Peter Mansbridge is easily the best person in Canada to conduct these interviews. He's doing a fantastic job.

Indeed! I love that he bores down at times when he doesn't get a real answer, despite not getting a real answer a second time in some cases. He's also showing the least amount of bias I've seen in political interviews. Positively brilliant.

I like Mulcair because he doesnt flip flop. He gives you his clear stance on every issue regardless of whether some people might not like it. Plus he represents the average Canadian and not just rich people and big corporations like Harper. I dont mind Trudeau but hes just not as clear on where he sits, and voting for bill C51 is damn near unforgivable. Mulcair wants all the things that Canada needs. We need to raise taxes on the wealthiest corporations, we need to switch to sustainable energy, we need to start being a leader again in development and manufacturing. We need to stop liquidating our raw resources to other countries and giving them the refining jobs. These things couldnt be more clear and Mulcair is advocating for them so hes got my vote.
+ziggy4242 Oh I have to disagree, Mulcair doesn't really commit to anything, he doesn't even have a finance minister chosen. Mulcair wants to open up the constitution, that is a whole can of worms, he believes in keeping many of the things that Harper has put in place that continues to give the wealthiest of Canadians help they do not need. He has no plan to lower taxes for the middle class, he has no plan to stop sending cheques to those who have children and make over 200K per year. The $15 daycare plan for one has to be agreed upon by all the provinces and it will not be going to many who work shift work and make minimum wage. There is not a daycare out there that will be open 24/7 and those who make 200K will also be entitled to $15 daycare? His minimum wage plan is deceitful, it only applies to about 1% of those that presently make minimum wage, he can not enforce $15 minimum wage nationally.
He won't even commit to being a Canadian. IF he was born into dual citizenship that would be different but he CHOOSES to be dual, NO leader of any country should be swearing allegiance to another country. His wife ran under the Conservative banner in France, his office refuses to deny or confirm if he voted in that election? What spouse would not vote for their spouse?
He has a campaign plane, did he bother to lease his plane from Bombardier, the company he was swearing he would help if he's elected? Nope he is using an airbus manufactured in FRANCE??? Seriously he says one thing and then does the opposite of what he claims he wants to do? You do not say you're going to help a Canadian company and then order your campaign plane from a foreign country and surprise, surprise, it's from His Chosen country.
I seriously considered voting for Mulcair, I did vote for Layton but not a chance I will vote for Mulcair after months of research, he is NOT committed to Canada, he is only committed to gaining power and will stop at nothing to achieve that goal. Mark my words, he will take his cushy pension and fly off to France and put it into the French economy once he is done here.

ChyloeReece Its not even the matter of privacy or having something to hide, its the fact that its not bloody necessary. Why waste time and money on this? Canada has way bigger issues than terrorism. Terrorism isnt even a friggen problem here. I'm pretty convinced that Mulcair's the top choice right now. He breezed through these tough questions, much better than Trudeau and Harper.

The Liberals were in power when we went to Afghanistan. There are 62 countries involved in the fight with ISIS. To withdraw completely is the wrong move. I think we can stop our part in the air war but need to be involved with training local troops in the region. This is not a world were we can just ignore them and hope they go away nor should we expect other countries to do all the work. That has never been what Canada has done.

Anyways, the Muslim population in Canada has doubled under Harper's power and he also supports bringing in thousands of Syrians (middle eastern people are conservative as shit so why would left wing parties want them?). I don't know why you are trying to blame September 11 on the Canadian Liberal party when that was clearly Bush's fault (I don't even like the Liberal Party either i'm just saying). +Ava Casey I don't think there is much danger of him being Prime Minister after the election. So you should not have to move. But on the very slim chance he slid in a minority position he would not likely be in power long as I don't think Mulcair or Trudeau would vote with him at least it would be very surprising and disappointing if they did. I just hope they will work together as I think they will have to do.

I suspect that the Conservatives are going to lose, not because the Conservatives are terrible people, but because Stephen Harper overstayed his welcome. Justin Trudeau is a famous for being famous pretty boy that knows/understands very little. I'm going to vote for Mulcair, but Harper would be a second choice. Yes, Justin Trudeau is that bad.

During the SECOND Iraq war the U.N estimates that the lowest number of civilian casualties was 200,000 people. With a more realistic number set at 500,000 innocents killed. After the U.S "coalition of the willing" Ousted Saddam, most of the generals in his army were recruited by a new offshoot of al queda named I.S.I.S. The recruitment was made easy after them watching an entire generation of innocent civilians killed by U.S bombs. These are FACTS, deal with them as opposed to spinning them like a typical conservative to justify your racism and hatred of an entire people. You cannot just say FACTS are pointless, as they are facts, your argument is pointless. moron.

