  • A Toronto walk around the not yet open Science Centre Station at Eglinton and Don Mills. Then it's over to the recently closed Ontario Science Centre which was shuttered suddenly on Friday, June 21, 2024 by the provincial government.
The province has made it no secret that they want to close and (massively) downsize the Science Centre to a new location at Ontario Place.
    See savesciencecentre.com/ for more details.

What a terrible thing Ford decided to do. This was an iconic attraction loved by so many children and adults; from its modernist architecture to the great exhibits it had. I can’t believe it had to end that way when they could literally repair it.
When I was a bus driver at Eglinton division 10-20 years ago, I drove the Don Mills and Eglinton East buses respectively. I picked up and dropped off lots of school groups, families and children who were going to and from the Science Centre. Lots.

Apparently, the engineering report did not include closing down the Science Centre. That was Doug Ford's idea. You can bet money was involved . What has Ford got against human rights anyways? The Science Centre was built for the people. Unfortunately, Doug decided not to tell anyone. Just close it down without consulting the people of Toronto. Yesterday, Dougie went on You Tube to defend his decision, with the comments turned off. Nice. That is twice that Ford has given the people of Toronto the finger. There is a contractor who has offered to do the roof work for free. You think that will stop Dougie? When are Ontarians going to see Ford for what he is? An opportunist who got into politics to line his pockets and the pockets of his buddies with CASH. An opportunist who wanted to tear down the world's largest Green Belt, the Ontario Green Belt; a Greenbelt which are species needs for our very survival, and, yep, line his pockets and the pockets of his buddies with $$$$$$$$. Apparently the whole thing has been swept under a rug just like the Science Centre will. Have no fear though, Dougie is bringing BEER to the variety stores. Dougie believes that all Ontarians really need is BEER. Before you vote for Poilievre, think again. Look at Dougie and ask yourself an honest question; do you want Canada to be run like Ontario is being run right now?

Dougie boy made it clear he wants the new science centre at the Ontario Place. This closing is a shame, but isn't a big surprise. The building easily could've been renovated. There's plenty of buildings older than the science centre that are still standing tall. Instead he gets his wish. Much to the shagrin of Torontonians (and perhaps Ontarians as well).

Although I’m in the UK I tune into CP24 regularly, and those Ontario PC ads really annoy me. I find it funny how they can attack Bonnie Crombie (who I don’t know much about) and then paint Doug Ford as a caring, compassionate Premier. To me he’s a wolf in sheep’s clothing. The whole thing with the Science Centre stinks so much I can smell it from here. It’s very ironic how we know that he wants to move it to Ontario Place with his chum’s spa, and yet the reports contradict his and the PC’s claims of how “bad” it is.
And they don’t reconvene again until October 21st. It is just awful, corrupt, wrong, did I say corrupt?

The best part of your walk was when that young man recognized you & commented about the Science Centre, in particular, that it is educational, & have to agree. It is up to educational departments of schools & such to take an interest in showcasing the Science Centre. It would be a shame if it closed, as there are schools outside of Toronto which take their students to Toronto to visit & learn about places like the Science Centre. What would be the reason for this closure, maybe a councillor watches your videos & can answer that... Thanks again, Beautiful Johnny Strides, for a beautiful walk! When I first saw the bus route travelling from Pape North to Sheppard, the road and surrounding buildings seemed reminiscent of a developmental era in Canada during the 70’s-80’s. Buildings of architectural significance can be spotted along the route.

The local news reported that a risk of roof collapse on the building earlier this month. They decided to close down the whole centre on account of an engineer's report; thought it would be until the repairs are done (like for the summer) but hearing around how the government decided to shut it down indefinitely, not too surprising. They'd been discussing relocating the venue to another decades-long shutdown venue's location at Ontario Place by the Exhibition Grounds by the lake shore. While I would love to see Ontario Place's being revitalize again, it's something we'll be waiting a long time to happen, like the Eglinton Crosstown LTR (Line 5 of the TTC?) Too many projects in the city's works with not much getting finished, I'm thinking.

The long view answer; Ford does not care for facts, as they are often inconvenient and in contradiction to his chosen narrative. He finds the scientific method to discover truths problematic as it often runs counter to what snake oil he's trying to sell to a dumbed down electorate. So I'm told...

However, the theater there is terrible and needs to be replaced/renovated/updated.
Also, the bus going back and forth from front to back of building wastes an hour with the lines in both directions, so if you want to catch a movie in the middle of the tour it'll eat up a lot of time and you wont have as much time in the center itself.
