Chromium is the element causing the green color in the beryl, vanadium in emerald is of very specific origin and is uncommon.
Synthetic or not those gems are still beautiful. As long as it isn’t glass I don’t mind

Lab grown are indeed genuine. They're chemically identical. A lab emerald is real, it's just grown by humans instead of having a person slave over digging it out and waiting centuries for it to form... I'd rather get a VS, VVS, or flawless lab grown gemstone that's lab grown instead of an inferior color and clarity just because it's "natural". Such a gemstone in natural stone is available but it's going to be only for the extremely wealthy. Sellers should make it clear that stones are lab grown of course.

This seem serious at first glance, but it isn't. The plain fact is that, for a scientist and a gemmologist, a lab-created emerald is also a REAL emerald, just not a NATURAL one. In brief, a synthetic or lab-created emerald will have the same chemical, physical, and optical properties as a natural emerald. This charming lady is (willingly or not) misleading viewers, as synthetic emeralds are NOT to be confused with fakes, as she seems to imply here. The only true is that even if they are some of the most expensive synthetic gems, a lab-created emerald isn’t nearly as valuable as a natural emerald. Keep it in mind and check serious vids or rely on serious info from impartial and unbiased people, not from traders or merchants.
MOST jewelers seem to ignore the existence of science. It makes them look stupid, to be honest. They call the man made ones fake because they're scared of competition.
The difference between the natural and the synthetic is the "time". Otherwise you can mimic nature. Basically it boils down to emotionality. Holding one stone that was formed millions of years ago and the other few years or decades ago.

Last time I checked, synthetic still meant genuine. Natural means the gem was formed in the earth, synthetic simply means it was made using the exact same elements that are used to form the same natural gem in the earth. Sometimes, you can even take a tiny fracture of a large natural stone, ang grow it in a lab to your desired size. Jewelers try to argue that synthetic stones don't have any resale value - but I never plan on selling such a special piece of jewelry anyways lol.
Everything that isn't a diamond (a natural one that costs a ridiculous amount of money) is basically a threat to jewelers. If the gemstone isn't a natural diamond, ruby or sapphire (which are still very beautiful stones); the jeweler will try to tell you that it is just a waste of money if you try to put any other stone except those 3 in an engagement ring. Even though emeralds weigh 7.5-8 on the hardness scale, which is only one step below that of a ruby or sapphire.
In layman's terms, jewelers simply think that non-jewelers are stupid. Despite all the information available to us online.
@@cuteartsyguy I disagree, i am totally NOT a Jeweler or gemologist, just a regular customer/ joe and i totally love, prefer and will pay premiums for natural (earth mined) gems. Synthetic man made is just that synthetic and man made... When i go skiing in the winter I prefer (and can feel) the difference between man made snow ( which is technically snow) vs natural snow...this is not rocket science...There are many more examples of man made vs natural phenomenon
I wouldn't want to pay hefty $$$ for a lab grown rock, it literarily takes some raw materials, the right temperature and pressure to create it in a short span, unlike how the natural stones are formed
Diamonds, rubys, sapphire, an emerald, are the main stones. But not for me. The typical blue sapphire does nothing for me. An the other 3 are just as boring. There are so many other beautiful gemstones out there... Not just the boring 4.

I feel like the coloring on that first stone disqualifies it from being an emerald, it should be just beryl.
Gemstones in general are a waste of money. You take a ring or necklace and try and sell it most of the time you only get the value of the gold. The fact that you can buy lab created gemstones now for a fraction of the cost and your professional jeweler telling me you literally cannot tell the difference than me as a consumer has absolutely no reason to buy the wayyyy more expensive one

I take issue on the wording in this video. What the GIA calls "synthetic" is just what they decided to label lab-grown gems. These gems aren't fake, despite what the label implies or what salesman and marketing teams may tell you. The only functional difference is how they were made, because a flawless gem that formed naturally and a flawless gem that was lab made would be virtually identical in both chemical composition, hardness, and structure. The only reason more lab-made gems tend to be flawless is because they're formed under more controlled conditions.
An emerald is an emerald, regardless of how it was formed. Anyone who tells you differently is probably caught up in the apparatus ran by a handful of international mining corps that buy up most of the mining rights for natural gems and desperately want to maintain the market value of the thing they happen to hold an oligopoly over.
A "fake" gem is actually something like colored glass or even a less valuable gem that is made to look like the gem it's being sold as. THAT is fake.