I'm not sure how I feel about giving land and money to non-Canadians (refugees), when we still owe too much to First Nations, and unemployed and underemployed Canadian citizens. What about young Canadians who are smothered by tuition dept? They could use land and/or money too. I have nothing against Middle-eastern people and refugees (Syrian, Iraqi, etc.), but they are not Canada's responsibility (they're arguably the USA's responsibility due to their economic and military interference). And helping 10k or even a million does not help the other billion or so. It doesn't help them overall. (By the way, I'll most likely still vote NDP. 10k isn't too economically devastating).
I was never a huge fan of Tom when he was in active politics. But credit is due to him for always trying to focus primarily on policy and not on flippant questions about personality. He was running for the political leadership of a country, not for homecoming king. The current P.M. didn't get the memo about that unfortunately.
I would like to give Mr. Mulcair a chance to prove himself. A few months ago I listened to a CBC radio interview with someone from an organization in Texas. This person was advocating Alberta to seperate from Canada and to join the USA. I am wondering if this advocate works for the Koch brothers. If the clarity act is 50 +1 then the Koch brothers can throw all their money behind the seperation of Alberta from Canada and have their own fiefdom.
I don't care about the refugees. I care about OUR Country. Let's work on getting OUR people jobs. Let's work on getting OUR people off the streets.

Tom Mulcair is an excellent speaker. It's odd to hear an NDP leader talk about balancing the budget and being proud of fiscal responsibility. ... but please keep talking this way. (y)
Peter Mansbridge is that dude. He cuts right through the bullshit and doesn't let people squirm out of an answer. You go Pete.
Roll back the "Tough On Crime" legislation that has been bitterly opposed by experts and humane people, too. Whether by itself or by coalition, roll back regressive injustice reforms. If the NDP doesn't fight for this, they aren't a worthy government.
In contrast to Trudeau's interview, throughout Mansbridge's Wed. night interview with Tom Mulcair; Mr. Mulcair came across sounding very Prime Ministerial. (much, much better than his poor, debate performance).
Unlike Justin, he didn't fidget about on the chair. He didn't hum and haw but gave, in most instances, precise answers in a firm voice. While Mulcair used a few platitudes, generally he gave decent responses to most questions.
When comparing Mulcair's speaking pace and body language to that of Trudeau, during Justin's interview with Mansbridge, it was Mulcair who sounded Prime Ministerial while Trudeau came across as a kid running for president of a high school student council. Possibly Justin was nervous since, unlike the first debate, he didn't have his sidekick, Elizabeth May, to tag-team in their attacks on Mulcair. Trudeau simply performed poorly in a one to one interview.
It became clear that Trudeau was not "coached" (unlike the debate) on several questions and his delaying tactics, while trying to think of a response, became very obvious with his "ums" and "uhhs" as he slowly concocted a feeble response to certain questions.
Justin provided the viewer with actual Liberal policies very rarely throughout the interview; instead relying on vague platitudes or simply skirting around the question.
I now worry, if Trudeau became P.M., he would get rattled if he had to confront Vladimir Putin or Angela Merkel on a one-to-one basis. I hate to quote a Conservative attack ad but I truly believe Justin is just not ready (he may never be) to be Prime Minister.
I was disappointed that Mansbridge didn't follow up on Trudeau's continual accusations that Mulcair would make cuts. Mansbridge should have asked, "Be specific Justin, what cuts is Mr. Mulcair going to make?"
Contrary to what Justin contends, I have not heard Mulcair make any cuts or renege on any promise he has made in this campaign.
Mulcair, based on the NDP's policies and his professionalism during such interviews as the one on one interview with Mansbridge (the debate was too "staged" by all participant and wasn't a true debate), has convinced me to give my vote to the NDP!

