    I commented on a different video how practicing your techniques has very much improved my ball striking and scores. I'm 72 and retired, so I work one day a week as a volunteer at a golf course in exchange for free green fees and unlimited practice range privileges, so green fees and range balls aren't an issue for me. I play 3 to 4 times a week, but I practice every single day. About 5 weeks ago I began practicing what you preach, so to speak. A low 90's score for me was a good round with my old swing. It's a work in progress, some days my old swing starts to creep in, and I was off balance, especially with the driver. Balance issues are getting better and I've developed swing thoughts prior to each swing to help me stay on track. I'm now shooting in the low 80's and have broken 80 twice since switching over. Although I'm overjoyed with the success I've achieved thus far, I realize I'm not even "there" yet! I think Hogan said "the more I practice, the better I get". Headed out to the range and just wanted to Thank You again Tom!

    I have always been a flat, around the body backswinger and golf instructors for years have tried to get me to swing more upright with higher arms. It has never worked because my body and mentality favors a flat swing. What I love about Tom's vids and S & T is that it not only allows but requires a flat, rotational, around the body swing (as long as you tilt the left shoulder down and keep weight on the left side) which suits me fine. I've found ball striking to be immeasurably better and more consistent.

    • @SagutoGolf
      @SagutoGolf  ปีที่แล้ว

      How interesting and sad it is that with all the advances in equipment, technology, golf course grooming, etc. the average golfer still struggles to break 100. Epic failures within the realm of “conventional” instruction, perhaps??? So many misconstrued and/or misguided teachings - such as taking the club straight back, turning the shoulders level while independently lifting the arms, shifting into and torquing against a firm trail side, actively rolling the hands through impact, etc. - have relegated generations of golfers to the vast abyss of inconsistency and chronic frustration (and chronic back/knee/hip pain as well). Conversely, this powerful, low-maintenance, body-friendly swing system is rooted in physics, geometry, and human physiology, and it is modeled on empirical observations of the game's most prolific ball strikers. No surprise then that it stands the test of time and does not discriminate by age or ability - from kids to seniors and everyone in between, inclusive of the best players in the world today.
      Thanks so much for your support in sharing your success with it and keep up the great work!!
      (And by the way, it's not a "flat" swing since we have that built-in tilt as you mention; it's simply an inclined one-plane motion! 😎)

      @@SagutoGolf One more observation: in addition to being a flat swinger, I was also a hip slider/bumper. When I could time it right, from the "weight shifted to the right" position, I could hit it well and long--but it was difficult to time and often led to fats, pushes, hooks etc. As I understand it, Saguto/S & T golf permits and even calls for some slide or bump (whatever you want to call it) on the downswing (but not a hip spinout). So far I'm finding that when I remember to slide/bump forward as I come forward, I can crush it providing my head stays back (or centered over the ball). It's nice to find a swing that actually accoomodates my tendencies rather than fights them.

  • @benhowes88

    Hey Tom, picking up these tips has been so refreshing in the world of TH-cam vids I’ve been clicking through. It has yielded results very quickly with clean striking irons and great consistent distance.
    I had a question on how the “weight forward” works with the driver swing. We are notoriously taught to keep weight back in the driver swing and wanted to get your take. Apologies if you’ve done a video already and I’ve missed it.
    Thanks so much for the hard work and straight talking. You’ve got a new subscriber in me 😀