Where I am from we hold value in natural gemstones. I consider a lab created emerald as an imitation, even though the chemical formula is the same.
Would you rather wear an emerald that the Earth created, millions of years in making or would you wear a synthetic stone that is made somewhere in a lab in a pressurized chamber.

Tell us you sell synthetic gemstones without telling us you sell synthetic stones. These stones are not created naturally by "Mother-earth", hot magma (lava) coming into contact with sedimentary rocks such as limestone or shale. Natural emeralds are quite rare because of the rather limited geologic environment in which they can occur. We are investing in the "rarity" of processes of natural wonders of our earth and not in a man-made "production" process of a laboratory.
I want to see a video on how to spot the difference between a gem and say green glass. You can make something just like that big light green stone, imperfections and all with glass.
Green glass is much weaker we found a jem stone digging on a job site and at first i look like a big pice of galss so we decided to seee if we nac brake it by throwing it from a height its stronger than glass but we currently needed some to look into the rock because its approximately 13 pounds
@@justinramdass9898 it's easier to look up the hardness rating for things and rub a corner of it against something slightly softer. This works because harder things will generally scratch softer things without being marked themselves.
This is also why it's really difficult to cut diamonds, and why low grade diamonds tend to be used as diamond dust to cut and facet other gems, or even to cut really hard metals in an industrial setting.
The best way to tell if a gem is real or just a piece of glass is to look at it with a magnifying glass or a microscope, if it has small air bubbles then it’s defenetly made out of glass.

"Indian emeralds" look like real emeralds, but are actually dyed quartz. The same with "Indian rubies" and "Indian sapphires". They are used in inexpensive costume and Sterling silver jewelry.
you can more often than not, see the concentration of the dye in the stones along the fractures and inclusions.
Good that the synthetic ones are cheaper, because they are also prettier.
Chics that utilize plastic surgery and synthetic enhancements are also prettier, but worthless in most other categories
Synthetic emerald doesn't mean it's not real, their compositions are chemically identical to that of a natural, mined stone, it's just that they were lab created, so technically, synthetic gems are real ,just not natural

Can you find emeralds in Colombia with a gold pan or a sifter? Or do they have to be hard rock mined out?

I think synthetic is being made here to imply "fake" when in reality it just means synthesized. I think the distinction should be made between fake, lab-grown genuine, and natural genuine. But alas profits and gatekeeping the market comes first am I right?! 😏 😉 👉🏻
Its fake in the sence it is not a geological crystal formed by the earth's lava, limestone and shale- forming in hydrothermal veins or in magmatic pegmatites. With beryllium, aluminum, silicon, and oxygen at the right temperature and pressure, this mineral can form, a process taking (arguably) up to 100,000 years. When you buy a natural emerald, you are buying the result of mother earth's work as opposed to some people in lab coats.

i think it's about time to accept that lab made stones are just like natural ones, but perfected, they have the same composition so they are real for all intents and purposes, the only difference between a lab emerald and a natural emerald is their origin, nothing else.
It should be stated where the stone comes from, i think we can all agree on that, but what you should't do is say a created stone with the same composition is a fake just to convince people to buy natural ones because you sell those more expensive, fake is a plastic stone or a colored crystal, not a perfect replica of the natural thing, i'm a jewelry student and when you see how things inside the industry work, you learn to buy your jewelry from third parties or independent artisans, never in a jewelry store/brand, never trust their prices and if you don't support the mining industry or want an specific stone but you're not willing to go with the stupid high prices, just buy a lab created one, only a professional with special equipment will be able to tell if it comes from a lab or from the earth
Nobody is arguing that synthetic gemstones aren't pretty, or that they aren't correct composition wise - I can build a kit lamborghini and put a powerful engine into it, I can buy a Rolex repro from the flea market and i can buy an off brand Coke soda and it'll probably taste pretty close to the real thing, But when it comes to AUTHENTICITY there's something to be said for having the peace of mind that what you have is not a knock off, however well it may be done.