Did anyone else think he played to Mulcair a bit? He was different with him than with Harper and Trudeau. The wife thought so as well but has only seen Trudeau and Mulcair. I just wonder if anyone else noticed?
We can not be out of the fight. We need to do something...and I think that Trudeau had a much better solution with regards to Isis. He is spot on when you look at what we need to do which is SOMETHING. We cannot as a country sit by and do nothing. We should not be fighting against them but training them to fight themselves is the honourable thing to do

I was originally thinking Trudeau would be the best replacement for Harper but Mulcair is seems to be the better choice. He has real plan and u can tell from this interview. So where is this "Angry Tom" that his critics are always talking about? What I see here is a calm, principled leader who cares deeply about Canada.
If I could vote, I'd go for Mulciar, he has a clear opinion on everything, it doesn't look like he'll go back from his words, and he'll stop the fighting in Iraq. He seems to actually want to help Canadians above everything else

Reduce taxes for small and medium size business? Did Trudeau hint during his interview that some of these business may be large cap corporations incognito? A Corporation is considered a person to my understanding. How many small or medium size business is this person allowed to operate. Are we back to square one? By reducing their tax it will offset the cost of going incognito? I am thinking more details need to be disclosed as to how to weed out this problem.

The way I see it, Harper believes very strongly in one side and i don't really agree with him. Trudeau agrees strongly with another side and I partly agree with him.
Mulcair has a disingenuous manner where I don't see a strong passion any way or the other. It feels like his answers make it easy to amend his stance. This is just my instinct of watching them throughout debates etc.
Let me add that I don't have strong opinions about politics, I only just started to care enough to vote. So i don't pretend to be well rounded just decently informed. However this view is almost primal. I see two people with strong opposing views, and I see one who doesn't seem to have a strong view.

Hopefully another election debate coming soon. Mansbridge asked a few tough questions but seemed to move to the next question to quick. I would have liked to have seen them all grilled for an hour long interview opposed to just 20 minutes.

I like his charisma and his clarity of speech, but he's dodging quite a few questions. I'm not sure why though the questions he's dodging are worth dodging. Just say that if a 2008-like recession were to occur, you will do what the Harper government and what you wanted to do, that is to spend money to get the economy rolling again. Just say it. Just say that's if a referendum were to occur, use the 50.1% margin as the victory threshold. Just fucking say it.

Of all the "change" parties, I appreciate Mr Trudeau's passion and think he would be a better leader than Mr Mulcair. But I prefer Mr Mulcair's policies and concrete, specific plans. I wish Jack Layton were still around -- I'd have an easy decision of whom to vote for if that were the case.

I don't care about all the other issues. What is his stance on muslim immigration, radical islam and sharia law in Canada? Thats all I need to know this time around. The country is in danger of polarization and cultural change if the wrong person is elected. Harper has the right response to the migrant crisis so far. I wasn't going to vote for him. But now he has my vote.

I think Mulcair is the right choice for me. My only concern is that if he does raise taxes (assuming at a reasonable level) for large business, what is the likely impact? Will this be enough to make the big companies move out of the country? What do you think?
+Trevor Dixon Unlikely. They could afford a tax increase of a couple of percentage points without having to worry whether or not they will go out of business.

I was pretty unsure about these two until watching these interviews. I like Trudeau, and I do hope he stays on as Liberal leader regardless what happens in the election. But I just don't have any good sense for what he's actually going to do to change the fundamental problems facing our society today, at least as far as I'm concerned. Mulcair on the other hand, I can actually see a change in the right direction, and not just more cosmetic progress, but a change in this attitude that the rich create jobs through low taxes and the lower classes are just a bunch of freeloaders.
But if only May ran the NDP...

Even though I agree with Tom Mulcair 100% percent for change in Canada, pulling out Canadian troops from Iraq and Syria is giving in to the terrorists, what happened in Ottawa and that Quebec town last year should've been a wake up call. Instead Mulcair thinks we should abandon what were doing, what he should've said is written a letter to the UN and to see if he wants Canada to fight ISIS.

Replying 7 years late but now I’m a lot more educated on this topic than I would’ve been then. When he said that the biggest risk to Canada and Canadians is to be continued to involved in war, what he means is that when we bombed those cities, we actually caused people who would otherwise be on our side to take up arms as revenge for us killing their civilians by joining ISIS and joining the Taliban. The bombing mission just made everything worse.
If he wins and does't legalize weed imma be so pissed......

I believe Canadians do not understand conservative policy vs liberal policy. PLEASE for the love of god, PLEASE read each policy. If you are a low-middle wage earner, liberals will take from the rich and give to the poor + middle class (like robin hood). whereas conservative policies make it easier for the rich to get richer and the poor to get poorer (the gap between the rich and poor has gotten MUCH bigger since Harper's introduction to the House as Prime Minister. Mulcair is right in the middle with this one.

As a sociology graduate, I promise you that the BEST choice (not the perfect choice) for 90% of Canadians is the LIBERALS or the GREEN parties because of their leftist ideologies and policies.
