  • This UNESCO World Heritage site is a series of underground decorated tombs, just outside the town of Tarquinia near Rome. It shows us in great detail the cultural history of the Etruscan people, one of the tribes that occupied the area before the rise of Rome. Inside the tombs, we can see typical scenes of aristocratic and rural life - hunting, fishing, banqueting and dancing, and a couple of unusual surprises as well!

We've seen some great tomb complexes on the World Heritage Journey, in Romania, Bulgaria, Italy, Malta and many other places! Not much other Etruscan culture sadly, as the ancient Romans did such a thorough job of eradicating it.

Definitely - it's an artistic culture we don't see that much of sadly! Thanks for watching 👍

I noticed in all the art work, that the figures face to the side - profile shots - none that I can see face either forward (toward the artist) or with their back to the artist. Seems unusual, and I'm now puzzled as to why. Sure looks like an interesting place to visit!

Did Romans take any interest in them (apart from the emperor Claudius)?

Yeah we really enjoyed it! Etruscan sites are largely buried by later Roman ones, so it was fascinating to see this little glimpse of the past. Thanks for watching 👍