Thanks for the explanations. Imho it is most difficult to identify that the variety is actually emerald. Even genuine stones might just be beryl but not real emeralds. Your first stone for example seems very light for an emerald. How can one identify if the color is the right one for an emerald?
I know a lot of gem collectors, 2 are emerald nuts.
They don’t consider that 52 carat stone to be an emerald.

I find it strange that people value the natural flawed stone more than the better looking lab made stone, to the point that one is labeled as "genuine" and the other as "fake".
It's a marketing thing, mostly. A small group of big international corporations own the mining rights to a relatively limited number of gem mines around the world. They see "Synthetic" gems as a threat to their market, so they do things like pushing a certain rating company to label lab-made gems as synthetic. Which is just a disingenuous way of trying to preserve the value of their market.
I mean, even before lab made diamonds. The value of diamonds should have went down. But it's a bit of an open secret now that a few corporations basically buy and vault metric fucktons of regular diamonds to keep diamond values from crashing. This is why clear or "white" diamonds are virtually impossible to sell for the price you get them at a store for, as the stores themselves have no interest in buying regular diamonds back. Their value is artificially inflated and they know it.

This same thing is happening with all collectibles from autographs to coins to diamonds. Everything can be made cheaper than the real thing and sometimes the fake is actually nicer than the real thing.
heyuha absolutely! We get it and yes sometimes the fake items do look just as good or better. Some people don’t mind it but others may want what nature has taken millions of years to create! For almost 500 years Colombia has produced emeralds for the noble jewels of kings, queens, emperors and empresses, not forgetting that for hundreds (if not thousands) of years before the arrival of the Spanish, the mines of the Muzo region were worked by the indigenous civilisations who revered the emerald in much the same way we do today. Of course, I am biased but as a consumer, I’d much rather own a piece of this rich history than buy a characterless synthetic stone. If you sell your stone to a pawn shop they will give you nothing. If you sell it on your own through a website or social media, you will definitely get most or more then your money back depending on your patience. Either way, we wholesale our stones and I have seen people sell synthetic emeralds for much more over my genuine emeralds. At the end of the day, it’s what makes you HAPPY ❤️

There are many types of synthetic emeralds...some look exactly like mined Colombian emeralds...but usually only the highest quality mined emeralds. (And good synthetic emeralds are expensive!) Sure, there are imitation emeralds, like cheap, obvious, green cubic-zirconium stones, beryl (not quite emerald), various kinds of simulated green stones, or Green Onyx-Claiming-to-be-Emerald, etc. But high quality synthetic emeralds are nothing like the aforementioned inferior substitutes. They are "genuine" gemstones, for sure. Just not "mined". For those of us who would not mortgage our homes in order to own a gemstone, lab-grown emeralds are a true joy. I own many pieces with synthetic emeralds and they are breathtaking. Even through a jeweler's loupe, one would have to be a highly trained expert to determine if they're high quality synthesized stones or $20,000 per carat mined emeralds, (of which I am certain I will never own.) I love and enjoy my synthetics for their own beauty. They even have that incredible inner-glow that makes emeralds seem magical.
That being said, I would love to own a ring with an exquisite, mined Colombian emerald someday! They are one of the most beautiful creations of earth.

You take a program at a reputable gemology institute or if your gemstone is enough vale you send it to GIA for analysis. It is often not that evident "visually". Be aware of the inclusions that look like bubbles and imperfections that follow a specific pattern- these are likely not natural Make sure that the stone's inclusions are very deep under the surface

The difference between a green beryl and emerald is the colour. Emerald is a variety of beryl. The difference is the tone and saturation of the stone. If the stone is too light in colour, it’s green beryl. If the stone is dark or its a very deep colour, then its an emerald.

I have a emerald from the curlew mine that is almost flawless as far as emeralds go. It’s only .65 carats, but it’s absolutely amazing!! And yes, I know it came from that mine 100% positive.
How do you know for sure unless you went into the mine and cut it out of the living rock yourself?

It's not FAKE. A synthetic Emerald is physically identical to an earth-mined emerald, like they are literally the same down to the atoms the only difference is how they are acquired.
Calling a synthetic emerald fake is like calling the light from a torch "fake light", it doesn't make any sense.

Actually bubbles is a way to tell if a gemstone is synthetic because natural gemstones shouldn't contain bubbles unless if it's a water pocket.
