for giving the sweetest Grace a journey of growth and boldness with her closest friend. They always were the perfect couple. Her desire to stay as a pillar in her community doing charitable works should never be undervalued. She needed to come out of Hopes shadow because it was dishonest of her to let Hope take the credit for her good ideas and stopped others knowing the real Grace.
    The healthy relationship between Jacob and his mother is a precursor of how Jacob will treat Grace. It is so precious.
    The growth in her father is subtle but it is clear to him by the end that Graces brave steps are very different to Hopes.
    I love the rainy orchard scene. What a lovely ending.
    And thank you Marian for your incredible range of different voices, a different one for every single character.

    • @AuthorSallyBritton
      @AuthorSallyBritton  21 วันที่ผ่านมา +1

      I really don't think Grace let Hope take the credit so much as Grace likes being in the background. It didn't matter to her - or to Hope, really - who got the credit. They worked together for the outcomes they wanted. In Hope's story, when she thinks about Grace and how much she loves her sister, she genuinely wants Grace to find happiness and more confidence. Whereas Grace knows Hope needs to learn to curb some of her impulses. As for the father...well. Just wait until you get to Romancing the Artist.

    I've listened to several of your stories and I have to say that this one is by far my favorite. I think one reason is that I can identify with Grace more than any of your other heroines. Although I have always truly disliked stories where twins switch places the way you wrote this was quite appealing to me. I also enjoy that you do not belabor the ill-mannered and negative characters, dragging things out unnecessarily. Thank you so much for making your stories available in this way.

    Loved Grace's and Jacob's story. I think its the first time I read a regency romance where the hero is a vicar. I'm not sure why, since it's one of the few occupations a gentleman could have, you'd think there would be more books about them. As you did with Jacob, a man of faith can be passionate and romantic while also having the principles a vicar should have. Thank you for writing this story. I enjoyed it immensely ❤

    • @AuthorSallyBritton
      @AuthorSallyBritton  11 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      There is a wonderful work of nonfiction called "Gentlemen of Uncertain Fortune." It has so many wonderful details - and it's written with an entertaining style - about the types of "appropriate" ways for gentlemen/noblemen's 2nd, 3rd, 4th, sons to earn a living. A LOT of men chose to be vicars/rectors/bishops strictly because it was an acceptable profession. Many of them never taught a single sermon, either. We have great examples of vicars in Jane Austen's work. Her own father earned his living from the church and whatever land he was allotted while working in that capacity. She certainly respected the position, but then she gave us people like Mr. Collins (really wouldn't want to listen to his sermons) and Mr. Elliot (pompous and arrogant man). So even Austen made certain we were all quite aware of the fact that not everyone who chose that occupation was right for the job. All that being said, it was REALLY fun to write Jacob. Someone who was sincere in his wishes to use his vocation as it was intended. To help and guide his community. :-) I'm glad you enjoyed it!

    • @i.am.10vely
      @i.am.10vely 11 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      It's really sad how many chose the profession without having sincere wishes to help others. Reminds me of our time, when some go into the medical field for the money, rather than wishing to help sick people. But I'm sure sincere people like Jacob existed then and now as well. Thanks for the information! It was very interesting ❤🤗

      @AuthorSallyBritton  ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I really, really know he isn't Austrian. :-) I maybe should add an author note to that effect. He was part of the Austrian music scene, of course, and that's how many of his contemporaries referred to him. Since he was a major player in what some would now call "the Austrian music tradition." Glad you enjoyed the book!

      @@AuthorSallyBritton I'm sorry for assuming you didn't know! It has been a matter of contention between Germany and Austria for ages. Beethoven considered himself a Rhinelander, he never adopted the Viennese dialect and even shortly before his death he signed his letters "Beethoven Bonnensis".

    In Chapter 17, I am exceedingly disappointed in the men in Grace's life. How dare her father say she doesn't try to change the world for the better? She's done one thing for herself in her life. One act of self-preservation, during the execution of which she continues to think of the wellbeing of others. How dare they act as if she's a wholy selfish person? They better do some growing to deserve Grace.
    Edited to add. Her love interest stepped up, but her father is still on my list. I loved Grace, and just want her to be fully appreciated.

      A point in his favor is that he didn’t make her speak before the congregation. He seems to be slowly understanding why she made the choices she did. Grace didn’t have a chance to shine with her dynamic sister nearby. Another indication was when her father told Grace that it might have been better to separate her from her sister sooner. What a good thing Hope got on that boat!

    The book was great. I like the overlooked person trope which is also in the first book, and how the relationship envolves between the two, such a chemistry. It had only one minor flaw for me, Beethoven was German, not Austrian, and while this may be unimportant to many people, I do not like when editors do not fact check. I thought the narrator was fantastic, good distinct voices

    • @AuthorSallyBritton
      @AuthorSallyBritton  ปีที่แล้ว +6

      YAY! I love that you brought it up. This was a deliberate wording on my part. While Beethoven was born German, he spent a LOT of time in Vienna, which is part of Austria. He was thus considered part of the Vienna artistic and musical movement, and many classified his music as "Austrian," especially during the Regency time period.

    • @julianelue
      @julianelue ปีที่แล้ว

      That may be true, but as a German myself living in Vienna for over a decade now, I am still German and would never consider myself Austrian. Living and working abroad does not change ones nationality. Handel lived and worked in London most of his life, but still he was a German composer all his life

    • @AuthorSallyBritton
      @AuthorSallyBritton  ปีที่แล้ว

      Dude, narcissism is horrible. But that's not who Hope is. I have a narcissist villain/father in another series and lived with a diagnosed narcissist growing up. Hope isn't a horrid person. She's just outgoing and willing to stand up for what she wants. Grace recognizes this and wishes, sometimes, she was more like her sister. It's the difference between an extrovert and an introvert. In her turn, if you read/listen to Hope's story, you'll learn how much she admires Grace's quiet strength and wishes she could be more like her twin. They're not as dissimilar as they think, but not "the same" in the way people might expect sisters/twins to be. :-)

I just mean that these social patterns that you have so perfectly portrayed, really shape our self esteem and adult lives, and maybe if we understood them better we could live better and happier sooner. Anyway, yes, I think a lot. Love your super-intelligent writing.

      I think a lot of people like the world of the Regency even when they don't like the rules. Sometimes, it's fun to find ways to break those rules for our characters. But I also think we do women of that time period a disservice, to think they weren't as interesting or as vivacious as we are today. I love writing women who fit into the time period and STILL have strength, courage, kindness, and drive. I'm so glad you loved that about Grace!

    Hmmm... I have been listening to the books in order, having just read The Artist . I have strong unhappy opinions about a character. I do not want to give any benefit of the doubt to the character. I am still unhappy about that! 😢😂
    I am posting this comment while I am only on Chapter 1! Maybe I have read them out of order?
    It doesn't matter - I will continue to binge all the Inglewood stories I can find!

      The Artist is a sequel to the whole series that this book is part of.

      Each story gets better and better each time I listen

    Another regency story of twins exchanging identity is Georgette Heyer's False Colours. Men who are twins in that case.

      I so adore Georgette Heyer! If I’ve read that one, I’ve forgotten it. I’m off to add it to my reading list!

      @@AuthorSallyBritton its not one of her top most novels, but a sweet good fun story. I've now begun to enjoy her side characters so much more than when I was younger..

      This is one of my absolute favorites, because it is a genuinely shy and an introverted heroine who is not a doormat or pushover, and who also does not have some sort of transformation into being a more outgoing heroine