    • @SagutoGolf
      @SagutoGolf  ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I appreciate your kind words and your subscription, Ben, and I'm very glad to know that my instruction content is resonating well with you!!
      It is essentially the same swing with every club; just some minor setup differences and naturally occurring shaft plane changes as we graduate up in club length from short irons to woods. To demonstrate, you'll find towards the end of this episode some driving range footage of me hitting a 7 iron, 3 wood, and driver: th-cam.com/video/o0xscMyN3v8/w-d-xo.html Beyond that, if you search the word "drive" on this channel you'll see some related content.
      I am aware that many folks out there believe - and some even teach - that we must try to "hit up on the ball" with the driver. However, consider that in our stock setup with the driver the hands are even with the inside of the lead thigh (as they are with all clubs when playing a standard shot) and our ball position is even with the inside of the heel of the lead foot. This presets a very slight degree of forward shaft lean with the driver. Beyond that, the ball is behind the zero-point of the swing (which is even with the lead shoulder), meaning that without any contrived manipulations the club will still be on its descent - albeit very close to flat - at impact.
      So, perhaps with the exception of folks with slower swing speeds - or those Long Drive participants teeing it extra high and hitting maybe 1-2 balls out of 10 onto a 60-yard wide "fairway" - in general the path is still ever so slightly down. In fact, the PGA Tour average with the driver is actually minus (e.g.: downward) 1.5 degrees - nearly level - and it should feel level - but slightly down nonetheless. (Here is an article on Ping’s website addressing this topic - ping.com/en-us/blogs/proving-grounds/optimal-launch-and-spin#:~:text=According%20to%20Trackman%2C%20PGA%20Tour,85%25%20ball%2Dflight%20laws )
      For these reasons I do not advocate trying to hit up on the ball, and efforts to do so due to erroneous advice has caused many an amateur significant issues with their driver. However, as I routinely say, let your ball striking quality and shot shape consistency be your guide.
      Upon learning this swing properly you will be harnessing the tremendous power source known as "angular momentum". This is the reason my students and online school members of all age ranges end up bombing it farther than they ever had previously, and I'm happy to let their unsolicited testimonials tell the story: saguto.golf/p/sagutogolfreviews. First saw you on Eric Corgono's site. Obviously another gimick way to play golf,I thought. Finally in my desperation to get rid of my slice, I decided to try Stack &Tilt. Almost instantly my slice was gone and I gained significant yardage! I no longer worry about hitting the ball. I know if my setup is right my hit will fly true.
    I wished I learned this technique before I wasted hundred of dollars on a PGA coach who taught the traditional weight shift from back foot to front!
    What great a sense of freedom and confidence I now possess .

      This body-friendly, powerful, consistent, low-maintenance Stack and Tilt swing system is designed to provide a lifetime of great ball striking, and since it is rooted in physics, geometry, and human physiology it does not discriminate by age or ability - from kids to seniors and everything in between, and inclusive of the best players in the world. I give all credit where it is due - including Andy Plummer and Mike Bennett for analyzing and interpreting the science, and to those who preceded them with their empirical observations of the game's best ball strikers and all their subsequent chalkboard number-crunching . I just do my best to take what they have built and convey it in my own simplified teaching style (which is fully on display in the comprehensive, structured, sequential learning platform of my online school).

    Been playing golf for 4 months now and I just wanted to share that yesterday after being around 90-93 score (for the better part of 2 months) I hit a pb of 84(very forgiving course & had a lot of time off from work so probably play 8months worth in 4😂)Then I went back again today and hit an 83. Yesterday it all just made sense and I was striking the ball sooooo pure and gain 10-15 yards on all my clubs(ngl I sailed the first couple greens bcuz my clubs were going farther) All the feels that soguto and Adam porzack talks about made sense. My driver was and is still getting me into “situations” but it’s just so much fun to strike the ball , literally addicting. The cool thing is I’m 4 strokes away from breaking 80 (@ that course)

    • @SagutoGolf
      @SagutoGolf  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Actually, Bob, I recently released an episode in which I referenced that exact Costanza "opposite" theme!! 😆
      Building a reliable, repeatable swing certainly takes time, commitment, and proper, purposeful practice. The beauty of this swing system, though, is that once we have it ingrained it becomes very low-maintenance because it does not rely on precise timing or micromanagement of movements.
      Thanks,
      Tom

      The way I see it, we can either simply put the already existing natural laws to work and thereby build a powerful, body-friendly, repeatable, low-maintenance motion, or we can twist, morph, torque, contrive, and otherwise mess with the principles of physics and geometry in an effort to better suit some ill-conceived whims, all the while recognizing that at the point of impact those pre-existing laws are going to be the only things that matter to the ball.

      This is a very body-friendly motion as supported by the fact that a significant percentage of my online school members are in their 60's, 70's, and 80's - i.e.: a smorgasbord of chronic ailments, physical limitations, back/shoulder/knee/hip pain, arthritis, and joint replacements - and they are overwhelmingly elated to experience the dramatic pain-free game improvement, seemingly effortless power, and resulting enjoyment that this swing affords them. It all begins with a proper setup which provides for a free-flowing motion. Upon that good foundation a repeatable swing which produces consistently crispy impact can be built.
      Have you looked into the comprehensive, structured, sequential learning platform of the online school yet? That's where - among many other courses and lessons covering various aspects of the game - you will find very detailed instruction and drills that take you through the entire swing step-by-step from setup to finish. You don't need the flexibility of a Romanian gymnast - or even of this far less pliable golf instructor - to execute this swing, experience great ball striking, and reclaim - or even exceed - yardages from years past. I hope you'll give the school some thought.

      Welcome to this greatest of games!! I sincerely appreciate your kind words, and I'm very glad to know that my instruction content and teaching style are resonating with you!!
      I was using JumboMax Ultralite grips in extra-large for much of 2022 and the first part of 2023. I had wanted to give them a try for a few reasons, including the fact that DeChambeau uses them and we share similar swing philosophies. I personally love the feel as well as how they help to keep my hands quiet through the zone.
      Now, having said that, I recently purchased a new set of PXG's, and since they don't carry the Jumbo's in-house I went with their largest available grip, which is a midsize. I absolutely love the clubs, and I'm putting the factory grips through the playing test before deciding whether or not to have them regripped. There are no issues with the Jumbos and I still really like the way they feel; that's just where I'm at presently.
      The Jumbos are not necessarily for everyone - and my fingers are a bit longer than average - so I routinely tell folks to "try before you buy." However, having a properly sized grip that feels both comfortable and secure is critically important as it is our only connection to the object that is going to deliver us blissful joy or deep anguish, yet it is perhaps also the most overlooked equipment fitting component in golf.
      Thanks again for your kind words and have fun out there!!

      I'm glad to know that this lesson performed well for you, Joseph!
      I’m using JumboMax Ultralite grips in extra-large. I wanted to give them a try for a few reasons, including the fact that DeChambeau uses them and we share similar swing philosophies. These grips keep my hands much quieter - which I personally prefer. Also, since my fingers don't wrap all the way around and dig into my palms, I'm not triggering any forearm tension or activating arms muscles that may otherwise have a tendency to take control of the swing.
      My existing Titleist irons are 1-degree flat. I just got fitted for a new set of irons and they are going to be standard. There are different variables involved including the type of shaft.

    Love your lessons always inspiring. Now i listen and go practice and it’s always helpful, however i employ a young man who has a 0 handicap who made the most relevant and swing changing remark to my ever keen ears. He said it’s most important to hit off your heels or make sure your heels are grounded. This little sentence has changed my striking results completely. So I would love a lesson regarding this bit of advice Sir.

    • @SagutoGolf

      Keeping the weight forward is actually working because it really does work, Hector!! 😎
I was teaching a neighbor the golf swing and told her that once you were set up correctly, you could probably close your eyes and make a swing and the ball would just get in the way. She said, "OK, do it." So I set up, closed my eyes and pured an 8 iron right down the middle of the range. She was amazed and so was I.

    Yes. Golf is a philosophy of life. And, life is a whole lot easier if we live our lives under the radar. And, the simple fact is that we need to swing behind ourselves. When we swing up, the weight of the swing puts strain on the back. But, it is very difficult to swing behind yourself. But, one handed swing drills have helped me helped me to do this.

    • @SagutoGolf
      @SagutoGolf  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi Wayne,
      The result of a correctly executed swing should generate what seems to be an absurdly fantastic return on investment, the ball rocketing towards the target with the application of seemingly minimal - if any - effort. That's the beauty of the physics and geometry embedded in this swing system, which when properly combined unleash the tremendous force known as :"angular momentum". While it is normal at first to micromanage positions and movements to build in the "feels" and ingrain them, once we are able to confidently entrust the motion to the big muscles fabulous things happen.
      Conversely, diminishing returns are realized when we try to swing harder, because in doing so we are likely activating the hands and arms and thereby impeding the awesome power of the shoulders and hips. The big muscles give us superhero power and wonderfully predictable consistency; contrived manipulations of the small muscles amount to golf swing Kryptonite.

    • @SagutoGolf
      @SagutoGolf  ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks Rico - I'm glad you're enjoying my content!!
      While this system affords you some leeway, in general once my students and members show some level of proficiency with the swing I suggest that they migrate to a stock ball position that is in the middle of the stance for short irons, two balls inside the lead heel for middle irons, and creeping more forward for the longer clubs - the farthest forward being even with the inside of the lead heel for the driver (with the stance width increasing as we move from shorter to longer clubs). From there they can make incremental tweaks to see how different positions affect impact quality and shot shape. For example, my personal preference for the shorter clubs tends to be a position that is slightly forward of prescribed.

      @@SagutoGolf Thank you for the detailed response. Initially, I started with the mid sized grip on driver. At first I got stuck pushing tee shots. I felt like it was double the size of the standard grip, which, obviously it was not. After a few rounds of golf and work at the range, I found that my dispersion was better, but my distance was not affected. So then I got the grip for the five iron and the three metal and then my 52° wedge. So far so good. Playing a few rounds of golf with different grip sizing is very ill advised. Four clubs in the bag at midsize grip and the rest at standard was an interesting experiment but that is over with thank God But now that I feel comfortable with the midsize to grip, I will convert all of the clubs to midsize.

      I'm glad to learn of your improvement, Matthew!
      The answer to those overcooked draws lies in ball flight laws. Clubface angle relative to target line is the primary influencer of the ball's starting line, and face relative to path determines direction and degree of curvature. From there we can then back into the cause of a sideways shot and then reverse engineer it. Oftentimes the cause of your shot shape is a path that is too much in-to-out, too strong of a grip, or some combination thereof, though that's just a guess without actually seeing your swing.

    Hey Tom, love the videos. Could you make a video talking about grip size and how it can effect the club face? My instructor and others have been telling me the jumbo max grip is causing me to keep the club face open on driver. I just ordered a new driver with a jumbo but not jumbo max to help close it better. I found when testing a standard grip had me closing it too much. Any thoughts?

    • @SagutoGolf
      @SagutoGolf  ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Hi Brian,
      It is unlikely that I will do a YT video on the topic, but I'll share a few thoughts. I wanted to give the JumboMax grips a try for a few reasons, including the fact that DeChambeau uses them and we share similar swing philosophies. From my perspective I love the feel as well as how they help to keep my somewhat overactive hands quiet through the zone. Beyond that - and as they relate to grip pressure - the Jumbos are large enough that my fingertips don't wrap all the way around and press into my hands, which is a definite trigger of forearm tension for me in smaller grips.
      Having properly-sized grips that feel comfortable and secure is critically important as they are our only connection to the object that is going to deliver us blissful joy or deep anguish, yet it is perhaps also the most overlooked equipment fitting component in golf.

      Precisely, William! The way I see it, we can either simply put the already existing natural laws to work and thereby build a powerful, body-friendly, repeatable, low-maintenance motion, or we can twist, morph, torque, contrive, and otherwise mess with the principles of physics and geometry in an effort to better suit some ill-conceived whims, all the while recognizing that at the point of impact those pre-existing laws are going to be the only things that matter to the ball!
      Thanks - I'm glad you enjoyed the lesson!

    • @SagutoGolf
      @SagutoGolf  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      While this system affords you some leeway, Dan, in general once my students and members show some level of proficiency with the swing I suggest that they migrate to a stock ball position that is in the middle of the stance for short irons, two balls inside the lead heel for middle irons, and creeping more forward for the longer clubs - the farthest forward being even with the inside of the lead heel for the driver (with the stance width increasing as we move from shorter to longer clubs). From there they can make incremental tweaks to see how different positions affect impact quality and shot shape. For example, my personal preference for the shorter clubs tends to be a position that is slightly forward of prescribed.

    • @SagutoGolf
      @SagutoGolf  ปีที่แล้ว

      I thought I replied to you yesterday about that, but given the sheer volume of comments and responses it could have been someone else. Anyway, the net is a DIY job. It is approximately 7’ tall and 8’ wide. We used this video as a starting point - th-cam.com/video/-p11qs4E2T0/w-d-xo.html - and then made some other minor PVC support structure modifications to suit our needs. We did not use PVC cement as this allows us to easily disassemble it if necessary. The netting we used is 10' x 10' golf cage impact net purchased from Amazon, and it differs from the screening material in the video. (By the way, if using a net like we did you probably won’t need the screw hooks that are mentioned in the video - bungees should suffice.)

    • @SagutoGolf
      @SagutoGolf  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Actually, Jason, keeping the weight moving forward with the lower body in the downswing while the upper torso - and thus our swing center - remain in place preserves an appropriately shallowed path.
